
Indiana University Men’s Basketball gets defensive in exhibition win
The Indiana Hoosiers Men’s Basketball team beat NAIA’s Marian University from Indianapolis 78-42 Saturday afternoon in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall in the teams first of two exhibition games. Without starters Trayce Jackson-Davis and Tamar Bates as Head Coach Mike Woodson were “Banged Up” earlier this week, the Hoosiers put four players in double figures and had two players with double-doubles from Freshman Malik Reneau and Sophomore Logan Duncomb. Reneau had 14 points and 11 rebounds and Duncomb added 11 points and 11 rebounds. Duncomb played limited minutes a season ago and said after the game that He did not put in the work and things that he needed to do and is putting in the work in. Race Thompson added 13 points and Freshman Jalen Hood-Schifino added 11 points. The Freshman Malik Reneau and Jalen Hood-Schifino came from Montverde Academy in Florida and they got the start along with Thompson, Miller Kopp and Xavier Johnson. Head Coach Mike Woodson was pleased with how his two freshman starters performed. “Jalen puts the work in and he competes, he deserves to start”. Woodson said after the game. “I thought they passed with flying colors after their first college basketball game”. The Hoosiers played all 11 scholarship players that were available and 10 scored and walk on Nathan Childress played but did not score as the Hoosiers got 31 points off the bench.
The Hoosiers shot 52 percent from the field going 36-62 from the field. Indiana was 8-19 from three-point line along with 6-9 shooting from the free throw line. The Hoosiers had 48 total rebounds and 35 of those came on the defensive end. The Hoosiers controlled every stat with 40 points in the paint, 16 assists, 13 points off turnovers, 16 second chance points, 6 fast break points, 5 blocks and 5 steals. Indiana committed 11 turnovers and held Marian to 25 percent shooting on 14-57 from the field.
Marian did not have any player in double figures as Hayden Langkabel had 9 points to the lead the Knights in scoring. Marian was 8-34 from three-point range for 24 percent and 6-13 from the free throw line for 42 percent. The Knights had 16 points off turnovers, 12 turnovers, 30 rebounds, 13 second chance points, 11 bench points, 8 points in the paint, 2 blocks, 8 assists, 5 steals and 2 blocks. Marian won their NAIA opener Thursday Night 92-64 against Saint Xavier from Chicago
Mike Woodson talked about his relationship with former IU great Steve Downing who is the athletic director at Marian and a close friend. Woodson said that these teams will play every year if he can as long as he is here as head coach. The Hoosiers will be back in action on Thursday at 7pm when they Host NAIA Powerhouse St Francis from Ft Wayne in the second and final exhibition game.
Indiana University Swimming and Diving sweep Missouri in home opener
No. 8/13 Indiana swimming and diving took care of business in its first home meet of the 2022-23 season, earning wins for both teams against No. 18/RV Missouri on Saturday Inside Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center. The Men won 168-125 while the Women won 171-123.
Diving had another dominant day on the springboards, with three athletes combining to sweep the four events. Additionally, eight IU divers totaled 14 NCAA zone qualifying marks. For the women, junior Anne Fowler posted season highs on both the 1-meter (316.05) and 3-meter (337.65) boards to win both events. Sophomores Quinn Henninger and Carson Tyler were each other’s toughest competition in the men’s diving events, both scoring at least 400 points on each board. Henninger won their duel on the 1-meter board, 416.63-409.13, with the next-best diver scoring 343.05. On 3-meter, Tyler just outscored Henninger, 415.50-411.30, with third place going to freshman teammate Maxwell Weinrich who posted a 365.93 score.
Despite many IU swimmers competing outside of their normal events, Hoosiers were still able to pull off individual wins and highlight performances. Sophomore swimmer Anna Peplowski continued her great run of form, this time in the freestyle events. After sweeping the backstroke races in each of IU’s first two meets this season, the reigning Big Ten Women’s Swimmer of the Week won the 50, 100 and 200-yard freestyle events on Saturday. In the 200, she posted an NCAA B cut 1:46.81 to win by over three seconds.
The men’s Big Ten Swimmer of the Week, Brendan Burns showed his competitive edge in the men’s 200-yard freestyle. Normally a butterfly and backstroke swimmer, Burns faced up against Missouri’s Jack Dahlgren, who finished 13th in this event at the 2022 NCAA Championships. After trailing Dahlgren by four tenths through the first 50, Burns used his advantage underwater to outpace Dahlgren the rest of the way. In a photo finish, Burns touched in 1:36.11 beat Dahlgren by six hundredths. After breaking 20 seconds in the 50 free for the first time in his career last week, senior Van Mathias did so again while setting a personal best 19.60 on Saturday. Mathias was the lone swimmer to beat 20 seconds, including relays, in Saturday’s meet and just missed the NCAA B cut mark, which is set at 19.59. Two freshman swimmers earned their first collegiate individual wins. Mya DeWitt swam the 200-yard backstroke in 1:59.79 and Katie Forrester captured the 200 fly in 2:01.39. Indiana returns to action November 17-19 for the Ohio State Fall Invitational in Columbus, Ohio. IU’s men finished first in the event last season, while the women placed third.
Maryland Men’s Soccer wins Big Ten regular season title with 1-1 draw at Indiana
The final day of the Big Ten Men’s regular season Sunday Afternoon was nothing short of dramatic with all four games being held at the same time and at the end of day Maryland wins the Big Ten Title with a 1-1 draw against Indiana on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Maryland wins its third conference title with the others coming in 2014 and 2016. The Terrapins finish the conference with a 4-0-4 record and 16 points. Rutgers who was the only team off will be the second seed with a 4-2-2 record and 14 points will be the second seed based on goal differential. Ohio State who lost 3-2 at Wisconsin will be the number three seed with a 4-2-2 record with 14 points and Wisconsin 3-4-1 with 10 Points will be the seventh seed. Indiana is 3-1-4 with 13 Points will be the number 4 seed and will host 5th seed Penn State in the Quarterfinals on Friday. Penn State beat Michigan 3-2 giving Penn State 12 Points with a 3-1-3 record and Michigan finishing in 9th and not advancing to the Big Ten Tournament with a 1-6-1 record and 4 points. Northwestern beat Michigan State 2-1 as Northwestern will be the eight seed with a 1-5-2 record and Michigan State finishes 3-3-1 with 10 points and will be the sixth seed.
Indiana scored first when Ryan Whittenbrink booted a huge free kick from outside the box with of his right foot and going top left of goal to give the Hoosiers 1-0 lead at the 24:42 mark. The Hoosiers would keep the lead until the 86:56 mark when Stefan Copetti scored top left of goal passed Indiana Goalkeeper JT Harms and assist when to Joshua Bolma. Maryland outshot Indiana 12-6 and 4-3 Shots on Goal. JT Harms made three saves for Indiana while Niklas Neumann made 2 saves for Maryland. Maryland committed 14 fouls and Indiana committed 13 along with a yellow card for each team. Maryland had 3 corners to 2 for the Hoosiers. Maryland was called offside 3 times and Indiana 2.
Indiana finishes the regular season 8-3-6 while Maryland finishes 9-2-5. Indiana leads the all-time series 6-5-8. Although this is a draw it feels more like a loss since Maryland needed a draw after Ohio State loss and the Hoosiers watched it slipped away. “The locker room is very quiet” Head Coach Todd Yeagley said after the game. ” The guys are very disappointed and this one hurts with the opportunity to get the win will we regroup and get ready for the next match”. Yeagley said.
Bloomington North and Bloomington South win sectional football semifinal games
Bloomington North and Bloomington South won their Class 5A Sectional 15 Semifinal Football games on Friday Night setting up a city battle for the sectional championship this Friday Night at 7pm at Bloomington South. Bloomington North beat Seymour 56-38 and Bloomington South beat Columbus East 35-7. The Cougars will come into the game with a 6-4 record and the Panthers are 8-1 and on a seven-game winning streak. Bloomington South won the regular season meeting 45-7 September 9 on the Northside.
Martinsville beat Bedford North Lawrence 42-14 to advance to the Class 4A Sectional 23 Championship game. Martinsville 8-3 will travel to 9-2 East Central Friday night at 7pm. Bedford North Lawrence ends the season at 6-5.
Owen Valley knocked off defending 3A State Champion Gibson Southern 28-21 in a battle of unbeaten teams before a standing room only crowd in Spencer. Owen Valley 11-0 will host 3-8 Pike Central Friday at 7pm in Class 3A Sectional 30 Championship Game.
Linton beat Southmont 35-29 in Class 2A Sectional 37 Semifinals. The Miners are 11-0 for the first time since 2016 and will travel to Sullivan 7-4 for the Sectional Championship game Friday Night at 7pm.
Bloomington North Boy’s Cross Country finish 7th in State Finals
The Bloomington North Boys Cross Country team finished 7th place in the IHSAA Boys State Cross Country Finals at the Lavern Gibson Cross Country Course in Terre Haute Saturday Afternoon. The Cougars scored 265 points and Senior Kyle Clark finished in 11th place. Bloomington South finished in 16th place and Junior Ryan Rheam finished in 13th place. Carmel won its 17th state title with 103 points and Zionsville finished second with 106 Points. Carmel Senior Kole Mathison won the Indvidual Title and became just the second Carmel runner to win the title joining IU’s Ben Veatch who went back-to-back in 2014-15.
Bloomington South finished in 16th place with a team score of 388 points. Senior Lilly Meyers finished 24th and Junior Clara Graham finished 98th for the Panthers. Edgewood Freshman Hannah Crain finished in 115th place. Noblesville won its first state title with 122 points and Columbus North was second with 153 points. Indianapolis Bishop Chatard Senior Lilly Cridge took home her second consecutive Indvidual title and became the 7th individual to win multiple state titles.
