Indiana University Volleyball survives Ball State with a five-set battle to finish the Indiana Invitational 3-0
Junior opposite hitter Avry Tatum had a match for the ages on Saturday at Wilkinson Hall, taking over in the final two sets to help the Indiana Volleyball team (6-2, 0-0) to a five-set win over Ball State (25-18, 25-22, 20-25, 25-27, 15-13). The Hoosiers capped off a perfect 3-0 weekend in their home invitational. Tatum, a native of Solana Beach, Calif., produced a career-high 25 kills. She was efficient in her endeavors, hitting at a .436 clip across the five sets. Her previous career best came while she was at Cincinnati in 2022, terminating 22 kills in a match at Temple. Tatum was the only IU player with double-digit kills. While the offense struggled at points in the match, Tatum picked up the slack. She delivered 14 of her 25 kills in the final two games including nine in set four. She had five kills in set five as senior setter Camryn Haworth continued to find her in transition. Tatum’s 25 kills are the most by an IU player since Breana Edwards totaled 27 in a win over Rutgers in 2021. The Hoosiers had 11 blocks as a team with junior middle blocker Madi Sell and senior outside hitter Mady Saris each playing a part in four. Sophomore libero Ramsey Gary led the way defensively with 21 digs. IU was aced just once in the match while tacking up nine aces from the end line. For her performance, Tatum was named the Indiana Invitational Tournament MVP. Saris was also selected to the All-Tournament team with 32 kills across three matches. The Hoosiers improve to 6-2 for the first time since the 2019 season. A week off will help IU before returning to action next Friday at Notre Dame.
Outstanding passing and great distribution were the key for the Indiana Volleyball team (5-2, 0-0) as it took care of Southern Indiana in straight sets (25-19, 28-26, 25-19) on Friday evening at Wilkinson Hall. The Hoosiers, who beat Chicago State earlier in the day, finished off a 2-0 start to the Indiana Invitational. Senior setter Camryn Haworth set a balanced attack in the win, dishing out 38 assists to five different players. All five of IU’s primary attackers had at least five kills, led by a match-high 14 from junior outside hitter Candela Alonso-Corcelles. On her birthday, freshman middle blocker Ella Boersema had a career-high nine kills. The Hoosiers continue to struggle from the service line, a trend that’s continued into week three. Despite a season-high 16 service errors, IU put Southern Indiana under pressure in the final two sets. The visitors had 19 attacking errors, 13 of those unforced. Boersema had a hand in all six blocks for the Hoosiers. In the two victories Friday, senior outside hitter Mady Saris continued her hot start to the season. The Canadian attacker hit over .400 in both games, combining for 23 kills in a pair of wins. Junior opposite Avry Tatum handled less of a load offensively but is hitting .374 on the season after combining for 16 kills in two matches Friday.
A slow start, which featured eight service errors in a first-set loss, was corrected by the Indiana Volleyball team (4-2, 0-0) as it stormed back to win the final three sets in full control. The Hoosiers’ block and quick offense took over to win Friday’s opening match against Chicago State in four games (21-25, 25-19, 25-11, 25-15). IU was paced offensively by strong play from senior outside Mady Saris. She had a team-high 14 kills, putting the ball away at an efficient .407 (14-3-27) clip. Both middle blockers, Sell and freshman Ella Boersema, helped on six blocks. Chicago State hit .308 in the opening game but was rendered ineffective the rest of the way on pressure created by IU. The Cougars committed 25 attacking errors, 12 self-induced, hitting just .120 across the full match. A dominant third set saw the visitors hit -.179 (4-9-28). IU hit above .300 in three of four games including a dominant .545 hitting percentage in the final set.
Indiana University Men’s Soccer wins Big Ten Opener at Rutgers
Indiana Men’s Soccer saw its patience rewarded Friday night on Yurcak Field as senior forward Tommy Mihalic’s 87th-minute strike made the difference in its 1-0 win over Rutgers in the opening match of Big Ten Conference play. IU (2-2-2, 1-0-0 B1G) outshot the Scarlet Knights (3-4-0, 0-1-0) 13-7 but had to wait until the dying moments for its breakthrough. The Hoosiers hit the woodwork twice in the first half and found the gloves of Rutgers junior goalkeeper Ciaran Dalton four times before Mihalic’s winner. “Great road win to start the Big Ten season,” IU head coach Todd Yeagley said. “Doing it late was fantastic. I thought our team performed well, and it’s important to get a win to start conference play.”
In the 22nd minute Senior forward Justin Weiss slipped a one-touch through ball into the path of Mihalic, who fired a first-time shot that Dalton’s fingertips pushed into the far post and out. Ten minutes later Senior forward Samuel Sarver cut in from the left and fired a shot that dipped but not in time to miss the crossbar. Ten minutes into the second half Indiana saw a pair of chances saved by Dalton within moments of each other. Sarver raced past his marker in transition and squared to Weiss, but his attempt was right to Dalton. Sophomore forward Collins Oduro was on the follow-up, but Dalton leaped to push his attempt away. In the 87th minute Senior midfielder Patrick McDonald played a cross-field ball to Sarver on the right wing, who rocketed past his defender into the box and towards the end line before playing behind to Mihalic. Mihalic’s first-time effort snuck under Dalton for the score. Indiana earned its first win in Piscataway and first win in a Big Ten opener since the 2020-21 season. Mihalic scored his fourth goal of the season, bringing his total to five goal contributions (four goals, one assist) in six matches. The senior reached 40 points in his career with 18 goals and four assists. Sarver earned his second assist of the season, while McDonald tallied his first assist and second goal contribution. McDonald and Mihalic appeared in their 75th match Friday night. Sarver reached the same milestone in Monday’s match versus Dayton. Indiana returns home for a two-match homestand. The Hoosiers will host Evansville tomorrow night at 7:30pm before they resume Big Ten play Friday against Maryland at 7pm.
