
Indiana-Maryland football game to kick off at 3:30pm on ESPN2, October 15th
The Indiana football program will kick off at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, October 15 at Memorial Stadium against Maryland on ESPN2. Indiana (3-2, 1-1 B1G) and Maryland (4-1, 1-1 B1G) will meet for the 11th time in program history. IU owns a 7-3 overall record versus the Terrapins and has won five of the eight meetings as Big Ten opponents. Indiana will host Michigan this Saturday at Noon while Maryland Hosts Purdue at the same time.
Courtney Cronin and Rhett Lewis to co-Emcee Hoosier Hysteria
ESPN’s Courtney Cronin and NFL Network’s Rhett Lewis will serve as co-emcees for Hoosier Hysteria Presented by Smithville, which gets underway this Friday night at 7 p.m. at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Cronin and Lewis are both Indiana University graduates who have enjoyed tremendous successes on a national level in broadcasting. Cronin is a 2012 IU graduate who joined ESPN in 2017. A national award-winning journalist, Cronin started with ESPN as its Minnesota Vikings reporter before assuming the same role covering the Chicago Bears in 2022. In addition to those responsibilities, she is also a national host on ESPN Radio and makes regular appearances on ESPN television programs, including SportsCenter, First Take and Around the Horn.
“I couldn’t be more excited to return to my beloved alma mater to help kickoff the 2022-23 men’s and women’s basketball season,” Cronin said. “I spent four years covering Hoosier Hysteria as a student journalist and am honored to be the emcee for this year’s event. Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall is one of the most iconic arenas in sports and holds a lot of my favorite memories from my time at Indiana University. I cannot wait to be a part of the best environment in college basketball on Oct. 7.”Lewis, meanwhile, joined the NFL Network in 2014 and is the host of the network’s show, Path to the Draft. Prior to joining the NFL Network, Lewis worked as a sports anchor and reporter for television networks in Boston, New Orleans and Lubbock, Texas. In addition to his NFL Network responsibilities, Lewis is also a member of the IU Radio Network’s IU Football broadcast team alongside Don Fischer. A former IU Football player for Gerry DiNardo and Terry Hoeppner, Lewis earned his Bachelor’s degree from IU in 2005 and his Master’s in 2006.
“It’s been an incredible experience to be back around the Indiana Football program as the color analyst on radio broadcasts and going back to when I was playing for IU, I remember the atmosphere around campus on a football weekend when Hoosier Hysteria was added to the schedule,” Lewis said. “I’m so excited to now get to be a part of Hoosier Hysteria on Friday night celebrating another great year of Hoosier Basketball and then call Hoosier Football Homecoming on Saturday. What a weekend for the Glory of old IU!”
The Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall doors will open next Friday at 6 p.m., one hour in advance of the start of Hoosier Hysteria Presented by Smithville. While admission is free to the annual basketball season tip-off event, fans are encouraged to bring a canned food item to donate to the Hoosier Hills Food Bank. This is traditionally one of the organization’s most successful donation events of the year, bringing in as much as 12,000 pounds of food to support those in need in Monroe, Brown, Lawrence, Orange, Owen and Martin counties.
The Indiana Team Store, located inside the west doors of Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, will be open for the festivities as well. In addition to being open from 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 7, it will re-open at 6 p.m. and remain open for the duration of the event. In addition to the regular assortment of great IU merchandise, the IU Team Store will also have the 2022-23 Indiana Men’s and Women’s Basketball floating heads posters on sale for $12 apiece.
Indiana University Field Hockey Freshman Anna Mozeleski named Female Scholar Athlete of the Month
Indiana University Field Hockey freshman Anna Mozeleski has been named IU’s female Scholar-Athlete of the Month for October. The freshman midfielder has displayed excellence both in the classroom and on the field to achieve this honor. Mozeleski is a neuroscience major and has demonstrated outstanding work in her studies throughout her first collegiate athletic season.
The Kingston, Pa. native has been an integral part of the field hockey team’s success, starting in each of the team’s 13 games. Her high-level of play earned her Big Ten Freshman of the Week earlier this season. Mozeleski has three goals and two assists on the season thus far. Her first career goal was the game-winner at California in overtime when she scored via penalty stroke.
IHSAA Girls Volleyball State Tournament draw announced
Pairings were announced for the IHSAA Girls Volleyball State Tournament draw Sunday evening. The Sectionals will take place October 11, 13 and 15th. In Class 4A at Bloomington South will start on Thursday with Martinsville taking on Bloomington North at 6 pm followed by Greenwood and Center Grove at 7:30 pm. On Saturday morning at 11am Mooresville will face the Martinsville-Bloomington North winner while Bloomington South awaits the winner of Greenwood and Center Grove at 1 pm. The Championship game is 6pm Saturday evening.
In Class 3A at Edgewood. Indian Creek and West Vigo will open tournament play Tuesday night at 7pm. Thursday Northview will face Owen Valley at 6pm followed by Edgewood and South Vermillion at 7:30pm. Brown County will face the Indian Creek-West Vigo winner on Saturday at 10am followed by the winners of Thursday night’s matches in the second semifinal at 11:45am with the Championship Game scheduled for 6pm Saturday Evening.
In Class 1A at Clay City. The Hosts Clay City and Dugger Union will face off Tuesday night at 7pm. on Thursday at 6pm Shakamak and White River Valley will faceoff followed by Lighthouse Christian and North Central (Farmersburg) at 7:30pm. On Saturday morning at 11 am Bloomfield will face the Clay City-Dugger Union Winner followed by the Winners of Thursday Night’s games in the second semifinal at 12:30pm with the Championship game at 6 pm Saturday Evening. The Regionals are October 22nd, The Semistates are October 29th, and the State Finals will be held on the on the Ball State University Campus on Saturday November 5th where four state champions will be crowned.
Indiana Fever Players Emily Engstler and Lexie Hull named to USA Basketball 3×3 Under 23 World Cup roster
USA Basketball announced Monday the roster for the 2022 FIBA 3×3 U23 Women’s World Cup, which is scheduled for Oct. 5-9 in Bucharest, Romania. The USA 3×3 U23 World Cup Team includes Veronica Burton, Emily Engstler, Lexie Hull and N’dea Jones.
Burton, who just completed her first season with the WNBA’s Dallas Wings, has previous 5-on-5 experience as a member of the gold-medal-winning team at the 2021 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup. Engstler, who recently finished her debut WNBA season with the Indiana Fever, has previous 3×3 experience, having played this summer at the Montreal Stop of the FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series and the 2021 FIBA 3×3 U23 Women’s Nations League. Hull, also a member of Indiana Fever, will be making her USA Basketball international debut. Jones is a member of Force 10 3×3 and represented the U.S. at the FIBA 3×3 Women’s Series stop in Constanta, Romania last year.
Joe Lewandowski, who has extensive 3×3 coaching experience, will help the team in Bucharest. The United States will play pool play games tomorrow and Friday before the knockout round on Sunday.
