City’s Data Portal and Dashboards named in Best of Indiana Awards for Best Application Serving the Public
At the October 6th Indiana Digital Government Summit, The City of Bloomington’s Open Data Portal was commended for providing residents, city staff, and other stakeholders with data that is refreshed nightly from the City of Bloomington’s data and information systems. The portal was developed by the City of Bloomington Information & Technology Services Department and Tyler Technology to increase the transparency of city data while reducing the amount of effort required by city staff to compile and publish the data for public use.

By implementing Tyler’s Data & Insights (Formerly Socrata) portal, the City has been able to automate data extraction and publishing from the City’s data systems and also provide real-time access to the City’s Geographic Information System (GIS) data services. The portal allows non-City staff to access and create visualizations, which has enabled non-city users and collaborators such as Indiana University to create and publish visualizations of city data within the data portal and automatically access the most current data. A collaboration between Indiana’s Office of Technology and Government Technology magazine, the Best of Indiana Awards recognize state and local government organizations for their standout contributions, best practices, and innovations in information technology that improve citizen services.

IU Researcher determine sports like soccer, basketball better for young athletes’ bone health than running alone
Young athletes who participate in multidirectional sports, instead of specializing in a unidirectional sport like running, can build stronger bones that may be at less risk for bone injuries as adults, according to a new study from Indiana University researchers.

Published in the American College of Sports Medicine’s Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, the study examined Division I and II female cross country runners, who often experience bone stress injuries like stress fractures. The researchers found that athletes who ran and participated in sports that require movement in many directions – such as basketball or soccer – when younger had better bone structure and strength than those who solely ran, swam or cycled.

As a result, the study’s findings support recommendations that athletes delay specialization in running and play multi-directional sports when younger to build a more robust skeleton – and potentially prevent bone stress injuries.

1930 – Indianapolis residents with a sense of adventure were invited to take a ride in the Goodyear Blimp. Named The Vigilant, the Zeppelin-Type ship was 128 feet long, 37 feet in diameter, and carried 86,000 pounds of helium. The charge was $5.00 for a 15-minute flight over the city. The craft was under the command of Charles E.
