Body found in Bloomington pond
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Department had to call in a dive team for a reported vehicle in a pond on the Northside of Bloomington over the weekend. On Sunday afternoon the vehicle was pulled out of the water off of State Road 45 behind the Super 8 hotel. The remains of an unidentified body was found inside. The matter is under investigation and no other information is currently available.

NERx Biosciences receives $2M to help with cancer fighting treatment
NERx Biosciences, a pre-clinical stage biotechnology company based out of Indianapolis, was awarded a $2 million grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Cancer Institute to further develop small molecule inhibitors that target the DNA Damage Response pathway for difficult-to-treat cancers, such as lung and ovarian cancer. Cisplatin, the most prescribed cancer therapeutic, is known to cause DNA damage. Despite wide use, most cancer patients are not cured with Cisplatin alone, and NERx Biosciences will work to enhance Cisplatin activity.

Martinsville seeks new Parks Superintendent
The City of Martinsville is accepting applications for the full-time position of park superintendent. The park superintendent for the City of Martinsville is responsible for overseeing all public parks. Responsible for planning and managing the activities of the parks department; including recreational, seasonal aquatics operations, youth and adult athletics/activities, special events and other activities related to recreation and maintenance. Work is performed under the supervision of the Park Board and the Mayor. You can apply on the City of Martinsville Website.

City of Bloomington seeks input in the identification of Housing Priorities
The work will impact Bloomington’s Community Development Block Grant and Home Investment Partnering funds, which they receive from the federal government to address key community initiatives. These resources finance affordable housing and community development activities for low- and moderate-income residents in Bloomington. Public Meetings will be Tuesday August 20th 6-7 pm at the Broadview Learning Center, Wednesday, Aug. 21, from noon to 1pm at the Downtown Monroe County Public Library, and Tuesday, Sept. 3, 6-7 p.m.at Tri-North Middle School

IU students move back to town
One more week before Indiana University’s 2024 move in weekend. Starting this Sunday, August 18th through Tuesday the 20th incoming IU freshmen will be moving into their dorms. International students will begin moving in tomorrow. Classes for the university start on Monday, August 26th

1810 – William Henry Harrison met with Shawnee Chief Tecumseh at the governor’s home in Vincennes. Tecumseh expressed his disapproval of a recent treaty, which gave the U.S. a large tract of Native American land in Central Indiana.
