Indiana University Women’s Soccer hosts Ball State
The Indiana women’s soccer team (0-0-2) will open the home slate of the program’s 30th season with an in-state matchup against Ball State (0-1-1). Due to poor game field conditions on Yeagley Field Bill Armstong Stadium, Indiana’s home opener against Ball State has been moved to the practice field. First kick has also been moved to 6 pm instead of 8 pm. The match will be streamed on BTN+ with Samantha Condra (PxP) and Austin Platt (Analyst) on the call. Anna Winterhalder will handle the sideline reporting duties. Live stats of the match can be tracked on IUHoosiers.com.

Indiana played to a nil-nil draw for the second-straight match at Virginia Tech at Thompson Field in Blacksburg, Va., on Aug. 21. Sophomore keeper Jamie Gerstenberg notched a career-best eight saves across the 90-minute shutout of the Hokies. The match marked the first career start for freshman Olivia Rush. Junior defender Alania Kalin made her 50th career start. Senior defender Karlee Luker made her season debut with a first-half substitution for her 20th-career appearance for Indiana. Sophomore defender Camile Hamm recorded her 15th career start in 20 appearances. Redshirt freshman midfielder Ava Akeel made her first career appearance.

The two sides have met three times on the pitch with the series split evenly, 1-1-1. All three of the previous matchups have been contested in Bloomington. In the most recent addition of the in-state rivalry, the teams were all square at 1-1 after 110 minutes of play. IU holds a record of 19-3-2 all time against teams currently in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). The Hoosiers have converted three-straight positive results against the conference dating back to a 4-0 win over Western Michigan on Aug. 27, 2017.

The Ball State Cardinals, led by fourth-year head coach Josh Rife, enter the matchup off a scoreless opening weekend. BSU fell to the University of Kentucky (3-0) on the road before earning a 0-0 draw at Queens in Charlotte. Rife played two seasons for the Indiana men’s soccer program under legendary head coach Jerry Yeagley. During his career, IU went to back-to-back College Cups and the 2001 Big Ten Conference title. His teams combined for 34-11-1. Fifth-year midfielder Jenna Dombrowski is the team’s active leader in career goals (6), career assists (5), career points (17) and career shots on goal (33). She has started 40-of-56 career matches played. Sophomore forward Lexi Fraley is coming off a season in which she was named to the MAC All-Freshman Team. The Harrison, Ind., native scored four goals in 16 appearances in her debut season. Sophomore Bethany Moser tends goal for the Cardinals and has surrendered three tallies (1.53 goals against average) in 176 minutes in net. Moser has made 11 saves (0.786 save percentage) on the 28 shots faced.

Indianapolis Indians Coverage

Indians Beat Rochester for Fourth Straight Win

Behind Osvaldo Bido’s first Triple-A quality start and a tie-breaking, eighth-inning solo blast by Cal Mitchell, the Indianapolis Indians bested the Rochester Red Wings for their fourth consecutive victory on Tuesday night, 3-2. The lone blemish on Bido’s season-high 6.0-inning line came via a solo home run off the bat of Nick Banks in the second inning to give Rochester (53-65) an early lead. He struck out four of his next five batters and, following a one-out double by former Indian John Nogowski in the fourth, caught Daniel Johnson looking to end the frame. He finished with seven strikeouts, one shy of his season-high, and it was his first quality start since spinning 7.0 two-hit, shutout innings on Aug. 26, 2021 with Double-A Altoona vs. Richmond.

The Indians (59-57) backed their starting pitcher with a pair of runs in the sixth. After Drew Maggi led off the inning with a single, he reached second on a fielders’ choice put into play by Hoy Park and raced off to third safely as Rochester left the bag open. With the bases juiced, Mitchell lined a single into right field to score one, and a bases-loaded walk to Diego Castillo put Indy ahead, 2-1. With Bido out of the game, the Red Wins knotted the game at 2-2 with a two-out, solo home run off the bat of Taylor Gushue in the seventh. Mitchell then launched his eighth home run with Indianapolis this season one inning later off Curtis Taylor (L, 1-1) to score the game-winning run. Austin Brice (W, 3-3) and Eric Hanhold (S, 9) combined to hold Rochester without a hit in the final two innings of the game. Hanhold’s ninth save in 10 opportunities marks a career high for the right-hander. Indianapolis’ four-game winning streak is its longest since the team won a season-high five consecutive games from April 8-13.
