Indiana University Football Player Shaun Shivers preseason candidate for Doak Walker Award
Indiana senior running back Shaun Shivers has been named a preseason candidate for the Doak Walker Award, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced on Wednesday. The Forum annually presents the award to the nation’s top college running back.
A transfer student-athlete from Auburn, Shivers joined the program for spring practice after appearing in 49 games with nine starts in four seasons on The Plains. The Fort Lauderdale, Florida, native enters his first season with the Hoosiers as a 1,000-yard rusher in his career with eight rushing scores. He owns 38 career receptions for 211 yards and has served as a return specialist in his career, as well.

The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name ten semifinalists in November, and three finalists, as voted on by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee, will be announced in November. The committee will cast a second vote in December to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of past recipients, former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives. The recipient of the 2021 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards.
 
The award is named for SMU’s three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.  
Honoring the legends of sports for 33 years, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum celebrates outstanding success in athletics. Based in Dallas, the series features major figures from a variety of sports. The PwC SMU Athletic Forum includes four luncheons and the prestigious Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet. The Doak Walker Award is a member of the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA), which encompasses the most prestigious awards in college football. Founded in 1997, the NCFAA and its 25 awards now boast over 800 recipients, dating to 1935. Visit ncfaa.org and @NCFAA on Twitter to learn more about the association. The members of the NCFAA are unveiling their preseason watch lists over a 12-day period this month. Fourteen of the association’s 25 awards select a preseason watch list and the NCFAA has spearheaded a coordinated effort to promote each award’s preseason candidates.

Former Indiana University Men’s Basketball player Yogi Ferrell resigns with Slovenian Team
Indiana’s all-time assist leader is going to give it another go in Slovenia. Point guard Yogi Ferrell has re-signed with Cedevita Olimpija, a top Slovenian team he joined midseason in 2021. The 29-year-old Ferrell averaged 15.3 points, 2.6 rebounds, and 4.7 assists, over 15 EuroCup games last season. Ferrell arrived in Cedevita after a brief stint with Panathinaikos OPAP Athens where he started the 2021-22 season.  Last season was his first experience playing overseas.

The 6-foot Ferrell won a pair of Big Ten titles (2013, 2016) at IU in connection with his freshman and senior seasons. He is Indiana’s all-time assist leader and first in three-pointers made in Big Ten games. Ferrell played in more games (137) at IU than anyone else. Ferrell went undrafted in 2016 but played in the NBA for five seasons with five different teams.  He appeared in 259 games and averaged 7.7 points, 2.3 assists and 2.1 rebounds in 20.1 minutes per game while shooting 42 percent from the field.

IUFB QB Jack Tuttle becomes nominee for 2022 Good Works Team
Indiana football redshirt-senior Jack Tuttle has been nominated for the 2022 American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Good Works Team, which honors 22 leaders and community champions from around college football’s five subdivisions. Tuttle was among the nominees for the Wuerffel Trophy in 2021 and has been a part of numerous initiatives in both the Bloomington area and around the country. He worked with the Red Cross this year on disaster relief and blood drives, while also donating plasma and blood himself. A volunteer at the Tim Tebow “Night to Shine,” the San Marcos, California, native has also worked with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes on multiple initiatives, volunteered at Riley Children’s Hospital, teamed up with the 2nd & 7 Foundation, and handed out water in the community to homeless. A 2001 IU graduate with his degree in supply chain management, Tuttle is working towards his MBA in management and is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection. Two separate injuries limited Tuttle to six games in 2021 – including two starts – as he threw for 423 yards and five touchdowns. Established in 1992, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team is one of the most coveted community service awards in college football.

Former Indiana Hoosier Baseball Player Kyle Schwarber Plays in MLB All Star Game
Former Indiana Hoosier Baseball Player Kyle Schwarber went 0-2 at the plate as the American League beat the National League 3-2 in the Major League Baseball All Star Game Tuesday Night at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles Cailfornia. Schwarber who was making his 2nd all-star appearance in his career got his first taste of action after missing the game last year due to injury. Schwarber plays for the Philadelphia Phillies played Left Field in the top of the 6th inning. through the top of the ninth inning. He grounded out to the Shortstop in the bottom of the 7th inning and struck out in the Bottom of the 9th inning. The Phillies host the Chicago Cubs tomorrow night at 7:05pm

Indiana Fever fall to Los Angeles Sparks
Indiana Fever guard Tiffany Mitchell has notched three games scoring in double figures in her last five outings. The seventh-year guard came off the bench in Tuesday’s 86-79 loss at the Los Angeles Sparks to finish with a season-best 22 points on a career-high nine made field goals. Mitchell scored 16 points in the first half as well to tie her best first-half point total in her career. Tuesday’s loss dropped the Fever to 5-23, while LA improved to 11-14 after taking two of three regular season matchups against the Fever.

Neither team owned a lead larger than six through the first three quarters on Tuesday night at Crypto.com Arena and was tied 68-68 with 8:09 remaining in the game. Los Angeles put together a 10-0 run over the next 3:48 to eventually solidify the victory. Fever forward NaLyssa Smith added 14 points, five rebounds and four assists in a team-high 32:04 of action. Tuesday was Smith’s 17th game this season scoring in double figures. Kelsey Mitchell added 12 points and tied a team-high five assists. 

Emma Cannon came off the bench to pitch in 10 points for her fourth game this season scoring in double figures. Indiana reserves outscored the shorthanded Sparks bench, 34-17. Los Angeles was paced and guided by Nneka Ogwumike’s season-high 35 points on 12-of-20 shooting and 9-of-11 free throw shooting clip. Jordin Canada added 11 points and a game-high eight assists, while Chiney Ogwumike was inserted into the starting lineup to finish with eight points and 10 rebounds.  The Fever conclude the road trip tonight at 10 p.m. ET at the Las Vegas Aces and the game will be streamed on the official Indiana Fever Facebook page and broadcast on NBA TV.
