Indiana University Women’s Basketball hosts Northwestern in a “Must Win” Game  The Indiana Hoosiers host the Northwestern Wildcats this afternoon at 2 PM In Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall with the game streaming on Big Ten Network Plus. Indiana leads the All-time series 28-17 including a 17-5 record in Bloomington. Indiana has won the last six meetings and Northwestern beat Indiana 71-69 in overtime on January 18, 2020, in Bloomington.  Indiana is 11-11 on the season and 0-10 in the Big Ten. Northwestern is 8-13 overall and 2-8 in the Big Ten. With eight games remaining in conference play Northwestern sits in the 15th and final spot for the Big Ten Tournament to be held at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis in March.

Rutgers, Indiana and Penn State are all on the outside looking in as the bottom three stay home as the top 15 make the tournament. A win for Indiana over Northwestern will put them a game behind the Wildcats and gives them a chance with a favorable schedule left including a road trip to Rutgers and a home game with Penn State at the end of the season.  A loss to the Wildcats means the Hoosiers would be three games back of the Wildcats and would have to win four of their last seven games and Northwestern would have to lose out for the Hoosiers to have a chance to make it to the postseason in March or they will be sitting at home.

Indiana has lost nine in a row and seven by double digits as the Hoosiers suffered their biggest defeat of the season at home Thursday Night losing by 28 points to Michigan 95-67. Michigan forced 23 Indiana turnovers by using the full court press and scored 34 points off those turnovers and dominated inside by scoring 54 points in the paint. Michigan led 49-31 at halftime and outscored Indiana 46-36 in the second half.  Sophomore Forward Zania Socka-Nguemen missed eight games earlier in the season with a lower leg injury. Socka-Nguemen has played 12 games for the Hoosiers averaging 11.8 points and a team leading 8.7 rebounds per game. The Hoosiers are without her services after she suffered a lower leg injury on the opposite foot before the Purdue game a week ago missing the last two games.  Head Coach Teri Moren said after the Michigan game Thursday Night there is no time table for return and it leaves the Hoosiers short-handed as they have dealt with injuries all season long and had to deal with the departure of Sophomore Valentyna Kadlecova who left the team at the end of the first semester to return home to the Czech Republic to pursue a professional basketball career.

Shay Ciezki and Lenee Beaumont are the only two Hoosiers that average double figures and combine average 34.6 points per game while the team averages 70.4 points.  Ciezki averages 23.1 points and 1.5 steals per game and tied her season low with 13 points against Michigan. Beaumont averages 13.5 points and leads the team with 3 assists per game. Beaumont scored 13 points against Michigan and Freshman Maya Makalusky les the Hoosiers with 16 points as the Fishers Native averages 7.5 points per game.  The Hoosiers average 11.9 assists and 15.7 turnovers per game. Indiana is shooting 47% from the field, 38% from three-point range and 78% form the free throw line. The Hoosiers are off to their worst start in Big Ten Play since 2011-12 when they started off 0-14 and finished the season with a 6-24 record and a 1-15 record in the Big Ten.

Grace Sullivan leads the Wildcats with 21.8 points and 1.2 steals per game and scored her 1,000th career point in a 89-73 loss at Nebraska Wednesday Night. Tayla Thomas averages 10.4 points along with a team leading 8.3 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game. Sullivan is 6-4 and Thomas is 6-3 and will lose a matchup issue for the Hoosiers with a thin frontcourt. Casey Harter averages 10.1 points per game. Caroline Lau leads Northwestern with 8.8 assists while averaging 8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.  Northwestern averages 65.5 points, 18 assists and 15.6 turnovers per game. The Wildcats shoot 42%, 29% from three-point range and 70% from the free throw line. The Wildcats have a 16 Player Roster that Represents Pennsylvania, New York, Massachusetts, Georgia, Connecticut, Maryland, California, Illinois, New Jersey, North Carolina, Spain and China. The Wildcats have 6 Seniors, 3 Juniors, 4 Sophomores and 3 Freshman on the team.  Northwestern Head Coach Joe McKeown is in his final season as a Head Coach as he announced his retirement on March 24, 2025, that the 2025-26 season will be his last. The 69-year-old has been a head coach since 1986 coaching at New Mexico State from 1986-89, George Washington from 1989-2008 and Northwestern since 2008 with an overall record of 785-445 in his 40 years as a Head Coach.

The Hoosiers and Head Coach Teri Moren are used to winning and have not had a losing season since 2014-15 when the Hoosiers finished 15-16 in her first season in Bloomington.  Indiana has had incredible fan support for the last decade and Coach Moren after the game Thursday to keep supporting this team and don’t give up on this team even though it has not been the season that anyone had hoped.   A win today gives the Hoosiers the hope that Big Ten Tournament is still in sight and for Northwestern a win could shut the door for the bottom three and make the chances for Rutgers, Indiana and Penn State more difficult as we hit crunch time in the Big Ten Schedule.
