Southern Indiana Bobcats fall in the Mid Central Football League Class 2A Championship Game
The Southern Indiana Bobcats Semipro Football Team lost to the Kentucky Pirates 34-21 in the Mid Central Football League Class 2A Championship Game Saturday Afternoon at Mount Vernon High School in Fortville, Indiana. The Bobcats finish their second season with a 11-4 record after 3-8 record in 2023 with a combined 14-12 record in the organizations two seasons.  The Bobcats ownership announced on Social Media Sunday Morning that it was ceasing operations effective immediately and thanked all the players, coaches, staff and fans for all their support the last two seasons.

The Pirates scored on two touchdown passes, a touchdown run, a pick six and fumble recovery for a touchdown. Floyd Johnson scored on a touchdown run for the Bobcats late in the first quarter and Dre Atkins added the extra point to give the Bobcats their only lead of the game 7-6. The Pirates led 18-13 at halftime. Kyrie Allen picked up a fumble recovery for a touchdown to start the third quarter as the Bobcats trailed 18-13. The Pirates led 26-13 at the end of the third quarter as the Bobcats got within five points 26-21 as Marquise Holt scored a rushing touchdown to start the fourth quarter. Bobcats Quarterback Floyd Johnson took a hard hit as the ball popped loose and the Pirates ran it back for a touchdown to seal the game lift the MCFL Championship Trophy.

Indiana Fever drop Road Game at the Minnesota Lynx Saturday Night
The Indiana Fever (13-16) fell, 90-80, to the Minnesota Lynx at Target Center on Saturday night. Indiana and Minnesota will meet for the final time during the regular season on Friday, September 6 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Fever guards Caitlin Clark and Kelsey Mitchell led Indiana in scoring on Saturday night as they both recorded their third-consecutive games scoring at least 20 points. Clark recorded 23 points, eight assists and five rebounds in the loss, marking her 11th game of the season recording at least 20 points, five rebounds and five assists. Clark joined Aliyah Boston and Tamika Catchings as the only players in franchise history to score at least 500 points in a rookie season. Mitchell followed with 21 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals, marking her 10th game this season scoring at least 20 points.  Fever center Aliyah Boston recorded her 10th double-double of the season as she pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds and 10 points. Saturday was also Boston’s 11th game this season grabbing 10 or more rebounds. Off the bench, all Fever reserves who appeared in the game, led by guard Lexie Hull with 10 points and two rebounds. Forward Damiris Dantas followed with eight points, four rebounds and two assists. Former Indiana University Standout Grace Berger did not play.

Despite a slower start for Indiana in the first quarter, the Fever shot 9-of-9 to open up the second quarter and went on a 21-9 run for more than six minutes as halftime approached. Indiana outscored Minnesota, 28-16 and cut a 13-point deficit down to one, 45-44, to end the second quarter. Indiana outscored Minnesota in paint points, 44-30, bench points, 24-14, and outrebounded the Lynx, 40-27, to end the game. Saturday was Indiana’s fourth-consecutive game outrebounding its opponents.  Minnesota (22-8) was led by forward Napheesa Collier’s season-high 31-point performance to clinch a playoff spot and win its sixth consecutive game. Collier shot 12-of-18 from the field and added five rebounds, too. Four other Lynx players scored in double figures as well, as guard Kayla McBride and forward Bridget Carleton followed Collier with 19 points and 16 points, respectively. McBride and Carleton combined for eight assists and seven rebounds. Lynx guard Courtney Williams and reserve guard Natisha Hiedeman both scored 10 points each. The Fever head to Atlanta to take on the Dream tonight at 7:30 pm and the game will be broadcast on WTHR Channel 13.

Bloomington South and Edgewood Win while Bloomington North loses a tight one in Week 1
The First Friday Night of the High School Football Regular Season saw the Monroe County Schools go 2-1 with all three teams on the road as Bloomington South Beat Columbus East 27-6, Edgewood handled Mitchell 41-6 and Bloomington North lost a close one at Mooresville 30-27. Edgewood will host Washington while Bloomington South travels to Martinsville and Bloomington North travels to Bedford North Lawrence for Week 2. Indiana University Commit Bryce Taylor kicked a 20-and 53-yard field goal. Duncan Combs threw two touchdown passes one to Sam Giles for 27 yards and Thomas Gill for 5 yards. Braylen Townsend had a 5 yards touchdown run as Bloomington South led 13-6 at halftime.  This is the fourth year in a row that Bloomington South has won the season opener and the fifth in the last sixth years. Columbus East has not won a season opener since 2019 and the second year in a row they have lost to Bloomington South to start the season. Martinsville won at Bedford North Lawrence 50-7 and are the Panthers opponent for week 2. Edgewood likes the number 41 when it comes to playing Mitchell as the Mustangs beat Mitchell 41-27 a season ago and scored the same number of points on the Bluejackets this time. Its third straight season Edgewood has beaten Mitchell to start the regular season. Edgewood led 27-0 at halftime and then opened the second half with a Nehemiah Stunk kick return for a touchdown to make it 34-0 Mustangs at the 11:42 left in the Third Quarter. Stunk had a scoop and score midway through the fourth quarter to make it 41-0 before the Bluejackets got on the board.    It’s the most points for the Mustangs since the final game of the 2023 season when the Mustangs beat Brown County 46-6. Edgewood will host Washington on the Red Carpet in Ellettsville as the Hatchets beat North Daviess 49-28 in Washington.

The start to the Anthony Lindsey Era did not go as planned for Bloomington North falling to a Mooresville Team by three points. The Cougar Defense came up big early on as Zeke Trueblood got an interception and Joe Luther kicked a 38-yard field goal to make 3-0 with 10:35 left in the first quarter. Mooresville took the lead with Tyler Denny taking the direct snap and going in from 10 yards out to make it 6-3 with 8:29 left in the first quarter. With Noah Ferree fumbling at its own 48 yards line Mooresville capitalized with 38-yard touchdown pass from Connor Cruz to Kaden Bruhn to make It 13-3 with 4:29 left a busy first quarter. The Pioneers added a 2-yard touchdown run from Trey Bennett to make it 20-3 at 1:27 mark in the first quarter. Joe Luther opened the second quarter with his second field goal of the game from 29 yards out to make it 20-6 with 10:59 left. Noah Ferree scored from 2 yards out to make it 20-13 with 5:40 to go before halftime as the teams went to locker room with that scoreline. Matt Coffey kicked a 27-yard field goal to make it 23-13 Pioneers for the only score of the third quarter. Noah Ferree scored his second touchdown of the game to start the fourth quarter to make it 23-20 this time from the 12-yard line. Trey Bennett punched it in to give Mooresville a 30-20 lead with 4:48 left in the game. Ferree kept the Cougars in the game with a 4-yard touchdown run with 2:20 left t0 make it 30-27 and his third rushing touchdown of the night. Bloomington North got the ball back with 20 seconds left as the Cougars had one last chance and Dash King was picked off down field by Kaden Bruhn. Bloomington North will remain on the road as Coach Linsdey looks for his first win against Bedford North Lawrence who lost at home 50-7 to Martinsville.

Cream Sweeps Crimson in the Indiana University Volleyball Scrimmage at Wilkinson Hall
Fans returned to Wilkinson Hall on Friday evening as the Indiana Volleyball team held its annual Cream and Crimson scrimmage. A packed student section enjoyed three sets of energetic volleyball with the Cream side, led by senior setter Camryn Haworth, sweeping the Crimson crew (25-22, 25-22, 15-11). Head coaches of the cream team, Rachel Morris and Carly Skjodt, earned bragging parts over their counterparts Kevin Hodge and Matt Kearns. Junior outside hitter Candela Alonso-Corcelles enjoyed a match high 15 kills. Haworth supplied 24 assists and eight digs for the winning side. On the opposite side, senior outside hitter Mady Saris led the way with nine kills and 10 digs. Freshman right side Avery Daum made a nice debut with six kills and three blocks. Sophomore libero Ramsey Gary dug nine balls and was perfect in serve receive on 15 attempts. The real thing begins this week as IU heads south to face Kennesaw State in the season opener on Friday. The home opener, and first of 15 home matches, will be on Labor Day (7:00 PM) with UC-Davis visiting Wilkinson Hall for the first time in program history.

The Hoosiers return five regular rotation players from last season including setter Camryn Haworth, libero Ramsey Gary and kills leader Candela Alonso-Corcelles. Additionally, opposite hitter Avry Tatum and outside hitters Mady Saris and Morgan Geddes provide much experience on the pins. IU will work in a new duo at middle blocker this season. Talented offensive threat and freshman Ella Boersema will see the court early. Junior Madi Sell, a transfer from Missouri, will be a big blocking presence and will continue to improve over the course of the season. With the return of a plethora of talented servers, IU will continue to be an aggressive team from the end line. The Hoosiers have had 200+ aces in each of the past two seasons. Haworth led the NCAA and Big Ten with 73 service aces last season and is on pace to break the program’s all-time mark of 197.

Indiana University Men’s Soccer drops Season Opener at Saint Louis
Indiana Men’s Soccer (0-1-0) fell in its 2024 season opener Friday night against Saint Louis (1-0-0) at Hermann Stadium by a 2-0 result. Billiken goals early in each half gave the hosts the upper hand. The Hoosiers surged with a flurry of chances in the final 10 minutes including a penalty opportunity but couldn’t find the breakthrough. In the 16th Minute the Hoosiers were beat wide, pulling senior goalkeeper JT Harms away from goal. The Billikens capitalized with a pass across goal that was put away after a jumble in the box. In the 43rd Minute Harms recorded a pair of saves to limit the damage going into the half, making a fingertip save before stopping a header from the resulting corner. In the 60th Minute disaster struck, and St. Louis doubled its lead from a corner kick, which deflected off senior defender Jansen Miller and into the Hoosier goal. In the 82nd Minute Indiana earned a penalty late in the match, but graduate transfer Justin Weiss’ attempt was pushed away as SLU senior goalkeeper Jeremi Abonnel dove to his right and in the 85th Minute Senior forward Samuel Sarver blasted a 23-yard free-kick on goal, but Abonnel leaped and sent it over the bar.

Six Hoosiers made their Indiana debuts Friday night: Graduate transfers Luke Jeffus and Justin Weiss, junior Quinton Elliot and freshmen Charlie Heuer, Jack Lindimore and Michael Nesci. Weiss, Elliot and Lindimore all featured in the Starting XI.  IU has started each of its last three seasons without a win in its opening match. In the previous two, the Hoosiers finished in the NCAA College Cup and Elite Eight respectively. Indiana will look to turn the page in its home opener on Thursday when it faces Hoosier State foe Notre Dame in a rematch of the 2023 NCAA Tournament Elite Eight. The match is slated to kick off at 8 p.m. on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium.

Indianapolis Colts beat the Cincinnati Bengals in the Preseason Finale
The Colts beat the Bengals 27-14 in the preseason finale on Thursday night at Paycor Stadium in Cincinnati. Colts starting quarterback Anthony Richardson played into the second quarter. There was good and bad from last year’s fourth overall pick. He led a 12-play, 80-yard drive capped off by a nine-yard touchdown to rookie Adonai Mitchell, but he also threw an interception returned for a touchdown to Jordan Battle. Richardson was sacked and fumbled on his final series of the night. He finished 8-of-14 for 86 yards, a touchdown and an interception. The team’s top draft pick this season, Laiatu Latu, showed his potential to wreak havoc in the passing game early on by sacking Bengals quarterback Logan Woodside. The Colts took control of the game in the second half behind two Spencer Shrader field goals and a Jason Bean one-yard rushing touchdown. Running back Demetric Felton sealed the game with a 40-yard touchdown run with 1:41 to play in the game. The Colts open the regular season against division rival, Houston at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sept. 8.
