Evansville gets a Second Half Equalizer to get a 1-1 Draw with Indiana University Men’s Soccer The Evansville Purple Aces found the net in the second half to get a 1-1 draw against the Indiana Hoosiers Tuesday Night at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Indiana is 2-2-3 on the season and will host Maryland Friday Night at 7pm. Evansville is 4-3-1 on the season. The Hoosiers have dominated this series winning 33 of the 41 matches dating back to when the series began in 1978. Evansville has won 4 times with their last win coming on November 25, 1990, in the NCAA Tournament. This is fifth tie in the series and second in 2 years as the teams played to a 1-1 draw in Evansville on October 25, 2022. Indiana has won 22 of the last 25 meetings against the Purple Aces.

Indiana opened the scoring at the 30:54 mark when Samuel Sarver found the back of the for the first time this season when Jack Waggoner went on the attack and Justin Weiss left it for Sarver who went bottom left corner to give the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead and Waggoner’s first assist of the season.  For Sarver his 20th career goal in his 77th career game and Waggoner his 3rd career assist in his 49th career game for the Hoosiers. Indiana dominated the first half outshooting the Purple Aces 10-1 and 4-0 shots on goal. Evansville Freshman Goalkeeper Michael Maroz made three saves and Indiana Goalkeeper J.T. Harms did not make a save. Evansville committed 11 of the 15 fouls in the first half. The Hoosiers had five corner kicks and Evansville did not have a corner kick and neither team was called for offsides.

Indiana continued to create chances in the second half but were unable to convert. Evansville found the net at the 72:59 mark when Jacopo Fedrizzi went bottom left of goal past Indiana Goalkeeper J.T. Harms off his left foot to tie the game at 1-1 and get his first goal of the season. The game was physical as there 30 fouls called and 4 yellow cards. Evansville accounted for 24 fouls and 3 yellow cards. Indiana outshot the Purple Aces 20-6 and 6-3 shots on goal. Evansville Goalkeeper Michael Maroz made 6 saves and has given up 12 goals and made 29 saves in 8 games as a Freshman from Elk Grove, Illinois. J.T Harms made 2 saves and has given up 8 goals and made 18 saves in 7 games. Indiana had 9 corner kicks and Evansville had 3 corner kicks and both teams were called for offsides twice.

The Hoosiers are still looking for answers 7 games into the season and 11 regular season games left to keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive. This was game where Indiana controlled the game throughout the match on the stat sheet but Soccer is a game where it takes just one shot and one goal to make the difference and Evansville’s first shot on goal went in the net and gave all the momentum to Evansville and they get out of Bloomington with 1-1 draw and head back to Evansville snapping a three-game losing streak after winning the first three matches of the season.

Indiana University Men’s Tennis completes play at the MTSU Fall Invite Indiana Men’s Tennis has finished the first event of the fall season at the MTSU Fall Invite.  The Hoosiers competed against players from five different teams over the course of three days.  On day one, five Hoosiers found success in singles play, earning wins on their respective courts. Freshman Braeden Gelletich earned his first win as a Hoosier, taking the court against Kristian Thomas (MTSU) in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.  During day two, three Hoosiers duos would earn wins in doubles play. Freshman Karan Raghavendra would earn his first win at Indiana alongside Nikola Kolyachev v against Oliver Thoney/Giovanni Ciocca (LU), 6-4. 

In singles play, all eight Hoosiers competing would sweep the competition and win on their respective courts. Freshman Matteo Antonescu earned his first collegiate win in three sets against Nick Roddy (Vandy), 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-1. On the final day of competition, Facundo Yunis and Braeden Gelletich would start off the day with a win in doubles against Ian Cruz/Alejandro Moreno (UT), 7-6 (16). Matteo Antonsecu and Karan Raghavendra also found success in doubles play, taking the win on their court against Lance Nisbet/Jose Garcia (UT), 6-0. In singles play, Nikola Kolyachev would earn himself a win in three sets against Ian Cruz (UT), 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. Braeden Gelletich would follow up with a win of his own against Lance Nisbet (UT), 6-0, 6-1.  Indiana will be back in action On Saturday, September 21st, to compete in the ITA All American Championships. 

Kick Time and Televison Coverage announced for the Indiana-Maryland Football Game As is the case each season, the Big Ten is rolling out kick times and television designations a couple weeks ahead of each game. On Monday the league announced Indiana’s week five game vs. Maryland will be a noon kickoff that will air on the Big Ten Network. The game will be IU’s second straight noon kick of the season following this weekend’s game vs. Charlotte, also on BTN. Maryland is off to a 2-1 start with a win at home over UConn (50-7) and at Virginia (27-13).  They lost their only Big Ten game to this point, 27-24 at home vs. Michigan State.  The Terps host Villanova this weekend before heading to Bloomington.

Taylor University Football Repeats Sweep of MSFA Weekly Honors For the second-straight week, Taylor took all three Mid-States Football Association Mideast League Player-of-the-Week awards, this time with Kyle Turanchick, Aven Jones and Isaac Hoke being recognized on the heels of a 52-29 win over Judson. Turanchick scored the first two touchdowns of the night for Taylor, giving the Trojans early leads of 7-0 and 17-7. The sophomore finished with 81 yards on just seven touches, averaging 11.6 yards a pop, highlighted by a 44-yard touchdown run. Jones led the TU defensive effort by picking up 10 total stops. The linebacker tallied three solo hits and seven assisted tackles, resulting in a third-straight double-digit tackle output to open the season. Hoke split time among three kickers for Taylor in the lopsided affair, leading the trio with five points without a miss. Hoke hit both of his point-after tries and was pure from 44 yards out for the lone field goal of the night.

The MSFA Player-of-the-Week award is the first for Turanchick and Hoke, with Jones taking the honor for the third time in his career and the second time this season. With the three awards, Taylor Athletics now boasts nine weekly honors for the 2024-2025 year, with seven of those coming from the gridiron. Taylor (3-0, 1-0 MSFA) will return to action on Saturday, September 21 at 4:30 pm with a non-league game at Kentucky Christian (1-2).

Indianapolis Indians Play by Play Man Howard Kellman to Broadcast This Friday’s New York Yankees-Oakland Athletics Baseball Game Make it a high-five for Howard Kellman. The Indianapolis Indians announced that Kellman, Voice of the Indians, who this week will complete his 48th season as the Indians’ play-by-play voice, is headed to the big leagues for the fifth time. He will handle play-by-play duties on the New York Yankees Radio Network (WFAN 101.9 FM & Sports Radio 66 AM) on Friday, Sept. 20, at Oakland Coliseum, home of the Oakland Athletics.

Kellman has previously worked behind the microphone for the Chicago White Sox (1984), New York Mets (2014) and Yankees (2022-23). After fulfilling pinch-hit duties for the Yankees-Rays game on Sept. 2, 2022, at Tropicana Field, he became the only voice in baseball history to handle radio play-by-play duties for both New York-based ballclubs. He earned another pinch-hit callup to the Yankees last year during a September Road series against Kansas City. Kellman first joined the Indians in 1974 and has been the club’s lead play-by-play voice in all but two seasons (1975, 1980) since his rookie campaign. On July 4 this summer, the Indians recognized Kellman and the 50th anniversary of his first season by naming the radio booths at Victory Field in his honor.
“I am thankful to both the Yankees and WFAN for giving me a third opportunity to broadcast a big-league game,” said Kellman, a Brooklyn, N.Y. native and Brooklyn College graduate. “I have greatly enjoyed calling games for the Yankees each of the last two seasons and am honored to be behind the mic once again for the 27-time World Series champion New York Yankees.” Kellman will be joined by Yankees color commentator Suzyn Waldman in the visiting radio booth at Oakland Coliseum. Waldman has been part of Yankees radio broadcasts since 2005. First pitch is at 9:40 PM ET for the Sept. 20 matchup between the Yankees and Athletics.

When Indianapolis’ 2024 season wraps up this weekend in St. Paul, Minn., Kellman will have called 6,914 games in his tenure with the Indians, a run that includes 13 division titles, seven postseason championships and nine no-hitters thrown by Indy. He has been part of the radio broadcast team for three Triple-A All-Star Games, including the 1989 Midsummer Classic in Columbus, Ohio, the 2001 contest at Indianapolis’ Victory Field and most recently the 2013 showcase in Reno, Nev. In addition, he led the broadcast team for ESPN’s coverage of the Triple-A World Series from 2006-08. Kellman was honored as Indiana’s Sportscaster of the Year in 2002 and was inducted into the Indiana Sportswriters & Sportscasters Association Hall of Fame in 2009. He added two more inductions to his ledger in 2015 with the Indiana Broadcast Pioneers Hall of Fame and in 2018 with the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.

Taylor Trojans Men’s Golf Tops a Pair of Ranked Foes at Keiser Shootout Playing a field that included six teams ranked inside the NAIA Top 25, the RV Taylor men’s golf team showed well, tying for sixth-of-11 teams and ahead of No. 23 Lawrence Tech and No. 25 Ave Maria. Second-ranked Keiser ran away with the team title, taking each of the top three spots on the team leaderboard, with its top lineup coming in 22 shots under par at the par-67 PGA National Resort Match Course. The first non-Keiser squad in the standings belonged to No. 20 Webber International, 28 strokes over par and 50 shots back of Keiser’s lead. No. 12 Southeastern finished at 31-over in fifth, with RV Taylor and No. 14 Saint Thomas tying for sixth at 41-over. The field was rounded out by No. 23 Lawrence Tech and No. 25 Ave Maria tying for eighth at 43-over, with unranked SCAD Savannah and Florida College taking the final two spots. Porter Dick led the Trojans by tying for 14th with scores of 72, 64 and 71 on the par-67 course. Will Schuitema fired a 68 in the third round to climb eight spots into 22nd, with Kyle Kasitz (37th), Tanner Conklin (40th) and Matthew Albright (44th) rounding out the TU lineup. RV Taylor will return north to compete in the Grace Invitational on September 30.
