Indianapolis Indians Coverage

Indians Drop Two in Columbus
The Indianapolis Indians lost to the Columbus Clippers 8-3 Wednesday Night and 7-0 Thursday Afternoon at Huntington Park in Columbus Ohio. In Wednesday Night’s Game Rodolfo Castro hit a tape-measure solo home run in the opening frame, but the Columbus Clippers used a five-run bottom of the first to take the lead and not look back. Castro’s ninth blast of the season sailed to deep right and out of the ballpark, but it was quickly overshadowed by Columbus’ first inning burst against Miguel Yajure. Richie Palacios tied the game with a run-scoring triple and touched home on a Will Brennan single that put the Clippers on top, 2-1. Yajure (L, 2-2) then issued his second walk of the inning ahead of a deep flyout that put runners at second and third base with two down, and Trenton Brooks clubbed an 0-2 pitch off the scoreboard in right for a three-run homer. Columbus’ success against Yajure continued in the third inning. With one away, the Clippers strung together two singles and a walk to knock the right-hander out of the game, and Brooks greeted Travis MacGregor from the bullpen with a ground-rule double to plate two runs. Yajure was charged with seven earned runs in just 2.1 innings pitched. After Indianapolis went quietly in its half of the fourth inning, the game entered a rain delay that lasted 1 hour and 12 minutes. Bligh Madris finished with two hits and drove in the Indians’ second run with a fourth-inning single. Indy’s third run came in the seventh thanks to consecutive singles by Hoy Park and Mason Martin that preceded a passed ball. Enright (W, 2-0) recorded five strikeouts in 2.0 shutout innings after the rain delay. Will Benson belted his 15th home run of the season for the Clippers in the sixth off Matt Eckelman.
Despite starting pitcher Jerad Eickhoff throwing 6.0 two-run innings, Thursday afternoon’s game was all Columbus. In the bottom of the third, Will Benson smacked a leadoff home run over the right-center fence to give Columbus (49-38) a 1-0 lead. The Clippers would lead for the remainder of the ballgame, and tacked on insurance with a home run by Richie Palacios in the sixth and burst for five more runs in the seventh. RHP Peyton Battenfield (W, 6-5) tossed 8.0 shutout innings with six strikeouts. He threw 5.1 perfect innings before Jared Oliva ripped a single up-the-middle to give the Indians (41-44) their first baserunner of the contest. Oliva was erased in the following at bat when Jamie Ritchie grounded into a double play. Eickhoff (L, 5-4) deposited his second consecutive quality start for the Indians. In 6.0 innings of work, he allowed two runs on three hits – two of which were solo home runs. The Indians and Clippers continue their six-game series on tonight and Saturday at 7:05pm at Huntington Park and will play the sixth and final game of the series at 4:05pm Sunday afternoon.
