Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame announces 2022 scholarship winners
The Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame has announced its six annual scholarship winners. Representing Bloomington High School South are Kristina Paegle and David Nussbaum. From North are Kyle Kante and Reece Lozano. Edgewood recipients are Carly Sherfield and Zack Raake.

Paegle was the Herald-Times Swimmer of the Year all four years of her high school career, which included four state titles and eight medals overall. She is an Olympic Trials and FINA World Cup qualifier and has an athletic scholarship from Indiana University. Nussbaum, an offensive lineman, was Academic All-State in football, and will continue his career at Wheaton College with the help of the Wheaton College Presidential Scholarship.

Kante was an All-Area standout in volleyball and track. She just wrapped up her track career by medaling at state in the 100 hurdles. She was also four-time All-Area in volleyball. She will compete in track at IUPUI. Lozano also was a two-sport star. A quarterback on the Cougar football team, he finished as the school’s all-time leader in total yardage, earning All-State honors from the Indiana Football Coaches Association. In track, he was the sectional and regional champion in the 200-meter dash. He is an invited walk-on for the IU football team.

Sherfield is the second of two Sherfields to receive a scholarship from the Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame, joining her sister Erin (2016). Sherfield was the H-T Player of the Year is girls’ basketball, and also made All-Conference in soccer. She will study sports and fitness administration at Ivy Tech. Raake was All-Area and All-Conference in soccer and track. He finished his career on a high note by qualifying for state in the 100-meter dash. He set the school record in the 100 with a 10.79 and won the 100 at the sectional and conference meets. A member of the National Honor Society, he will attend the Colorado School of the Mines.

Each year since 2011, the Monroe County Sports Hall of Fame has handed out scholarships to one male and one female athlete from each of the county’s three public high schools, an amount now reaching $60,000.

Bloomington North Graduate Logan Calvin finishes 6th In shot put at NCAA Championships for Illinois State
llinois State Redshirt Senior Thrower and Bloomington North Graduate Logan Calvin earned First Team All-America honors in the shot put at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon becoming the second Redbird in school history to earn First Team honors in the men’s shot put. With a sixth-place finish, Calvin also becomes the highest finisher in school history in the men’s shot put at an NCAA meet. On his second throw of the night, Calvin tossed his best mark of the meet at 19.83m (65-3.25). The throw moved him into fifth overall, as he earned three more attempts. Five of Calvin’s six throws were above 19 meters, as he finished the NCAA meet in sixth place. Calvin finished eighth at the NCAA West Preliminary Round with a throw of 19.63m (64-5) to punch his ticket to Eugene and made his first appearance at an NCAA Championship meet.

Indiana University Track & Field opened their time at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships with the men’s hammer throw. Sean Mockler represented the Hoosiers in the men’s hammer throw where he placed 16th overall. Mockler threw a mark of 67.20m (220′ 6″) to earn All-American Second Team accolades. The meet will continue through Saturday.

Indy Fuel Hockey Team announce 2022-23 regular season schedule
In conjunction with the ECHL, the Indy Fuel, proud ECHL affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Chicago Blackhawks and the American Hockey League’s Rockford IceHogs, unveiled their full 72-game schedule for the 2022–23 campaign. The Fuel will open their ninth season at home on Oct. 21 against their I-69 rival, the Fort Wayne Komets. The regular season will close on April 16, 2023.  Indy will play 36 home games at Indiana Farmers Coliseum and visit opponents in nine cities during their 36 games on the road. The Fuel will play 22 of their first 37 games on the road. That includes an 8-day stretch from Nov. 27 to Dec. 4 during which they will play single games versus the Kalamazoo Wings and the Wichita Thunder, and three games in four days versus the Tulsa Oilers.  Following the All-Star break, the Fuel will shift to a home-heavy schedule in which 21 of their remaining 35 games will be at home. The team will play six home games during a 15-day homestand – the longest of the season – from March 17th-31st.

Sixty of Indy’s 72 games will be played against familiar Central Division rivals. The Fuel will play 11 games versus the Fort Wayne Komets (five home), 15 versus the Kalamazoo Wings (seven home), 10 against the Cincinnati Cyclones (five home), seven against the Wheeling Nailers (five home), 11 versus the Iowa Heartlanders (five home), and six versus the Toledo Walleye (three home). In addition to their heavy Central schedule, the Fuel will play 12 games against six opponents from the remaining divisions. That includes road games against the Reading Royals (2), the Tulsa Oilers (3), and the Wichita Thunder (1), and home games versus the Kansas City Mavericks (3), the Jacksonville Icemen (2) and the Greenville Swamp Rabbits (1).

In keeping with previous seasons, the Fuel will be busiest on the weekends with 61 of 72 games falling on Friday, Saturday or Sunday and only 11 games falling on weekdays. Indy will play three games in three days on 12 different occasions, with only one of those 3-game stretches on home ice. All home games Monday through Saturday are slated for a 7 p.m. puck drop, while Sunday games will start at 3 p.m. The only exceptions are 5 p.m. games on Sunday, Nov. 20, and Sunday, April 2, and a 10:30 a.m. game on Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Indiana Fever lose at Connecticut Sun
The Indiana Fever fell short against the Connecticut Sun for the third time this season in an 88-69 loss at the Mohegan Sun Arena on Wednesday night. Connecticut becomes the first eastern conference team to reach 10 wins this season, while Indiana sits at 3-11 heading into tonight’s home game with the New York Liberty at 7 pm and will be broadcast on Bally Sports Indiana.

Fever rookie forward NaLyssa Smith led all scorers with a career-high 19 points on a career-high eight made field goals. Smith has now scored at least 10 points in eight out of the 10 games she has played this season. Fever guard Danielle Robinson and center Queen Egbo also reached double digits in points with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Both teams struggled from beyond the arc, but Connecticut was still able to shoot 53 percent on two-point field goals. In a battle of two of the three top offensive rebounding teams entering Wednesday night, the Fever struggled to keep the Sun off the glass as Indiana was outrebounded 41-29 in the third of four meetings between the two teams.

Fever guard Kelsey Mitchell, who entered the game third in the WNBA in points per game, finished with nine points and five assists. This is only the third game this season Mitchell has not reached 10 points. Wednesday also marked Mitchell’s 136th consecutive game played, putting her two games shy of tying the franchise record held by Tamika Catchings at 138. Connecticut had five players in double figures, led by an 18-point, nine-rebound performance by forward Brionna Jones. Forward Jonquel Jones added 16 points and nine rebounds, while forward Alyssa Thomas finished with 11 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Indians Win on Walk Off Against Columbus

The Indianapolis Indians beat the Columbus Clippers 6-5 Thursday night at Victory Field in Downtown Indianapolis. The Indians scored with 2 outs in the bottom of the ninth inning on a walk off steal to home by Jared Olivia. Will Brennan scored in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 5-5. The Clippers opening the scoring in the top of the first before the Indians scored 4 runs in the bottom the 3rd. Columbus would score two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Oneil Cruz would hit a home run in the bottom of the seventh before the Clippers would add another in the eighth inning. Indianapolis improves 28-27 while Columbus falls to 34-23 on the season. The teams will finish up this series this weekend. Tonight, and tomorrow’s games scheduled for 7:05 pm and Sunday’s game will start 1:35pm.
