
Former IUMBB standout Juwan Morgan signs with Boston Celtics
Former Indiana standout Juwan Morgan inked a 10-day contract with the Boston Celtics, the team announced on Monday afternoon. Morgan has appeared in 51 NBA games in his three-year NBA career with the Utah Jazz (2019-21) and the Toronto Raptors (2021-22). Most recently, Morgan appeared in 29 games with the Maine Celtics, Boston’s G-League affiliate, including 19 starts. He is averaging 12.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.1 assists. He has also charted nearly a steal and a block per game for the Celtics. Morgan is shooting 51.0% from the field and 34.2% from the 3-point line.
During his four-year stint with the Hoosiers, Morgan accumulated 1,374 career points to rank 25th in IU scoring lore. He is 10th in program history in career rebounds with 757 and eighth in blocked shots at 138 for his career. Morgan was twice named to the All-Big Ten team. He was a second-team selection following his junior season and a third-team honoree the following season.
Indiana University Softball’s Brianna Copeland named Big Ten Freshman of the Week
For the second time this season, pitcher/infielder Brianna Copeland has earned the Big Ten Freshman of the Week Award, the conference announced Monday. Copeland, a native of Pelham, Ala., hit .500 with five hits, one double, two home runs, six RBI and a 1.200 slugging percentage in the weekend series at Ohio State. Copeland also pitched 4.2 innings with a 1.50 ERA.
In the Hoosiers 17-5 over Ohio State on March 25, Copeland hit two home runs and recorded six RBI’s. For the season Copeland is hitting .390 with 16 hits and four home runs. Copeland and the Hoosiers host Kent State tomorrow and travel to Wisconsin for a weekend series with the Badgers.
Indiana Football lands commitment from Greensburg HS Tight End Sam West for 2023
Indiana has landed a commitment from Greensburg (Ind) 2023 tight end prospect Sam West. West held offers from programs such as Iowa State, Rutgers, Purdue, Tennessee and more. The 6-foot-5, 205-pound in-state standout was recently an Alabama baseball commit but has since focused solely on football and has seen the offers pour in.
West visited Indiana multiple times in the winter and spring and made his pledge to Indiana on Saturday afternoon. The Greensburg native is a three-star recruit ranked as the #13 overall player in the state. West plays quarterback in high school but will be a tight end for Indiana. On his recent junior day visit, he was able to meet with new offensive coordinator Walt Bell and learn more about the system in place. He also learned more from tight ends coach Kevin Wright on how they will continue to use tight ends.
West said that Indiana Head Coach Tom Allen made sure that he knew how big of a priority he was for Indiana, especially at the position. West joins four-star Cornerback Daeh McCullough of Bloomington South as the two commitments in the class of 2023 for Indiana.
Four Boys State Basketball Champions crowned Saturday
The Boys State Basketball Finals is the end of the sports season every year in the state of Indiana as four state champions were crowned at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Saturday.
In Class 1A North Daviess beat Lafayette Central Catholic 50-48 in 2 overtimes for the first state title for North Daviess and the first two overtime game since Princeton beat Rochester in the 2009 Class 3A State title game. Clark Barrett missed the second of three free throw attempts with no time left after being fouled on a three point shot.
In Class 2A Providence beat Central Noble 62-49. Providence won its first state title after came out red hot leading 25-9 after the first quarter going 10-14 from the floor for 71% and 4-5 from three-point range. Central Noble was led by Wisconsin Connor Essegian scoring 18 points and finishes is 10th all-time leading scorer in Indiana Boys High School Basketball History with 2,508 points.
In Class 3A Beech Grove beat Mishawaka Marian 53-43. Beech Grove wins its first state title and dedicates it to its former coach Matt English who died in December of 2018 of Brain Cancer. Mike Renfro who is Beech Grove’s all time leading scorer took over the program and accomplished the goal that English envisioned for this program to bring home a state title. Anthony Ball had 17 points and 20 rebounds to lead Beech Grove and Jeremiah Tate set and all-time state finals record with 9 steals.
In Class 4A Indianapolis Cathedral dominated previously unbeaten Chesterton 63-31 to win its first Class 4A State Title and second overall. The Irish won the 1998 Class 3A State Championship. Cathedral had state finals record 14 blocks and had several dunks in the dominating victory. Cathedral Head Coach Jason Delaney becomes the first ever coach to lead three different schools to State championship. Delaney led Waldron to the Class 1A title in 2004 and Indianapolis Tech to the Class 4A title in 2014. Chesterton was looking to become the first school in Warren Central won the Class 4A title in 2018 to go unbeaten.
