Local News Headlines: September 4, 2024

The proposed Monroe County Development Ordinance will be reviewed and discussed at the Monroe Convention Center on Thursday September the 12th from 1-3pm, in advance of the county’s public hearing later in the month. The meeting is co-sponsored by the Building Association, the Board of Realtors, Habitat for Humanity, and both the Bloomington and Ellettsville Chambers of Commerce. On the Agenda for this evening’s Bloomington City Council Meeting, A Letter of Support for the Community Foundation Leadership Grant Project, a report from Doug Bruce on the current status of the Convention Center Expansion Project, Funding adjustments for Public Works, and a discussion of the Mayor’s 2025 Budget Proposal.

 Mother Hubbard ‘s Cupboard has announced the recipient of their 2024 Libby Yarnelle Award. This year, the annual recognition went to Liz Barnhart, a community member whose time at the Hub began a decade ago. She has been a garden intern, a pantry volunteer, an educator, a volunteer coordinator, and now the organization’s outreach coordinator.

Bloomington Mayor Kerry Thomson will host a Traveling Town Hall session on Tuesday, Sept. 9th at Binford Elementary. The event begins at 6 p.m. with a brief update from Mayor Thomson on recent city projects and initiatives. Following the update, Mayor Thomson and Councilmember Rollo will review and respond to submitted questions.

A ceremony was held yesterday in Indianapolis to honor former US Senator from Indiana, Richard Lugar. A statue of Luger was unveiled at Bicentennial Plaza, which will ultimately stand Indy’s Lugar Plaza. Former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice delivered the keynote address at the event.
