Indianapolis Colts open regular season at Houston Texans
The Indianapolis Colts open the 2022 NFL season Sunday afternoon when they travel to Houston to face the Texans at 1 pm on CBS. The Colts missed the playoffs a season ago after losing in the final two weeks of the regular season to Las Vegas and Jacksonville. The team traded away Quarterback Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders and traded for Matt Ryan from the Atlanta Falcons. Ryan has played for Atlanta for 14 years starting 222 games but on Sunday it will be with a new team. Running Back Jonathan Taylor led the NFL with 1,811 yards and 18 touchdowns last season. Taylor had 2 receiving touchdowns for a total of 20 which tied Los Angeles Chargers Running Back Austin Ekler for the league high.

Indy’s defense was second in takeaways last season and ninth in points allowed. The Colts’ offseason additions could help them play even better this season. New defensive coordinator Gus Bradley inherited three Pro Bowlers defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, linebacker Shaquille Leonard and cornerback Kenny Moore II. Then Indy added two more players with Pro Bowl resumes, defensive end Yannick Ngakoue and cornerback Stephon Gilmore, the league’s 2019 defensive player of the year. The combination of Ngakoue and Gilmore should help Indy fill two glaring holes from last season a consistent pass rush and a pass defense that struggled to close out games. The Colts won both meetings by a combined score of 62-3.

Indians Split Doubleheader with Omaha

After falling in Game 1 in extra innings, 5-4, the Indianapolis Indians earned a split of a doubleheader with the Omaha Storm Chasers at Werner Park on Wednesday night, winning Game 2, 4-3.

In Game 1, the Indians (68-62) fell in a back-and-forth affair in extras. After the two finished the seven scheduled innings deadlocked 3-3, Indianapolis struck first in the top of the eighth with a looped single from center fielder Jared Oliva and a fielding error from newly entered Omaha left fielder Clay Dungan to plate placed runner Drew Maggi. In the bottom of the eighth, the Storm Chasers (63-68) responded with a game-tying RBI single through the right side of the infield from third baseman Nick Loftin. In the ninth, Omaha right-hander Wyatt Mills (W, 1-0) kept placed runner Bligh Madris at second base and held Indianapolis off the board by inducing a soft ground out to the mound and two strikeouts sandwiching an intentional walk of Indians first baseman Mason Martin. In the bottom half of the ninth, Indians right-hander Travis MacGregor (L, 1-2) got Storm Chasers center fielder Dairon Blanco to softly ground out to third, but that pushed right fielder Brewer Hicklen from second to third base. Catcher Jakson Reetz, who hit a two-run home run in the second inning, skied a ball to straight-away center field, just deep enough to allow Hicklen to tag and score to win the game. The Indians’ offensive output in Game 1 was highlighted by Madris, who cracked a two-run home run down the right field line for his first home run with Indianapolis since July 23 at Victory Field, and Martin, whose team-leading 16th home run in the fourth tied the game at three.

In Game 2, two unearned runs started the scoring for the Indians against Omaha left-hander Drew Parrish (L, 3-8) with an error from Storm Chasers shortstop Maikel Garcia leading to an Indianapolis run in both the first and second inning. Indianapolis right-hander Noe Toribio (W, 5-2), in his first Triple-A start, held Omaha off the board until a wild pitch plated Hicklen in the fourth and catcher Jose Briceño belted a solo home run to left center in the fifth. With the game tied 2-2 in the top of the sixth, a Mason Martin sacrifice fly to deep center and a hard-hit ground ball double down the third base line from Oliva plated the go-ahead and deciding runs. After Indians reliever Hunter Stratton (S, 3) allowed a home run to designated hitter Freddy Fermin in the sixth, he shut the door to secure the win with a scoreless seventh.
