Bloomington’s Irish Lion to celebrate 40th Anniversary
It’s a big year for The Irish Lion. 2022 marks the 40th anniversary for the locally owned restaurant and pub, which has been a Bloomington tradition for generations of residents, visitors, and Indiana University students, faculty, and alumni. Coinciding with this celebration, the 80-year-old proprietor—after 45 years in the restaurant business—will ease into a planned retirement in 2023. The search begins for a successor as long-term management and staff remain to ensure a smooth transition and to carry on its trademark dishes and traditions.

Hoping to replicate the same public-house experience of the traditional pubs in Ireland, in 1979 an extensive restoration took place of The Irish Lion’s historic downtown brick tavern, originally designed in 1882 as a pub and inn with cast-iron columns and stained-glass windows. Reminiscent of Victorian pubs in the old country, it was an ideal setting for an Irish restaurant and pub where friends and family gather for traditional Irish fare, a pint and friendly conversation.
