Indiana Men’s Basketball travels to Ohio State
Indiana Men’s Basketball is in action when they take on the Ohio State Buckeyes at 7 pm this evening at Value City Arena in Columbus Ohio. IU is in the midst of a four-game losing streak after falling late against Wisconsin, 64-59 last Tuesday. The Hoosiers and Buckeyes met on Jan. 6 with IU pulling away in the second half for a 67-51 win. The Hoosier defense held the Buckeyes to 30.8% shooting from the field.
Forward Trayce Jackson-Davis is averaging 18.0 points (5th in B1G), 8.3 rebounds (5th), shooting 57.8% from the floor (3rd) and contributing 64 blocked shots (1st). He has had nine double-doubles this season and 31 in his career with IU posting a 23-8 record in those games. He notched four straight double-doubles for the first time in his career after he had 23 points and 12 boards at Nebraska. Jackson-Davis now has scored 1,400 points as a Hoosier, rating 25th all-time in IU lore. Despite being limited to 11 minutes due to foul trouble against No. 4/4 Purdue, he defended a game-winning shot attempt and made two free throws with 5.1 seconds left to extend the IU lead. He had 27 points and 12 rebounds earlier against OSU and had 30 points and eight boards against Wisconsin.
Race Thompson has averaged a team-best 14.2 points and 9.2 rebounds in the last five games and is shooting 36.4% from long distance in that time. He is ranked eighth in the Big Ten in rebounding (7.8). He had 13 points and eight boards against Wisconsin. He had his fifth double-double of the season with 13 points and a career-high 14 rebounds at Michigan State. Recently, he had a season-high 18 points against Penn State and Maryland and added his fourth double-double of the season when he grabbed 12 boards against the Terrapins. He is second on the team averaging 11.7 points and shooting 54.7% from the field with 18 blocked shots. He leads the team with 27 steals. Trey Galloway has started the last three games and is averaging 6.7 points in his last 10 outings. He tied career-highs in minutes (37), points (13), and rebounds (5) at Northwestern.
Ohio State is 16-7 overall and 9-5 in the Big Ten after losing at home to Iowa Saturday afternoon 75-62. Malakai Branham scored 22 points, E.J. Liddell added 15 points, and Kyle Young added 10 points. Former Indiana Hoosier Joey Brunk played 2 minutes and 3 seconds and committed a foul.
Indiana Women’s Basketball falls to Iowa and faces Hawkeyes in rematch tonight
Indiana Women’s Basketball lost to Iowa 96-91 Saturday afternoon in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. These same teams meet tonight at 8 pm in Iowa City on the Big Ten Network. Indiana is 19-5 overall and 11-3 in the Big Ten while Iowa is 17-7 overall and 11-4 in the Big Ten. Iowa led the game start to finish leading 25-11 after the first quarter and 47-29 at halftime. Iowa led 72-49 at the end of the 3rd quarter. The Hoosiers outscored the Hawkeyes 42-25 in the 4th quarter. The 42 points the Hoosiers scored was Big Ten record most points in a quarter eclipsing the old mark of 41, done twice, both last year Maryland, third quarter vs. Arkansas 11/29/20 and Maryland, first quarter vs. Iowa 2/23/21. It is also the most in a fourth quarter in Big Ten history, the previous was 39 points by Penn State vs. Michigan on 1/17/16. Indiana scored 37 points in a quarter against Wisconsin on January 13, 2019.
Indiana shot 16-28 for 57% in the Fourth Quarter. The Hoosiers shot 42% from the field for the game and were 6-21 for 28 % from the point line. Indiana had another great game at the free throw line going 23-26 for 88%. The Hoosiers were led in scoring by Aleska Gulbe with 22 points, Grace Berger added 21, Ali Patberg added 18, Nicole Cardano-Hillary and Chloe Moore-McNeill added 11 points each. Mackenzie Holmes scored 8 points in 23 minutes. Kaitlin Peterson, Kiandra Browne and Grace Waggoner played a combined 4 plus minutes and did not score. The Hoosiers honored Ali Patberg, Nicole Cardano-Hillary, Aleska Gulbe and Grace Waggoner for senior day. Patberg is a 7th year senior after starting her career at Notre Dame and leaving the Irish due to injuries. Cardano-Hillary played three seasons at George Mason leaving there as the school’s all time leading scorer. Gulbe has announced she will not take her fifth year so she can go back to Europe to play professional basketball and Waggoner will graduate with her undergraduate degree from the Kelley School of Business and enter the Masters program. Grace Berger who is another senior announced she will return for her 5th year that everybody was given during the 2020-21 season due COVID-19 Pandemic.
Iowa was led in scoring by Center Monika Czinano with 22 points, McKenna Warnock added 20 points. Catlin Clark who was held to 2 points in the first half finished with 18 points and 12 assists. Kate Martin finished with 13 points and Gabbie Marshall added 10 points. Iowa shot 56% from the field, 10-19 from three-point range for 52%, and 18-24 from the free throw line for 75%.
Bloomington North wins Boys Swimming Sectional
Bloomington North scored 427 points to win the Boys Swimming Sectional at Columbus North Saturday for its 16th Sectional Championship in school history and 3rd straight. Bloomington South was second with 348 points and Edgewood was 9th with 75 points. The Bloomington Schools combined for 6 individual titles and 2 relay titles. Nick Weber of East Central won the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events and the Trojans took home the 200-yard freestyle relay. Dylan Thomas of Milan won the 100-yard breaststroke.
Bloomington North’s Max Miller won the 1-meter diving event, Jay Stewart won the 100-yard backstroke and the Cougars took home the 400-medley relay. Bloomington South Judah Thompson won the 200 yard and the 500-yard freestyle, David Kovacs won the 200-yard Individual Medley Lukas Paegle won the 100-yard butterfly and the Panthers won the 200 Medley Relay.
The State Finals will be held this Friday and Saturday at the Indiana University Natatorium on the IUPUI Campus. The Prelims are Friday at 6 pm. Diving Preliminaries and Semifinals begin at 9 am Saturday. The Diving finals along with the Swimming consolation and championship finals begin at 1 pm.
Bloomington South Wrestler Delaney Rulhman state runner-up
Bloomington South Junior Wrestler Delaney Rulhman finishes state runner up for the second year in row after losing Saturday night to Samuel Goin of Crown Point by decision 4-3 in the 152-pound state championship match in the IHSAA State Wrestling Finals in Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis Saturday night. Rulhman finished his season with a 35-2 record. Rulhman beat Austin Brickley of Carroll Fort Wayne 9-0 in the First Round Friday, beat Anthony Reinhart of Zionsville by fall at the 3:52 mark in the quarterfinals and beat Tyler Jones of Warren Central in Semifinals 16-3. Rulhman lost to Jesse Mendez of Crown Point in 138-pound state final a year ago via fall 1:00 mark.
Rulhman was one of four wrestlers representing Monroe County in the State Finals and was the only one to make it out of the first round. Freshman Cameron Meier 24-9 of Bloomington South lost Nathan Smith by fall at 1:38 mark in the 106 Pounds Weight Class. In the 138-pound weight class Junior Cash Turner 32-2 of Edgewood fell to Cole Solorney of Kankakee Valley 6-0 and Freshman Evan Roudebush of Bloomington South 26-11 fell to Jesse Mendez of Crown Point by Technical Fall at 3:29 mark. Crown Point won the state championship with a score 178 points. It’s the 2nd state title for bulldogs after winning it all in 2009.
