Indiana lawmakers address teacher shortage
While seeking a solution for the current shortage of teachers, the Indiana Legislature has 2 separate Bill proposals aimed at certifying part-timeK-12 teachers. The first, HB 1251, has passed the Committee and the full House, and SB 356 is scheduled for Senate vote today. The versions are similar in structure, allowing for adjunct teachers with a certain amount of work experience in the subject they want to teach, to be granted permits to teach in the classroom, approved by the School District.
The Senate version of the Bill, being hailed “Teachers matter,” provides that the governing body of a school corporation may issue an adjunct teacher permit to an individual who meets certain requirements; and if a governing body of a school corporation issues an adjunct teacher permit to an individual, the school corporation may enter into a contract for employment with the individual as a part-time teacher of the school corporation. The language also specifies that such part-time teachers would not be subject to certain requirements regarding teacher salaries and school corporation local compensation plans, as they would not be a school employee for purposes of collective bargaining.
