Number 7 Michigan Officially Ends Indiana Football’s Bowl Hopes
The Number 7th ranked Michigan Wolverines racked up 411 yards in total offense in a 29-7 over Indiana before 109,000 fans at Michigan Stadium, also known as the Big House, in Ann Arbor Saturday Night. Michigan improves to 8-1 and 5-1 in the Big 10. Michigan has beaten the Hoosiers 25 of the last 26 games since 1987 along with winning 39 of the last 41 meetings. Indiana won in Bloomington last season and has not beaten Michigan in Ann Arbor since 1967 and Michigan leads the all-time series 60-10. The loss sends Indiana to 2-7 overall and 0-6 in the Big Ten. Indiana has been eliminated from bowl contention for this season as you need to finish the season with a 6-6 record or better when playing a 12-game regular season schedule. The Injuries continued to mount for the Hoosiers with cornerbacks Resee Taylor and Taiwan Mullen not making the trip. Offensive Lineman Luke Haggard was injured on the first play and Running Back Stephen Carr was injured after carrying the ball 3 times for 12 yards and left the Hoosiers with no scholarship running backs for the rest of the game as freshman Running Back Trent Howland was suspended before this game and will miss the Rutgers game for violating team rules. Outside Linebacker Jaren Handy suffered a lower leg injury after colliding with teammate Micah McFadden. Defensive End Ryder Anderson was briefly shaken up. Defensive End James Head Jr was banged up after a 3rd quarter tackle and defensive tackles Demarcus Elliott and Weston Kremer needed attention after they were injured during the game. “I’ve never seen anything like it,” Allen told Fischer about the injuries. “Stephen will be out who knows. Luke Haggard went down. He played just one snap. That was a big blow. Handy went down. That was another big blow. That’s three pretty good players right there” Head Coach Tom Allen told Don Fischer on the postgame radio interview. True Freshman Donaven McCulley got his 2nd career start at quarterback with Michael Penix Jr and Jack Tuttle out with injuries. McCulley who under constant pressure from the Michigan Defense was 10-24 for 88 yards passing along with 14 carries for 37 yards and was sacked. “Donaven struggled in that area,” Allen told Fischer about the lack of a passing attack. “He missed some open receivers. He showed his youth. He prepared well and worked hard, but with the pressure and the way they do things, he was uneven at times”. Chris Childers who is a transfer walk on from Indiana State scored his first career touchdown with a 1-yard score with 8:18 left before halftime to make it 10-7 with the Wolverines scoring the final 19 points of the game. Childers who is a redshirt junior played in 1 game in 2020 and has played in 9 games this season. Indiana had 195 yards of total offense in the game and just 53 in the 2nd half. Devon Matthews had an interception in the 4th quarter and Micah McFadden had a sack for his 14th straight game with a tackle for loss. Indiana will host Rutgers this Saturday for a noon kick on the Big Ten Network at Memorial Stadium. The Scarlet Knights will come in with 4-5 record and 1-5 record in the Big Ten after a 52-3 home loss to Wisconsin Saturday.
Indiana Women’s Basketball Routs University of Indianapolis in Exhibition
The Indiana Women’s Basketball team kicked of the 2021-22 season with 97-43 rout of Division II University of Indianapolis in an exhibition before a crowd of 1,842 fans at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall Friday Night. All 13 Players saw action for the cream and crimson and 11 scored with 6 in double figures. Mackenzie Holmes led the way with 19 points, Ali Patberg had 14, Grace Berger 13, Freshman Katlin Peterson added 12, Chloe Moore-McNeil had 11 and Aleska Glube scored 10 Points. Nicole Cardano-Hillary had 8 points, Kiandra Browne and Georgia Transfer Caitlin Hose scored 3 points each. Freshman Keyarah Berry and Grace Waggoner scored 2 points apiece while Arielle Wisne and Freshman Mona Zaric did not score. The Hoosiers had 19 assists, 16 steals and just 7 turnovers and force 25 Greyhounds turnovers. Indiana led for all but 14 seconds of the game leading 53-21 at halftime and outscoring the Greyhounds 41-13 in the second and third quarters. Indianapolis was led by Sadie Hill with 9 points. Indiana will start the season ranked 7th in the AP Poll and 8th in the coaches’ poll and will open the season Wednesday at Butler at 7 PM at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse.
Bloomington South beats Bloomington North 24-17 For Sectional Football Championship
The Bloomington South Panthers beat the Bloomington North Cougars 24-17 for the Class 5A Sectional Football Championship at Bloomington South Friday Night. The Panthers claim their 16th sectional championship in school history and the 7th in the last 8 years. Bloomington South continues to dominate the series with the cross-town rivals leading the all-time series 46-14 dating back to 1972 and are 8-2 all time in sectional meetings against the Cougars who finish the season at 7-3. The Panthers have won 3 straight and 11 of the last 12 meetings against the Cougars dating back to 2014. Bloomington South 8-2 will go for its 12 Regional Championship this Friday night at 7 pm when they travel to New Albany to face the Bulldogs in a rematch of August 20th season opener when the Panthers beat the Bulldogs 50-20 in Bloomington. New Albany is 8-3 and won its 3rd sectional title in school history and its first since 2002. Owen Valley beat Vincennes Lincoln 14-0 to win the Class 3A Sectional Championship game in Vincennes Friday Night for its 2nd sectional championship with the only other title coming in 1992. The Patriots are 10-1 under first year head coach Rob Gibson will host 10-2 Tri West on Friday night at 7 for the Class 3A regional championship game.
Indianapolis Colts Beat New York Jets 45-30
The Indianapolis Colts beat the New York Jets 45-30 on Thursday Night Football in Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. The Colts dominated the running game with 260 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns. Johnathan Taylor scored 2 touchdowns on 172 yards rushing and Nyhiem Hines added the third. Carson Wentz was 22-30 for 272 yards passing with 3 touchdowns and no interceptions. Wentz’s three touchdown passes went to Michael Pittman Jr, Jack Doyle and Offensive Lineman and Ball State graduate Danny Pinter who checked in as eligible receiver. Wentz has a 63.4 completion percentage along with 17 touchdowns and 3 interceptions this season. The Jets who are without starting quarterback Zach Wilson who was 2nd pick in the 2021 NFL Draft out of BYU due to Injury. Mike White from Western Kentucky got his 2nd career start and was 7-11 for 95 yards and a touchdown pass before leaving the game with a hand injury. Josh Johnson who played at the University of San Diego came in and was 27-41 for 317 yards with 3 touchdowns and an interception. The Jets fall to 2-6 and 0-5 on the road. The Colts are 4-5 on the season and 2-3 at home and will host the Jacksonville Jaguars at 1 pm Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium.
