4th Ranked Indiana Women’s Basketball Beats Norfolk State 72-42
Less than 48 hours after a 21-point win against Kentucky Sunday Evening, the 4th Ranked Indiana Hoosiers beat the Norfolk State Spartans 72-42 before 3,398 in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers are 3-0 on the season and will hit the road for three games before coming back to Bloomington with a big December 2 matchup with NC State.
Indiana led 17-14 after the first quarter and Head Coach Teri Moren talked her team about the possible letdown the team could face after coming a big win Sunday. “We were flat tonight and struggled to find a rhythm offensively” Moren Said in her post game press conference. The Hoosiers controlled the second quarter outscoring the Spartans 22-7 to lead 39-21 at halftime. Indiana outscored the Spartans 18-15 in the 3rd quarter and put the game away in the 4th with a 15-6 run.
Mackenzie Holmes and Aleska Gulbe scored 22 points each. Holmes had 18 in the first half and dominated in the low block scoring at will in the first half when she was given the ball. Gulbe went 3-4 from three-point range and coach Moren was pleased to see the shots go down. “When Aleska came back from Latvia this summer she was one of our best shooters in the preseason, she has been putting in the work to improve her game and it’s nice to see the sweat equity paying off and seeing those shots go down tonight” Moren said. Ali Patberg added 17 points, Grace Berger had 6 points but dished out 11 assists and Nicole Cardano Hillary was held to 1 point going 0-2 from three-point range, 0-5 from the field and 1-2 from the line.
Norfolk State was led by Deja Francis with 12 points and the Spartans forced 22 Hoosier turnovers and had 13 steals. The Spartans are 2-2 on the season and this was the 2nd Big Ten Opponent they had face in 2 days losing at Ohio State Sunday. This also marked the first time that Indiana had face a team from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.
Indiana travels to Quinnipiac in Hamden Connecticut on Saturday for a 4 PM matchup with the 1-1 Bobcats. Quinnipiac travels to Army for 6pm tip off with the Black Knights on Thursday. Saturday’s game will mark the home opener for Quinnipiac who are in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and the first time the schools have met.
Indiana Men’s Basketball Host St John’s
Indiana Men’s Basketball is back in action tonight at 9pm in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall when they host the 2-0 St John’s Red Storm as part of the Gavitt Tip Off Games and game will broadcast on Fox Sports 1. The event matches the Big Ten against the Big East Conference Honors Dave Gavitt who was the first commissioner of the Big East Conference from 1979-1990. Gavitt passed away September 16th, 2011 at age 73. Gavitt was the head coach at Dartmouth and Providence from 1969-1979 and had 209-84 record with 2 NCAA Tournament Appearances and 3 NIT Tournament Appearances. Gavitt was the Athletic Director at Providence from 1971-1992. Gavitt was involved in USA Basketball in 1980 when he was selected to be the head coach for the Olympic Team for the Moscow Olympics in which the United States did not participate due to the boycott, but then in 1992, he developed the concept for the” Dream Team” which was made up of NBA Players and considered the greatest team ever assembled. He was Inducted into both the Basketball and the College Basketball Hall of Fame
Indiana All-American forward Trayce Jackson-Davis has been named Big Ten Men’s Basketball Player of the Week after averaging 20 points, 10.5 rebounds and five blocked shots in leading the Hoosiers to wins over Eastern Michigan and Northern Illinois to start the season. The Greenwood, Ind., native and Center Grove High School graduate shot 65.2% from the floor making 15-of 23-field goal attempts. It is the third time in his career that he has earned the distinction from the league. He had 21 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots against EMU and posted his 23rd career double-double. IU improved to 18-5 in those games. Against NIU, he scored 19 points, 17 in the first half, and notched seven rebounds and a career-high seven blocked shots, tied for the fourth best effort in school history at Indiana. He is 11 points away from becoming the 54th player in school-history to eclipse the 1,000-point mark at Indiana.
Xavier Johnson is averaging 13.5 points per game and has scored double figures in his first two games in Indiana uniform. Johnson transferred from Pittsburgh in the off season. Race Thompson averages 8.5 points per game. Indiana has beaten Eastern Michigan 68-62 and Northern Illinois 85-49. The Hoosiers are in the middle of six game homestand to start the season.
St John’s is 2-0 on the season with wins over Mississippi Valley State 119-61 and Saint Peters. 91-70 at home. St John’s had 4 players in double figures against Saint Peters with Julian Champagine leading the way with 22 points. The Red Storm had 6 players in double figures against Mississippi Valley State with Champagine leading the way with 20 points. Champainge is 6-8 junior from Brooklyn New York. 7 of the 15 players on the St John’s roster are from the New York. St John’s is located in Queens New York. Mike Anderson is the head coach at St John’s in his 3rd season with a 35-26 record and an overall record 405-227 with stops at Arkansas, UAB and Missouri.
Bloomington North and Bloomington South Girls Basketball Fall on The Road
Bloomington North Girls Basketball lost at Martinsville 44-38 Tuesday Night. The Cougars fall to 2-3 on the season and will travel to Covenant Christian Saturday afternoon at 1:30 PM. Martinsville improves to 3-2 and will travel to Indianapolis Chatard Saturday at 1:30 PM.
4th Ranked Bedford North Lawrence beat Bloomington South 57-22 in Bedford. Sophomore Chloe Spreen scored 17 points to lead Bedford North Lawrence. The Panthers are 0-5 and travel to Southport Friday Night while the Stars stay unbeaten at 4-0 and Travel to Indianapolis North Central Friday Night.
A COVID Case has hit the Edgewood Girls Basketball Program knocking the Mustangs out of action for the next 8 days. Edgewood’s home opener with Bloomfield Tuesday Night has been postponed to a later date. Edgewood’s game Saturday with Sullivan has been moved to December 20th. The Mustangs are scheduled to host White River Valley Next Monday Night at home and will have to masks while playing until day 14. Edgewood is then scheduled to play on December 3rd.
Indiana Water Polo Announces 2022 Schedule
Indiana head water polo coach Taylor Dodson announced the 2022 schedule. The entire slate includes 27 games prior to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) Championships. The regular season features six MPSF matchups and two home games at Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington, Ind.
Indiana will start the season with five weekend invitationals including the UCSB Winter Invite (Santa Barbara, Calif.), the Michigan Invitational (Ann Arbor, Mich.), Fresno State Invite (Fresno, Calif.), Kalbus Invite (Irvine, Calif.), and the Harvard Invitational (Cambridge, Mass.). The invitationals will span the course of January 21st to March 6th. The Hoosiers’ final eight regular season games include trips for single-game weekends against USC and Michigan in mid-March. After that, the Hoosiers host their only two home games on March 21 and March 26 against California and San Jose State, respectively.
To close out the regular season, Indiana will hit the road to face California State East Bay, Santa Clara, Stanford, on April 9 and 10 before wrapping up at Arizona State on April 16. The MPSF Championships will take place between April 22-24th. Seeding and matchups for that weekend will be determined by regular season results among MPSF teams.
