Indiana Football Closes Out the Season with Purdue
What has been a very rough season for Indiana Football will come to an end tomorrow afternoon when the Hoosiers travel to West Lafayette to battle the Purdue Boilermakers in the Old Oaken Bucket Game at 3:30 PM on Fox Sports 1. Indiana is 2-9 on the season and 0-8 in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers won the game 44-41 in 2 overtimes on November 30, 2019 in West Lafayette. The game was canceled last year due to COVID-19 concerns within both programs. This is the 123rd overall meeting between the two schools with Purdue leading the overall series 74-42-6. This will be the 93rd time that the two teams have played for the Old Oaken Bucket which Purdue has 60-32-3 advantage since the trophy was started in 1925.
Indiana has struggled this year with over 30 injuries on its team. Michael Penix Jr and Jack Tuttle have both missed time at quarterback with true Freshman Donaven McCulley and walk on Grant Gremel getting the snaps. The Hoosiers have been hurting at the Running Back position with all the scholarship players either injured or leaving the program and have turned to walk on players to play. Ty Fryfogle who returned after a great season has struggled with 44 catches for 493 yards and just 1 touchdown. Peyton Hendershot is one touchdown shy of tying Ted Bosler’s record for most career touchdowns by an Indiana Tight End. Hendershot has the most receptions 130 and yardage 1,428 by a tight end in school history surpassing Bosler earlier in the season. Bosler who played at Indiana from 2010-13 had 15 career touchdowns.
Purdue is 7-4 and 5-3 in the Big Ten. The Boilermakers are by Wide Receiver David Bell who has 87 catches for 1,207 yards and 5 touchdowns. Aidan O’Connell has thrown for 2,899 yards, 19 touchdowns and 8 interceptions. King Doerue has run the ball 121 times for 439 yards and 2 touchdowns. Purdue is coached by Jeff Brohm who is 26-29 in his 5th season as head coach. Brohm coached at Western Kentucky from 2014-16 was 30-10 in Bowling Green and 56-39 overall.
Tom Allen is 26-31 in 5th season as Indiana head coach. The focus for the Hoosiers has been clear this week. Beat Purdue and keep the bucket in Bloomington.
Indiana Men’s Basketball hosts Marshall
The Indiana Hoosiers Men’s Basketball Team will welcome in the Marshall Thundering Herd to Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall tomorrow night at 7 PM in another Big Ten Network telecast. Indiana is off to a 5-0 start under 1st year coach Mike Woodson. The Hoosiers are averaging 75 points per game and giving up 52. 8 on defense. Indiana has held three of their five opponents to under 50 points so far this season. The defensive improvement has been the focus for Coach Woodson and his staff after the Hoosiers struggled under former coach Archie Miller. Indiana beat Jackson State 70-35 Tuesday Night and Louisiana 76-44 Sunday Night. The Hoosiers Held Louisiana to 19.2 percent shooting from the field and Jackson State 20.7 percent. That is the first time since 2009 the Hoosiers have had back-to-back games with the lowest shooting percentage of an opponent.
Trayce Jackson-Davis is averaging 16.0 points per game and 8.2 rebounds. Jackson-Davis who has scored in double figures in all five game and has two double-doubles leads the team in blocks with 18. Xavier Johnson leads the team in assists with 16, averages 10.2 points per game and has scored in double figures 3 times this season. Race Thompson leads the team with 7 steals and averages 8.8 points per game. Miller Kopp is averaging 7.6 Points. Freshman Tamar Bates is at 7.2 points and Parker Stewart is at 6.8 Points. Logan Duncomb will be serving his third and final game of his suspension for violating team rules. Rob Phinesse has missed the last two games with a lower leg injury suffered against St John’s and is unclear how much time he will miss. Trey Galloway will be out with the broken wrist he suffered in the St John’s game. Galloway was back on the sidelines Sunday night after having successful surgery a week ago.
Marshall located in Huntington West Virginia will play its first road game this season comes in 4-1 with wins over Wright State 96-88, Milligan 80-58, Jackson State 80-66 and Louisiana 93-79. The lone loss came November 18th 67-65 to Campbell. Marshall averages 82.8 points per game and has four players who average double figures. Taevion Kinsey at 19.8, Darius George at 14.8 Obinna Anochili-Killen at 14.0 off the bench and Andrew Taylor at 10.6. Anochili-Killen leads the team in rebounds with 47 and blocks with 30, while Taylor leads the team in assists with 37 and steals with 17. Marshall is coached by Dan D’Antoni who scored 1,109 Points at Marshall from 1967-1970 and was the head coach at Socatsee High School in Myrtle Beach South Carolina from 1975-2005. D’ Antoni won over 500 games and founded the Beach Ball Classic which has become one of the best High School Tournaments in the country. D’Antoni begins his 8th season and has a record of 132-100 and took Marshal to the 2018 NCAA Tournament Second Round. Marshall won the 2019 College Insider Postseason Tournament. D’ Antoni was an assistant coach in the NBA from 2005-2014 with the Phoenix Suns, New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers where he coached under his younger brother Mike D’ Antoni.
Indiana Women’s Basketball falls to Stanford with Miami up next
th Ranked Indiana Women’s Basketball fell to 7th ranked and defending national champion Stanford 69-66 Thanksgiving Afternoon in the Baha Mar Pink Flamingo Championship at Baha Mar Convention Center in Nassau Bahamas. The Game was close throughout with Stanford leading 17-14 after the first quarter. The quarters were even after that with both teams scoring 20 points in the 2nd quarter, 18 points in 3rd quarter and 14 points in the 4th quarter. Stanford Coach Tara VanDerveer is 2-0 against her Alma Mater as Stanford head coach and this was the first meeting between the two teams since 2001.
Indiana was led in scoring by Ali Patberg with 19 Points, Nicole Cardano-Hillary added 18 points and Grace Berger added 12. The Hoosiers were 23-71 from the field for 32.4 percent, 6-14 from three-point range for 43 percent, and 14-20 from the line for 70 percent. Indiana had 38 rebounds, 12 steals, 10 assists, 7 turnovers, and 2 blocks. Mackenzie Holmes who has been leading the Hoosiers in scoring was held to 6 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Aleska Gulbe scored 8 points and Chloe Moore-McNeil hit a three off the bench.
Stanford 4-1 was led by Cameron Brink with 21 points and 22 rebounds as the Hoosiers had no answer for the 6-4 Sophomore from Beaverton, Oregon inside. Brink added 5 assists and 5 Blocks and becomes the first women’s basketball to have 20-20-5 and 5 in over 20 years. Francesca Belibi who was a high school sensation in Colorado and known for her dunking in games scored 13 points off the bench for the Cardinal. Stanford dominated the glass with 59 rebounds. The Cardinal were 29-70 from the field for 41 percent, 3-12 from three-point range for 25 percent and 8-18 from the free throw line for 44.4 percent. Stanford’s leading scorer Haley Jones was held to 8 points and Lexie Hull who averaged double digits coming to the game scored 3 points. The Cardinal had 16 assists, 16 turnovers, 7 blocks and 4 steals.
The Hoosiers are 4-1 and will face Miami Florida tomorrow night 8:30pm. The Hurricanes are 4-1 and lost to Washington State 62-47 Thursday afternoon. Karla Erjavec was the leading scorer with 11 points. Miami struggled against Washington State shooting 16-54 from the field for 29 percent, 4-20 for 20 percent from three-point range and 11 -16 from the free throw line for 68 percent. Miami had 27 rebounds, 16 turnovers, 11 steals, 6 assists and 1 block in Thursday’s game. Kelsey Marshall leads Miami in scoring with 11.6 points per game. This will be the 5th all time meeting between the two teams and the first outside the state of Florida. The Series is tied 2-2 as the Hoosiers have won in Coral Gables twice 69-54 December 5,2008 and 58-45 on December 4, 2019. Miami beat the Hoosiers November 25, 2006 79-70 and December 20, 2015 89-75 in Winter Park Florida.
Indiana Men’s Soccer travels to Washington for 3rd round of NCAA Tournament
The Indiana Hoosiers Men’s Soccer Team will face the University of Washington Tomorrow night at 8pm Eastern time in Seattle in the NCAA Tournament Third Round. Indiana is 4-0 all time against the Huskies and this will be the fourth meeting in the NCAA Tournament between the two teams. The Teams last met September 8, 2001 in Portland Oregon when the Hoosiers won 1-0. This will be the first time the Hoosiers have visited Seattle since a 2-1-win November 25, 2000. Indiana has beaten Washington twice in Bloomington, The Hoosiers won both games by a 2-0 score on November 28, 1999 and November 22, 1992.
Indiana is 15-5-1 on the season and coming off a 2-0 win over Bowling Green Sunday in the Second Round of the Tournament. The Hoosiers are the number 15 national seed and are making their seventh consecutive sweet 16 appearance. The Hoosiers have posted 13th shutouts this season and 11 of those have come in the last 14 matches. Roman Celentano has posted 11 shutouts this season and 28 in his Hoosier career. Celentano is tied for 9th with Cary Field who played from 1974-77 with most career shutouts.
Washington is 15-1-2 on the season and number 2 national seed for the tournament. The Huskies are 7-1-1 at home this season. The only loss of the season came to the Number 1 national seed Oregon State on October 22nd at home in a 3-2 defeat. Washington tied Stanford 0-0 at home on October 31st and tied Oregon State on the road 2-2 November 11th in the regular season finale. Washington is coming off a 3-1 win over Portland Sunday night.
The Winner of this game will advance to the Quarterfinals to face the winner between 7 seed Duke and 10 seed St Louis. The Duke-St Louis game is tomorrow night at 7pm in Durham North Carolina.
