Indiana University Women’s and Men’s Basketball attend day 1 of Big Ten Media Days in Minneapolis
The Indiana University Women’s and Men’s Basketball Programs attended day 1 of Big Ten Media Days at the Target Center in Minneapolis Minnesota. IU along with Purdue, Maryland, Iowa, Northwestern, Rutgers and Illinois were represented with both Head Coaches and Players from each team. Each coach had a 10-minute press conference and players, and coaches had a 30-minute individual podium session in the afternoon. Along with an interview by the Big Ten Network Basketball crew live on the Big Ten Network.

IU Women’s Basketball Coach Teri Moren spoke first to the media, and she is excited for the season ahead. ” It’s time again for another exciting basketball season in Big Ten women’s basketball. We are grateful that we are part of it. We have an interesting team coming back with seven veterans, then the seven new faces we have. To say that we’re excited, we’re very excited about the season starting. We just look forward to another competitive Big Ten Conference and an exciting finish, as it’s been the last couple years”. Moren was asked about the transfer portal and being able to add Sara Scalia who was the leading scorer at Minnesota last season before transferring to IU the offseason. “I think the transfer portal is an interesting thing that’s happening right now in athletics. I think there are some really good pieces to it, there’s some frustrating pieces to it. We have benefited from the portal. I would be lying if I told you we haven’t. I think it’s going to stay, so we all have to adapt, just like a lot of things that are happening right now in athletics. We’re excited about Sara joining our basketball team. We obviously had to play against her. We had to do scouting reports for a young lady like Sara. So, we’re excited that she’s joining us. Yeah, we’ll keep looking. But to say we’re a program that wants to be made up of all transfers, that’s not the case for us. We really like the combination of the two”. Graduate Student Grace Berger and Senior Mackenzie Holmes were the student athletes that represented the program and for Berger it’s the second straight season she has been at Media Days as she attended last year in Indianapolis along with Ali Patberg.

Mike Woodson took the podium and is glad that he is no longer a rookie as a college head coach. “First of all, let me just say it’s an honor to be back this season. I think about my coaching staff who called me all season a rookie, so I can get that off my plate this season, being my second year (smiling)”. Indiana has very tough Non-Conference schedule with games against Kansas, North Carolina, Arizona and Xavier but Woodson is happy to see where they stack up early on. “I think competition is great, man. I mean, it’s good for your program. I thought last season we made a major step. My whole team, that was the first time they experienced the Big Dance. I remember back in the day we used to always experience the Big Dance. So, I was very excited for our ballclub. We thought coming into this season, not even knowing if we were going to get Trayce back, Race had committed to come back, we had already put our schedule in play with North Carolina and Kansas and Arizona. Which I think is good. It gives us the opportunity to play some of the best teams in the country, just see where you are as a ballclub”. Trayce Jackson Davis and Plymouth Minnesota native Race Thompson attended Media Days for the second year in a row and Jackson-Davis was wearing a candy stripe jacket.

Coaches and Players from Wisconsin, Nebraska, Ohio State, Minnesota, Michigan. Michigan State and Penn State will be on for day 2 starting at 9:30 am Eastern Time. It will be the same format as day 1. This is the second year in a row that the Big Ten Conference has held Media Days for both Men’s and Women’s Basketball at the same time and location. Last season it was held at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis but the Big Ten Awarded Minneapolis the 2023 and 2024 Big Ten Women’s Basketball Tournaments along with the 2024 Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament.

IHSAA Strips Huntington University of this year’s Cross-Country Semi State
The Indiana High School Athletic Association announced the Oct. 22 Cross Country Semi State scheduled for the Huntington University course has been relocated. The semi state instead will be run at Indiana Wesleyan University. Semi states qualify teams and runners for the Oct. 29 state meet at Terre Haute.

Paul Neidig, commissioner of the IHSAA, said in a statement: “After much discussion from all parties involved, I felt it was best to move the cross-country semistate scheduled to be held at Huntington University to Indiana Wesleyan located in Marion. With the issues surrounding the cross-country program at Huntington we felt the potential for a significant distraction was just too great. We certainly hope to return to Huntington for the 2023 tournament.”

The IHSAA’s action followed a petition signed by more than 200 current and former Huntington University women’s athletes calling for the ouster of university leaders who knew about allegations of abuse in the track and cross-country programs. On Thursday, the university put cross-country coach Lauren Johnson and assistant Curtis Hines on administrative leave. An IndyStar investigation into the Christian college disclosed a cult-like atmosphere centered around former coach Nick Johnson. There were allegations of sexual and physical abuse and pressure to submit to doping.

A federal lawsuit was filed Sept. 30 on behalf of two former runners, Hannah Stoffel and Emma Wilson, alleging criminal battery by Nick Johnson and negligence by Lauren Johnson, his wife; Hines; Huntington University, and other school officials. HU was also accused of Title IX violations. Nick Johnson was fired as HU coach in December 2020 and succeeded by his wife.
