Inflation relief on way to Hoosier taxpayers
Hoosiers should be on the lookout for an additional automatic taxpayer refund thanks to a new law supported by State Reps. Bob Behning (R-Indianapolis) and Mike Speedy (R-Indianapolis). Individual filers will receive $200, or $400 for a married couple filing jointly. Behning said unlike Washington, D.C., Indiana is responsibly using the state’s surplus, which experienced higher-than-anticipated revenue collections, to return $1 billion to taxpayers. According to the Indiana Department of Revenue, direct deposits along with mailed checks will be sent out to Hoosiers starting mid-August. The Indiana auditor’s office can print 50,000 checks per day and is aiming to have all checks printed by early October. Hoosiers should allow until Nov. 1, 2022, to receive their refund.

The $200 automatic taxpayer refund is separate from the $125 refund issued earlier this year. The state will issue a combined check for both refunds to taxpayers who were eligible for and have not yet received the initial $125 refund by direct deposit. Hoosiers on Social Security who did not qualify for the $125 taxpayer refund because they did not have to file a state tax return can still qualify for the $200 refund, if they file their tax return in the calendar year 2023. 12 Big Ten alums set to compete in 2022 WNBA Playoffs
Seven conference schools represented as postseason play tips off Wednesday with first-round best-of-three series

The Big Ten Conference will be well-represented when the 2022 WNBA Playoffs open Wednesday night, as 12 alums from seven conference schools tip off postseason play this week. There will be at least one Big Ten player on seven of this year’s eight WNBA playoff teams (all but the top-seeded Las Vegas Aces), including multiple alums on four squads.

Maryland has a conference-high four alums in this year’s WNBA Playoffs, with two each on the Connecticut Sun (Brionna Jones and Alyssa Thomas) and the Washington Mystics (Tianna Hawkins and Shatori Walker-Kimbrough). Rutgers has three alums in the postseason, led by last year’s WNBA Finals MVP, Kahleah Copper of the defending champion Chicago Sky. She will be joined by former Scarlet Knight standouts Betnijah Laney (New York Liberty) and Epiphanny Prince (Seattle Storm).

Two former Big Ten Players of the Year will also compete in the 2022 WNBA Playoffs. The conference’s lone four-time honoree Jantel Lavender (2008-11 at Ohio State) will suit up for the Seattle Storm, while two-time recipient Megan Gustafson (2018-19 at Iowa) is slated to do likewise for the Phoenix Mercury.

Rounding out the Big Ten’s playoff contingent are two rookies who were selected in last spring’s WNBA Draft — Michigan State’s Nia Clouden (now with the Connecticut Sun) and Northwestern’s Veronica Burton (playing for the Dallas Wings) — as well as former Nebraska great Yvonne Turner, who recently signed with the Phoenix Mercury.

The WNBA Playoffs open with the following best-of-three first-round series in a seeded, bracket-style format:

  • No. 1 Las Vegas Aces vs. No. 8 Phoenix Mercury (Game 1 – Wednesday, 10 p.m. ET on ESPN)
  • No. 4 Seattle Storm vs. No. 5 Washington Mystics (Game 1 – Thursday, 10 p.m. ET on ESPN2)
  • No. 2 Chicago Sky vs. No. 7 New York Liberty (Game 1 – Wednesday, 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2)
  • No. 3 Connecticut Sun vs. No. 6 Dallas Wings (Game 1 – Thursday, 8 p.m. ET on ESPNU/NBA TV)
