He’s the first rookie to win pole for the Indy 500 since 1983. He’s also the first Israeli driver to win pole for the Indy 500. Shwartzman drives for PREMA Racing, which is in its first year in IndyCar. “The car was just perfect, all four laps,” Shwartzman said. “For me, it’s like a race win, honestly.” Shwartzman shared the mentality he had during qualifying weekend. “The mentality was to be just smooth, careful,” Shwartzman said. “Not to go too aggressive and not to go too soft. And yeah, I think that’s the perfect balance we managed to get it.” Shwartzman won pole with an average speed of 232.790 miles per hour.
“I think the main key is the approach that we had,” Shwartzman said. “We didn’t have experience. I’m a rookie. Nobody would expect me to be in this position, not even me. I didn’t even expect it myself. But I think the approach we had with the team is just go steady, step by step. We knew that the Indy 500 is not forgiving. Any mistake can be costly. And we were like, let’s take it step-by-step. Do not lose confidence.” Shwartzman will be joined by Takuma Sato and Pato O’Ward in the first row for the Indy 500. Scott McLaughlin won pole for the Indy 500 in 2024. The 109th Running of the Indianapolis 500 is scheduled for Sunday.

Jacob Abel Fails to Qualify for the Indianapolis 500 Dale Coyne Racing’s Jacob Abel failed to qualify for the Indianapolis 500. His teammate, Rinus VeeKay, was the final qualifier for the race. Marco Andretti and Marcus Armstrong were the other two drivers to qualify for the Indy 500 in Last Chance Qualifying. “As soon as we hit Saturday, we just didn’t have any pace. Honestly just kept getting slower and slower each run,” Abel said. “Unfortunately, been preparing for this a little bit the last couple of days, or the last day, really. We were fast all week. I felt really good with the race car all week long. We were in a good place.”
Nolan Siegel went and gave Abel a hug after he failed to qualify for the race. Siegel was bumped from the Indy 500 in 2024. Siegel qualified 26th for the 2025 Indianapolis 500. “I do appreciate all the support from the other drivers,” Abel said. “It means the world to me.” Despite failing to qualify, Abel said he will still be at the Indianapolis 500. “I’m a huge fan of this race,” Abel said. “I’ve been to the last 12 of them. It’s going to be hard to be a fan this year at the race, for sure, but just going to keep moving forward. It’s been a tough year so far and just going to keep our heads down and hopefully our luck will turn around a little bit.” This is Abel’s rookie season in IndyCar. He finished second in INDY NXT in 2024, where he won three races and three poles. He’s 27th in the IndyCar Series Championship standings. “We’ll be back next year, hopefully”
