Indiana University Men’ Soccer handles Division 3 Trine 3-0
Indiana University Men’s Soccer beat the Division Three Trine Thunder 3-0 Thursday evening on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers are 8-3-5 on the season and have a huge match hosting Maryland at 1pm Sunday with the Big Ten Regular Season Championship on the line. Trine falls to 8-6-3 and will have a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Conference Tournament match on Saturday at Noon and four-hour bus ride back to Angola in Northeast Indiana after this match. Indiana rested several starters in preparing for Sunday’s match with Maryland and several reserves who have seen limited action this season giving coach Todd Yeagley an opportunity gives guys an opportunity to play against a lower tier team. It took the Hoosiers just over 20 minutes to find the net when Luka Bazerra found the top left of the goal off his right foot with an assist to Lukas Hummell. Alex McGill scored in the 32nd minute finding the top left of goal off his right foot with the assist to Bazerra and Emerson Nieto. Karsen Henderlong added the third Hoosier goal at the 47:35 mark when he found the bottom left of goal off the right foot with Maouloune Goumballe and Nieto getting the assist.

Indiana Goalkeeper Bryant Pratt played the first 75 minutes and 19 seconds and made 2 saves. Bloomington North Graduate Austin Heimbaugh replaced Pratt and did not have to made a save in 14 minutes and 41 seconds of action. The Hoosiers outshot the Thunder 18-4 with a 7-2 advantage in shots on goal. Trine goalkeeper Aidan McGonagle had 4 saves in the first 72 minutes and 35 seconds. Luis Gonzalez did not have to make a save in 17 minutes and 25 seconds of action. Trine had 9 fouls and IU had 6. IU had 7 corner kicks and Trine had 4 and IU was called offsides 5 times and Trine did not have an offsides call. IU won last year’s meeting 9-0 and the Hoosiers have outscored Trine 12-0 in these two meetings between the two teams.

Indiana University Men’s Basketball host Marian University in exhibition
Indiana University will get to see their first opponent of the season as they take on the Marian University Knights which is an NAIA team from Indianapolis at 3pm Saturday in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers finished 21-14 last season and lost to Saint Mary’s in the NCAA Tournament First Round after a First Four win over Wyoming. Big Ten Preseason player of the year Trayce Jackson-Davis returns and was named the Karl Malone watch list which goes to the nation’s top Power Forward. Jackson-Davis was previously honored as a Preseason All-American by the Blue-Ribbon College Basketball Yearbook, College Hoops Today, The Almanac, CBS Sports, The Athletic and the Associated Press. Jackson-Davis was also named Preseason Big Ten Player of the Year. Jackson-Davis enters the year ranked 15th all-time at IU in scoring (1,565), 19th in scoring average (16.9), ninth in rebounds (797), seventh in blocked shots (178), and seventh in field goal percentage (55.8%). He was named a third-team All-American as a sophomore, has earned all-district honors each of the last two seasons, and has been a third team, first-team and second-team All-Big Ten choice in his first three campaigns with the Hoosiers. Race Thompson, Miller Kopp, Xavier Johnson, Anthony Leal, Jordan Geronimo, Trey Galloway, Logan Duncomb and Tamar Bates all return for the Hoosiers along with Jackson-Davis. The Hoosiers welcome a top Freshman class with Jalen Hood-Schifino, Malik Reneau, Kaleb Banks and CJ Gunn. Four walk On’s will make up the rest of the roster with Nathan Childress, Shaan Burke and Michael Shipp returning. Hogan Orbaugh a sophomore from Zionsville transfers in from Louisville. Second year Head Coach Mike Woodson put emphasis on defensive end as the Hoosier defense that was ranked as the most efficient in the league by KenPom (24th in the nation) and held opponents to a league-low 39.6% shooting from the floor. Expectations are very high for this Hoosier team as Indiana is predicted to win the Big Ten and make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament.

Marian who is ranked 14th in NAIA coming into this season, finished 26-6 last season and lost to Concordia University 90-67 in the NAIA Tournament second round in Omaha. 10 Of the 13 players on the roster are from Indiana with the others hailing from Texas, Ohio and Michigan. The Knights have 3 seniors, 5 Juniors, 2 Sophomores and 3 Freshman. The Knights are coached by Scott Headdy who is in fifth season as head coach after a 22-year high school coaching career. Assistant Coach Dalton Judd is a 2017 Indiana University Graduate and Director of Basketball Operations Bailey Barrett is a 2021 IU Grad. Steve Downing who is the school’s athletic director was a three-year letter winner at IU and was a member of the 1974 world champion Boston Celtics. Under former IU head coach Bob Knight’s tutelage, he was named the Big Ten men’s basketball most valuable player in 1973 after averaging 20.1 points and 10.6 rebounds per game in leading the Hoosiers to the NCAA Final Four. In 1995, Downing was inducted into the Indiana High School Basketball Hall of Fame and, in 2009, was inducted into the Indiana University Athletic Hall of Fame. Downing was a former associate director of athletics at Indiana University Bloomington (IU) for 22 years, where he created the student-Athlete Assistance Program, a prevention program for drug, alcohol, and personality disorders.

Indiana University Women’s Soccer Players Jamie Gerstenberg and Karlee Luker earn Big Ten honors
Jamie Gerstenberg and Karlee Luker were awarded Big Ten regular season awards for their contributions and effort during Indiana women’s soccer season, the league announced on Thursday afternoon.

Gerstenberg was named All-Big Ten third team, for her second Big Ten honor. She was named to the All-Big Ten Freshman team in 2021. The Birkenwerder, Germany, totaled six shutouts this season and nearly 1,200 minutes between the posts. She posted a goal Against Average of .77 and totaled 52 saves on the year.

Luker was named as a Big Ten Sportsmanship Award Honoree for her active support for her teammates and competitors. The senior played in 25 games for the cream and crimson. She earned five starts and totaled nearly 700 minutes on the pitch. Luker won the award in the 2020-21 season and is the second player to be nominated for the award other than Hanna Nemeth. 

Bloomington North and Bloomington South open up HS Football Sectionals
Bloomington North and Bloomington South Open up Class 5A High School Sectional 15 semifinal action at 7 pm this evening as both schools is looking to face each other in the sectional championship one week from tonight. Bloomington North will host Seymour while Bloomington South travels to Columbus East. Class 5A along with Class 6A were off last week because of limited number of teams in each class.

Bloomington North finished the regular season at 5-4 and averaged 31.1 points on offense and gave up 28.2 points on defense. Bloomington North is 21-37 all time in the state tournament and this will be the first meeting with Seymour in the State Tournament. The Owls are 6-3 and are coming off a 42-13 home loss to Bloomington South two weeks ago. Seymour averages 23.3 points on offense and gives up 22.8 points on defense. Seymour is 35-40 all time in the State Tournament.

Bloomington South finished the regular season 7-1 and a six-game winning streak. The Panthers average 38.9 points on offense and give up 11.3 points on defense. Bloomington South is 68-37 all time in the State Tournament. This will the fourth state tournament meeting between the two schools. Bloomington South won 12-9 in 1983 and 35-13 in 1991 in the Sectional. Columbus East won the 2016 Semi State meeting 35-15. Columbus East finished the regular season 4-5 and average 22.8 points on offense and give up 16.1 points on defense. Columbus East 71-39 all time in State Tournament play.

Monroe County well represented in State Cross Country Finals
Three Teams and Three individuals will be representing Monroe County in the IHSAA Cross Country State Finals at the Lavern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute Saturday Afternoon. The Girls Race will start at 12pm as Bloomington South and Edgewood Freshman Hannah Crain will be represented. The Panthers finished second in the Semi State and Crain finished 14th as individual to qualify for state. The Boys Race will start at 2:30pm Bloomington South and Bloomington North finished 3rd and 4th in the Semi State and Edgewood Sophomores Zane Meyer and Caleb Webb will compete as individuals. Terre Haute has hosted the State Cross Country Finals since 2004.
