Indiana Men’s Basketball Opens the Mike Woodson Era with a Win
Indiana Men’s Basketball beat Eastern Michigan 68-62 on Tuesday in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. It’s the 122nd season of Indiana Men’s Basketball and the first game for new head coach Mike Woodson. The Hoosiers led 36-19 at half and started the game on 10-0 run before the Eagles scored there first basket with 12:39 left in the first half. Parker Stewart hit two three pointers to start the game before Trayce Jackson-Davis knocked down two straight baskets before the Eagles called timeout. Jackson Davis found Jordan Geronimo on ally-oop with 11:39 left that got the crowd off their feet.
Trayce Jackson-Davis led the Hoosiers with a double-double 21 points and 14 rebounds, Xavier Johnson scored 14 points in his first game as Hoosier after transferring from Pittsburgh in the off season. Race Thompson pulled down 10 rebounds had 2 blocks and scored 5 points. The Hoosiers played 10 players and 19 points off the bench.
Eastern Michigan was led by Noah Farrahkhan with 18 points and Bryce McBride scored 12 points off the bench. Monty Scott pulled down 10 rebounds for Eastern Michigan who outscored the Hoosiers 43-32 in the 2nd half.
Indiana has won 22 of the last 23 season openers, The Hoosiers lead the all-time series with Eastern Michigan 5-0 and improve 75-12 all-time against the Mid-American Conference. Indiana host fellow MAC opponent Northern Illinois on Friday at 7 PM on Big Ten Network Plus.
Indiana Women’s Basketball Opens Regular Season at Butler
The Number 8/7 ranked Indiana Women’s Basketball kicks off 2021-22 regular season tonight when they travel to Indianapolis to take on the Butler Bulldogs tonight at 7 pm at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse. Indiana is 37-12 all time in season openers and it’s the first time the Hoosiers will open on the road in the Teri Moren era. Moren is beginning her 8th year as the head coach of the Hoosiers and 148-80 after leading the Hoosiers to schools first ever NCAA Sweet 16 and Elite 8 appearances a season ago.
Indiana beat The University of Indianapolis 97-43 in exhibition game last Friday in which 6 players scored in double figures. Mackenize Holmes led the way with 19 points and 11 of the 13 Hoosiers scored in the game and all 13 played in the game.
Butler beat Division III Trine 68-61 last Thursday night. Butler was 3-15 a season ago and Graduate Student Genesis Parker averaged 12.7 points and 8 new players are added to the 2021-22 roster. Butler is coach by Kurt Godlesvke who is 90-117 in his 8th season at Butler. Before going to Butler Godlesvke was the Girls Basketball Coach at Bedford North Lawrence High School for 7 seasons going 120-43 and win the 2013 Class 4A State Championship with a perfect 28-0 record.
Indiana is 7-1 all time against Butler and won the last meeting on December 11th, 2019 64-53 at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The two teams were scheduled to play last season but the game was canceled due to COVID-19 Pandemic when Butler had COVID concerns within its program last December.
Indiana Men’s Soccer Host Northwestern in Big 10 Tournament Semifinals
Indiana Men’s Soccer will host Northwestern at 2 PM this afternoon on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium in the Big 10 Tournament Semifinals and the game can be seen on the Big Ten Network. The Winner will advance to Sunday’s championship game against Michigan or Penn State which play in the other semifinal at Noon today in State College PA.
Indiana is 13-4-1 and 5-3 in the Big Ten and the 3 seed Hoosiers are coming off a 1-0 quarterfinal win against 6 seed Rutgers on Sunday. Northwestern is 6-8-3 and 3-5 in the Big Ten as the 7th seeded Wildcats knocked off 2 seed Maryland 3-2 on penalties after 0-0 draw. Indiana Beat Northwestern 2-1 on September 21st in the regular season matchup.
Indiana has been good at home this season going 9-3 and winning the last six matches. Indiana has shut out 8 of their last 9 opponents and conceded 5 goals in the last 13 games. Indiana has owned Northwestern all time 34-3-7 and has a three-game winning streak against the Wildcats and own a 5-1 all time record in the Big Ten Tournament. Northwestern last won at Indiana 1-0 on October 17th, 2004.
Edgewood Girls Basketball beats Bloomington South
Edgewood Girls Basketball beat Bloomington South 45-32 on the southside of Bloomington Tuesday Night as the Mustangs beat Panthers for the first time in over 20 years. Edgewood is 3-0 and will travel to South Putnam Friday before traveling to defending Class 2A State Champion Linton on Saturday. Bloomington South is 0-2 and will travel to Columbus East on Thursday and Jeffersonville Saturday afternoon.
Trista Helms had 15 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals to lead Edgewood. Clary Sherfield had 14 points. Bloomington South was led with a double-double from Caitlin Helm 13 points and 11 rebounds along with 13 points and 5 rebounds from Carlie Pedersen.
The Edgewood defense gave Bloomington South fits all night as the Panthers committed 30 turnovers and at least 7 in each quarter.
Across town Bloomington North lost to 4th ranked Bedford North Lawrence 66-28 at home. The Cougars fall to 1-2 on the season and host Brown County on Saturday. Bedford North Lawrence is 2-0 on the season and host Mitchell on Saturday Night.
