Bloomington South Looks for Back-to-Back Girls Track and Field Sectional Championships

By Nick Jenkinson-SCINN Sports Director

The Bloomington South Panthers are hosting the IHSAA Girls Track and Field Sectional this evening at 5:30 PM. 15 Teams will compete for the Sectional Title as the top three Individuals in each event and the top three relays will advance to the regional one week from tonight which will be hosted by Bloomington South.

In past years the Sectional and Regional has been hosted by Bloomington North but it has moved crosstown to Bloomington South because of ongoing construction with the facilities making it unavailable this year. But as always, the case for the Bloomington schools along with Edgewood and Lighthouse Christian they do not have to leave the county unless the make it to the State Finals on June 5 at North Central High School in Indianapolis.

Bloomfield, Brown County, Clay City, Cloverdale, Eastern Greene, Eminence, Linton, Martinsville, Owen Valley Shakamak and White River Valley round out the field for the sectional that has been dominated over the years by the Bloomington Schools.

Bloomington South is the defending champion and have won 20 Sectional titles since 1976. Bloomington North has won 22 Sectional Titles since 1974. There was no Girls Track and Field State Tournament in 2020 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The last time a team outside of Bloomington won the sectional was 1999 which was the last time Martinsville won a sectional title.

Bloomington South is the favorite to win the team title once again and Monroe County is expected to win several titles in both Individual and relay events. Bloomington North will be in the hunt along with Edgewood and Martinsville to try and dethrone the Panthers as there is some extra incentive this year by hosting the sectional and regional and getting to lift the trophy on their home track.
