7th ranked Indiana Women’s Basketball beats Michigan State, at Nebraska Tonight
The 7th ranked Indiana University Women’s Basketball team remains on top of the Big Ten after 76-58 win over Michigan State Saturday afternoon in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers are 18-3 overall and 10-1 in the Big Ten. Michigan State led 10-4 with 5 minutes to go in the first quarter, the Hoosiers tied the game at 10-10 with 2:28 to go in the first quarter. Tamara Farquhar hit a jumper with 2:06 left to make 12-12 Michigan State. Chloe Moore-McNeil hit a three pointer to make it 13-12 with 1:43 to go in the first quarter as the Hoosiers did not trail the rest of the game. Grace Berger scored a career high 29 points and was a perfect 11-11 from the free throw line. Aleska Gulbe added 13 points; Nicole Cardano-Hillary and Ali Patberg scored 12 points each; Chloe Moore-McNeil added 10 points off the bench; while Kiandra Browne, Grace Waggoner, Kaitlin Peterson, Arielle Wisne, and Mona Zaric all played but did not score. Mackenzie Holmes was in uniform and warmed up before the game but did not play. Holmes has been out since early January after a knee injury in practice but there are hints from Head Coach Teri Moren that Holmes is getting closer and closer to a return.
Michigan State 13-11 overall and 7-6 in the Big Ten was led by Alisia Smith with 12 Points. Nia Clouden who leads the Spartans in scoring was held to 10 points and picked up three fouls in the first half. Frustration boiled over for head coach Suzy Merchant who was hit with a technical foul with 6:46 to go before halftime for voicing her displeasure on the lack of foul calls going against the Hoosiers. Indiana did not commit a foul in the first quarter. Tayier Parks with hit with a technical foul with 8:40 left in the 3rd quarter after she was fouled and was clapping about the foul that the officials felt was done in a sarcastic manner.
Indiana is on the road at Nebraska this evening. The Hoosiers and Huskers will tip at 7pm with the game televised on the Big Ten Network. Nebraska beat Illinois 82-63 in Champaign Saturday afternoon. Jaz Shelley led four Huskers in double figures with 21 points. Bella Cravens who did play against the Hoosiers in January had a double-double 12 points and 11 rebounds Saturday. Indiana beat Nebraska 72-65 in Bloomington on January13th. Nebraska is 18-6 overall and 7-6 in the Big Ten.
Indiana Men’s Basketball Loses at Michigan State
Indiana Men’s Basketball fell to Michigan State 76-61 Saturday Afternoon at the Breslin Center in East Lansing Michigan. The Hoosiers have lost 3 in a row as they fall to 16-8 overall and 7-7 in the Big Ten. Xavier Johnson, Parker Stewart, Michael Durr, Khristian Lander and Tamar Bates all returned from a one game suspension against Northwestern Tuesday Night. Trey Galloway got the start in place of Parker Stewart. The Hoosiers were led by Trayce Jackson-Davis with 14 points, Race Thompson a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds and Tamar Bates scored 13 points off the bench. Coach Mike Woodson and Miller Kopp both were assessed technical fouls and Michigan State’s AJ Hoggard was ejected late in the second half for picking up his second technical foul.
Malik Hall led Michigan State with 18 points, Tyson Walker added 15 points and Hoggard score 14 points and the Spartans scored 44 points from the bench as Indiana scored 20. There were 5 ties and 9 lead changes in the game but Indiana could not finish down the stretch as the Spartans put the game out of reach. Michigan State improves to 18-6 overall and 9-4 in the Big Ten.
Indiana hosts Wisconsin Tomorrow night at 9pm inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Wisconsin lost to Rutgers 73-65 in Madison Saturday afternoon. The Badgers are 19-5 overall and 10-4 in the Big Ten.
Bloomington South Swimmer Kristina Paegle Wins Two Individual State Titles
Bloomington South Senior Kristina Paegle won the 100 meter and 200-meter freestyle at the IHSAA State Finals Saturday at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis. Paegle set state records in both events Friday in the preliminaries with a time of 48:00 in the 100 Freestyle and 1:45:02 in the 200 Freestyle knocking out a pair of marks from 2015. On Saturday, Paegle won the 100 Yard freestyle for the third straight year with a time of 48.29 and becomes the first girl to win at least three straight state titles in events since Lindsey Benko of Elkhart Central won four straight titles from 1992-1995. Pagele finished with a time 145.19 to win the 200 freestyle and she finishes with 8 State Medals for her career with 4 State Championships and will stay home to compete for Indiana University.
Bloomington South finished 15th with 42 points and Bloomington North Finished 17th with 22 points. Bloomington South Junior Diver Carina Jacobson finished 27th in the 1-meter diving event and Sophomore Alexandria Eakin finished 15th in the 500-yard freestyle. Bloomington North Sophomore Ashley Freel finished 9th in the 100-yard butterfly and 15th in the 100-yard backstroke. Sophomore Hope Westfall finished 12th in the 500-yard freestyle and the 400-yard freestyle relay team finished 14th.
Carmel won a national record 36 straight State Championship with 461 points along with 3 individual and sweeping all 3 relay state titles. It is longest such streak in any sport or gender. Fishers finished 2nd with 283 points. Hamilton Southeastern finished 3rd with 164 points, Concord was 4th with 162 points and Zionsville rounded out the top five with 147 points.
Three Monroe County Wrestlers Advance to State Final
Three Monroe County Wrestlers Advances to The State Wrestling Finals by finishing in the top 4 at Evansville Semi State Saturday held the Ford Center. Bloomington South’s Delaney Ruhlman won the Semi State at 152 Pounds. Cash Turner from Edgewood defeated Evan Roudebush from Bloomington South in the 3rd place match at 138 pounds to both advances as the top four in each weight class advance to the State Finals. The Remaining six Monroe County wrestlers that competed Saturday all loss their opening match and will not go to state. Chase Hostetler who was to compete for Bloomington North at 170 pounds had to withdraw after he broke his ankle in the Regional at Bloomington South the Saturday before. The State Wrestling Finals are this Friday and Saturday at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The First Round will be Friday at 11am and 7pm. On Saturday the Quarterfinals are at 9:30am followed by the consolations at 5pm, and Championships begin at 7:30pm.
