Gary police officer shot, in stable condition
Sgt. William Fazekas of the Gary Police Department, who was shot and wounded Monday afternoon while responding to reports of gunshots, is now being listed in stable condition. The 32-year department veteran is assigned to the Gary Police Department’s Violent Crimes Division. A manhunt for the suspect is underway, being conducted the Gary Police Department, Lake County Sheriff’s Department Aviation Unit, as well as the Special Operations and patrol units.

Two-time IU alumnus to serve as vice president and general counsel
Attorney and Indiana University alumnus Anthony “Tony” Prather has been named IU’s Vice President and General Counsel, pending Board of Trustees approval. Parker’s new role will be to advise the university’s Trustees and administration on legal issues and to serve as the point of contact on all legal matters involving IU. The position is set to begin on February 22nd.
As a partner at Barnes & Thornburg, Prather advises clients across the nation and is often called on for his knowledge of federal and state employment and affirmative action laws. Prior to joining Barnes & Thornburg, Prather served as in-house counsel for Ameritech Corporation, Firestone Building Products Company, Firestone Industrial Products Company, and Firestone Polymers.
He received his law degree from the IU Maurer School of Law and his undergraduate degree from IU. Prather’s recent honors include: induction into the IU Maurer School of Law Academy of Law Alumni Fellows, recipient of an IU Bicentennial Medal, recipient of the Indiana Lawyer Leadership in Law Distinguished Barristers Award, Best Lawyers in America distinction annually since 2016 and recipient of the IU Maurer School of Law Distinguished Service and Samuel S. Dargan awards.
IUWBB rescheduled to play Michigan State at Assembly Hall this Saturday
Indiana University Women’s Basketball’s home game against Michigan State has been rescheduled for Saturday, February 12 at 3pm at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The original meeting was postponed on January 19 in accordance with the Big Ten’s COVID-19 protocols. Tickets from the original date will be valid for February 12. The game will also be the annual Head to The Hall Game where all tickets will be $1. More information can be found here.

1861 – On February 12th, Abraham Lincoln woke up on his 52nd birthday at the Bates House Hotel in Indianapolis (pictured). He had breakfast with Governor Oliver P. Morton. Lincoln’s wife, Mary, and son, Robert, joined him on the train as he continued his trip to Washington, D.C., to take the oath as the nation’s 16th President.
