Indianapolis Colts end preseason with win over Tampa Bay
The Indianapolis Colts ended the preseason with a 27-10 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Saturday Night at Lucas Oil Stadium. Indy played most of its starters about one quarter and Matt Ryan, the 2016 MVP with Atlanta, led the Colts to the go-ahead score a 1-yard TD run by Deon Jackson on his final series before taking a seat in his first home appearance at Lucas Oil Stadium. Phillip Lindsay’s 2-yard run gave Indy a 14-10 halftime lead and Sam Ehlinger’s nifty 45-yard TD run on the second play of the second half helped the Colts pull away as Brady and Ryan started contemplating the more challenging and meaningful matchups that now loom. Indianapolis opens the Season at Houston on September 11, while Tampa Bay travels to Dallas that same day.
Five days after ending a planned, 11-day training camp break, Tampa Bay Quarterback Tom Brady went 6 of 8 for 44 yards in the no-huddle offense and led the Buccaneers to a field goal on his first and only drive. First-year coach Todd Bowles wanted to give the seven-time Super Bowl Champ and three-time MVP Brady about 10 snaps. As usual, Brady surpassed expectations by running an 11-play, 66-yard drive almost flawlessly. He even converted a fourth down on the series, which had just one hiccup: settling for a 30-yard field goal. Receivers Mike Evans and Julio Jones and running back Leonard Fournette all played, though they, like Brady, watched the final 55 minutes from the sideline. Tampa Bay retook the lead on Ke’Shawn Vaughn’s 1-yard TD run. Without Brady, though, the Bucs didn’t stay in front.
Indiana University Men’s Soccer falls to top-ranked Clemson
Indiana University men’s soccer battled back from down 2-1 to equalize, but the No. 8-ranked Hoosiers fell, 3-2, to the No. 1-ranked Clemson Tigers Friday night on Riggs Field in a nationally televised game on ESPNU.
“I told them to hold their heads high tonight,” IU head men’s soccer coach Todd Yeagley said after the game. “They did a lot of really good things tonight in a tough environment to start the year, and we’re still a young team […] trying to figure out what [are] the best combinations. The great news is that we have unbelievable opponents every game. It’s not like this is our one chance to beat a top-five team.” “I know everyone in the stadium, although disappointed that we didn’t win, that [was] here for IU, there’s no doubt they left going, ‘That team gave everything they had and did some really good things.’”
In the sixth minute Sophomore forward, Samuel Sarver broke open the scoring fest just six minutes in. With relentless pressure, Sarver took advantage of a bad touch by Clemson goalkeeper Trevor Manion, dispossessing him before tucking a cool finish past. Six minutes later, the Tigers equalized. Junior midfielder Ousmane Sylla turned in a fabulous solo effort, finding short space between IU center backs Joey Maher and Daniel Munie to tuck a shot past junior keeper JT Harms. Clemson used its momentum to take its first lead after 16 minutes with another show of solo skill. Senior forward Mohamed Seye dribbled past a midfielder into open space in front of the 18-yard box, and an outside of the foot effort got around Harms at the far post. Redshirt senior forward Ryan Wittenbrink had two great opportunities within two minutes. His first, a 27th-minute free kick from 24 yards out, went high. Two minutes later, Wittenbrink cut in from the left wing, earned himself space, and fired but had his attempt saved by Manion. A hectic sequence in the final moments of the first half could have easily ended in a goal for either team. In the 44th minute, Nate Ward cleverly got in behind into a one-on-one. His shot came off the keeper, but Ward went down in the box, begging for a call. The Tigers countered end-to-end, forcing Harms off his line to save. The save came to the top of the box, where a shot was well-blocked by Bebej. IU came down the field again and found Mihalic in behind, but the sophomore forced his shot wide.
In the Second Half Sophomore forward Tommy Mihalic earned a penalty after being take down in the box. Wittenbrink stepped to the spot, fired into the top corner and tied the match at 2-2. Three minutes after the equalizer, the Hoosiers almost went up again as Sarver had a free header from a set piece and put it on goal, but Manion was up to the task again. Harms made another big save to keep the match tied in the 63rd minute, keeping out a one-on-one attempt by Clemson senior forward Isaiah Reid. After end-to-end play, Sylla put Clemson ahead with a rocket brace past Harms. Sarver nearly had a late equalizer as the ball fell to him from a corner. Sarver stung one to the right post, but Manion came up with another fine save.
Indiana suffered its first loss to Clemson since 1987, a span of six undefeated matches (5-0-1) before this match. Four Hoosiers made their IU debuts Friday night: junior goalkeeper JT Harms, senior forward Karsen Henderlong, freshman forward Luka Bezerra and sophomore midfielder Seth Stewart. IU’s opening day record fell to 30-13-7 all-time. Indiana will get another crack at top opponents next week as the Hoosiers host four consecutive home matches versus NCAA Tournament teams. The homestand kicks off tomorrow night at 8pm when IU takes on Portland.
Indy Eleven Men’s Soccer team beats San Antonio 1-0
Indy Eleven shrugged off a 12-match winless streak by taking down the USL Championship’s top side, San Antonio FC, 1-0 in front of a season-best crowd of 10,081 at IUPUI Carroll Stadium Saturday Night. Robby Dambrot’s first goal for the Boys in Blue late in the first half was all Indiana’s Team needed, thanks in part to goalkeeper Tim Trilk’s first clean sheet for the Boys in Blue and a stout defensive effort all across the field. The match began as a stingy affair, with neither team allowing as much as a shot over the opening ten minutes of action. The lone moment of note from that stretch was an early injury to Eleven defender A.J. Cochran, who had to be replaced after only nine minutes by Jesus Vazquez.
When the shots did start to come, they were from the visitors, but Trilk was on the spot to stop chances from distance that posed little threat through the half hour mark. The Eleven netminder’s best effort of the evening came in the 37th minute, when he reacted quickly to leap backwards and tip Elliot Collier’s header off a corner kick over the crossbar. Just two minutes later Dambrot put the Boys in Blue in front on a stellar individual effort, which started when he put in a hearty slide tackle to win a 50-50 challenge on Juan Tejada’s ball up the left channel. From there, Dambrot danced into the six and cut back past another defender before deftly chipping past a third defender and goalkeeper Jordan Farr inside the far post, the breathtaking play catching SAFC off guard and putting Indy up front. The Eleven had one more look to double the advantage in first half stoppage time, but Raul Aguilera’s near-angle effort was turned away by Farr, who made his Indy homecoming after spending the last four seasons in the Circle City.
The second half was a more ragged affair, with substitutions and injury stoppages regularly slowing down the play. Samuel Adeniran’s 62nd minute blast that forced another save out of Trilk brought the stanza to life, and just 45 seconds later Indy midfielder Bryam Rebellon had a go from distance himself, missing the left post by a hair. Adeniran’s deflected effort in the 71st minute that bounced harmlessly to Trilk was really the last threatening look for San Antonio, as Indy Eleven expertly saw out the rest of regulation and an agonizing 10 minutes of added time to claim the win. The victory was the Eleven’s first since a 4-3 triumph at Charleston Battery on June 4, snapping a 12-game winless streak that was the longest in its USL Championship tenure and tied for the longest in club history. The triumph also marked Indy’s first win at home since May 21 against New York Red Bulls II (2-0), breaking a six-game winless run at Carroll Stadium (0-5-1) that came on the heels of an eight-game home undefeated streak.
After taking down the Western Conference leader tonight, Indy Eleven gets another hack at a USL Championship Goliath this Wednesday when it welcomes its archrival and the current Eastern Conference top squad, Louisville City FC, to “The Mike” for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
