Indiana Men’s Basketball beats Maryland to end five game losing streak
Indiana Men’s Basketball got back to its winning ways Thursday night beating Maryland 74-64 inside Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers snapped a five-game losing streak improving to 17-10 overall and 8-9 in the Big Ten. Xavier Johnson led the way with 24 points. Johnson was a perfect 7-7 from the field, 3-3 from three-point range and 7-8 from the free throw line. Race Thompson added 19 points and 9 rebounds and Trayce Jackson-Davis added 10 points and 5 rebounds. Indiana shot 59% from the field and 72% from the free throw line.
Maryland was led in scoring by Fatts Russell with 23 points, Hakim Hart added 14 points and Donta Scott added 10 points. The Terps hit 10 three pointers in the game and shot 42% from the field. Maryland was 8-11 from the free throw line for 72%. Maryland is 13-15 overall and 5-12 in the Big Ten.
Indiana will travel to Minnesota Sunday evening at 6 pm for a matchup with the Golden Gophers. Minnesota is 13-13 overall and 4-13 in the Big Ten. Indiana beat Minnesota 73-60 in Bloomington on January 9th.
Indiana Women’s Basketball closes out regular season at Maryland
Indiana Women’s Basketball needs to find some momentum heading into next weeks Big Ten Tournament at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis as the Hoosiers travel to Maryland for the regular season finale at 8pm this evening and game will be televised on the Big Ten Network. The Hoosiers are 19-6 overall and 11-4 in the Big Ten Conference. A win would guarantee a double bye in the Big Ten Tournament a loss would give them the 5th seed and would play next Thursday in the quarterfinals. Indiana beat Maryland for the first time in series history on January 2 70-63 in overtime in Bloomington as the Terrapins lead the all-time series 11-1. Indiana is coming off a pair of losses to Iowa Last Saturday at home 96-91 and Monday on the road 88-82.
The Hoosiers are coming off a stretch of seven games in 15 days in the month of February. Junior forward Mackenzie Holmes and senior guard Grace Berger lead the way for Indiana, averaging 16.6 and 16.2 points, respectively. Senior forward Aleksa Gulbe adds 13.1 points per game, as she’s elevated her play in the last eight games. She has scored in double figures in seven of those contests, adding 16.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game while shooting 44.8 percent from the floor and 78.0 percent at the free throw line. Ali Patberg and Nicole Cardano-Hillary are both averaging 11.8 points per game. On the heels of its 20th win of the season, Indiana needs one more victory to notch its 11th 20-win season in school history. It would be the seventh-straight season with 20 wins or more, the longest streak in program history. Head Coach Teri Moren is 167-85 in 8th season at IU and 366-215 in 19 years overall.
Maryland is coming off a 71-59 setback at league-leading Michigan on Sunday afternoon after winning its previous eight games. They are led by sophomore guard/forward Angel Reese who averages 17.6 points and 105. Rebounds per game. The Terps average 79.5 points per game this season and shoot 43.9 percent from the floor. Maryland is 20-7 overall and 12-4 in the Big Ten. Brenda Freese is 532-137 in her 20th season at Maryland and is 589-168 in 23 seasons overall.
Inclement weather wipes out Boys High School Basketball Thursday night
Inclement Weather wiped out the Edgewood-Eastern Greene and Bloomington South-Northview Boys Basketball Games Thursday night so they are scheduled to play those game tonight along with New Albany at Bloomington North in the regular season finale for all the team and all three games will start at 7:30 pm.
Bloomington South is 16-7 while Northview 15-8 and coming off a 63-36 road win at county rival Clay City Wednesday Night. Edgewood is 10-13 on the season while Eastern Greene is 6-15. Bloomington North is 18-3 on the season and has not lost since December 28 at Bedford North Lawrence 48-40. The Cougars have won 11 in a row. New Albany is 11-10 on the season, the Bulldogs average and give up 53.8 points per game.
Four Girls Basketball State Champions to be crowned at Gainbridge Fieldhouse
Four Girls Basketball State Champions will be crowned Tomorrow at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis with the 47th annual IHSAA Girls Basketball State Finals that will be televised on Bally Sports Indiana.
In Class 1A Tecumseh 20-8 will take on Lafayette Central Catholic 24-4 at 10:30 AM. Tecumseh finished 7th in polls and are making its first state finals appearance. Lafayette Central Catholic finished 3rd in the polls is making its 5th state finals appearance and looking for its 4th state title after the Knights won it all in 2006, 2015 and 2016. The 2016 state title was in Class 2A while the other two were in 1A.
In Class 2A Forest Park 25-3 will take on Frankton 23-5 at 12:45 PM. Forest Park finished 8th in the Polls and are making its second state finals appearance. The Rangers lost in the 2A title game in 2000 to Fort Wayne Bishop Luers 62-60. Frankton is making its second state finals appearance after losing to Linton 70-28 in the 2A title game in 2020.
In Class 3A Sliver Creek 26-2 will take on South Bend Washington 26-3 at 6 PM in a rematch of last years Class 3A State Title game in which Sliver Creek won 54-48. Sliver Creek finished 12th in the polls and South Bend Washington 3rd. South Bend Washington is making its 6th state finals appearance and looking to take home is second state title. The Panthers won it all in 2007.
In Class 4A Franklin 28-1 will take on Noblesville 24-4 at 8:15 PM. Franklin is making its 2nd state finals appearance. The Grizzly Cubs lost in the Class 3A state title game in 1998. Noblesville is making its 5th state finals appearance. The Lady Millers won it all in 1987 and were runners up in 1988. They also made state finals in 1989 and 1990 under the one class format. Senior Ashlyn Traylor who moved in from Martinsville this summer leads Franklin scoring at 17.1 points per game. University Of Connecticut commit Ashlynn Shade is a junior who leads Noblesville in scoring at 20.5 points per game. Former Indiana University Women’s Basketball Jenn Anderson is an assistant coach for Noblesville. Anderson played at IU from 2013-17 and was 2013 Indiana All Star from Westfield High School.
