Indiana Men’s Basketball scores 101 Points in win over Bethune-Cookman
The Indiana Hoosiers Men’s Basketball Team used a big first half run to put the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats away 101-49 Thursday Night in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers are 2-0 and will have a week off before traveling to Xavier next Friday for the Gavitt Games Matchup between the Big Ten and Big East Conferences.  This was the first meeting between these two programs and Indiana is 9-0 all-time against teams from the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Bethune-Cookman is 0-2 against the Big Ten this season after a loss at Iowa Monday night Bethune Cookman Head Coach Reggie Theus and Indiana Head Coach Mike Woodson were teammates in the NBA for the Kansas City/Sacramento Kings playing 195 games together.  Billy Garrett Assistant Coach for Bethune-Cookman is the son of IU Legend Bill Garrett who broke the Big Ten’s color barrier in in 1947 and played for IU until 1951.

Bethune-Cookman led 10-9 with 14:57 left in the first half which was their only lead of the game. Miller Kopp drained a three with 14:45 left and the Hoosiers led 12-10 and the run started as the Hoosiers outscored the Wildcats 37-13 to take a 49-23 lead into the locker room.  The Hoosiers increased the lead in the second half outscoring the Wildcats 52-29. “It was a total team effort from everybody and we should average 20-25 assists a game and then end result was a win and that’s all that matters” said Head Coach Mike Woodson after the game. The Hoosiers shared the ball with 27 assists, pulling down 41 rebounds and 10 steals. Indiana had 13 turnovers but the Hoosiers also had 7 dunks in the game.

Trayce Jackson-Davis scored 21 points going 9-10 from the field and pulling down 6 rebounds. Miller Kopp added 12 points and knocked down 4 three pointers. Jordan Geronimo added 11 points and hit his only three-point attempt of the night going 4-5 from the field and 2-2 from the free throw line. Trey Galloway added 10 points and hit two three pointers. Indiana 12 of 14 players score in this game. The Hoosiers scored 51 points off the bench and 42 points in the paint. Malik Reneau had 9 points and was one of six Hoosiers to knock down a three pointer.

The Hoosiers shot 53 percent from the field, 10-24 from three-point range for 41 percent and 21-22 from the free throw line for 95 percent. The Hoosiers struggled from the foul line against Morehead State but when the Hoosiers had a huge shooting night in all three phases inside, outside and free throws. “It makes a big difference when we can spread the floor and knock them down and free throws is all about mentality” Trey Galloway said after the game. Jalen-Hood Schifino scored 8 points, 8 assists, 5 rebounds. Xavier Johnson had 7 points, 6 assists 4 rebounds and a steal and their teammates take notice of how much they impact the game. “Both those guys are super skilled and are learning and getting better everyday Said Miller Kopp about Jalen Hood-Schifino and Xavier Johnson.

The Wildcats were led in scoring by Joe French with 11 points. Marcus Garrett added 10 points who is the Grandson of IU Legend Bill Garrett along with his dad Billy got a special moment for the Garrett Family when Marcus scored his first bucket in historic Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall and place that his grandfather made history. Indianapolis native Demani McEntire scored 4 points in 24 minutes. Bethune Cookman shot 39% from the field, 3-15 from three-point range for 20% and 6-13 from the free throw line for 42 %. The Wildcats pulled down 19 rebounds, 8 assists, 7 steals, 1 block and committed 19 turnovers.

Indiana University Football travels to No. 2 Ohio State
The Indiana Hoosiers football team will have a tall task on Saturday at Noon as they face the Number 2 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes on the road in Columbus, Ohio. The game will be televised on Fox. Indiana comes in 3-6 overall and 1-5 in the Big Ten. A loss Saturday would officially eliminate the Hoosiers from bowl contention for the second season in a row. The Hoosiers lost to Number 11 Penn State 45-14 at Memorial Stadium last Saturday. Quarterback Connor Bazelak is set to be the starting quarterback after missing the Penn State game with an undisclosed injury. Bazelak has thrown for 2,099 yards, 12 touchdowns, 9 intercpetions and been sacked 23 times. Jack Tuttle started the Penn State game going 9-12 for 82 yards and a touchdown pass. Tuttle was sacked four times and knocked out the game with a shoulder injury. Head Coach Tom Allen announced to the Media Thursday that Tuttle will miss the rest of the season. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Dexter Williams II showed promise in his first college action. Williams was 4-for-11 for 41 yards and two interceptions. He ran four times for 24 yards. True freshman quarterback Brendan Sorsby also made his college debut. He was 3-for-6 for 8 yards and an interception.

The Hoosiers have struggled in the running game along with protecting the quarterback. Indiana has rushed for 708 yards and 10 touchdowns on 268 carries. The Offensive line gave up 4 sacks last week to Penn State and 29 on the season. With leading receiver Cam Camper missing the rest of the season with a Torn ACL. Emery Simmons is the leading receiver with 335 yards and 1 touchdown. Camper had 46 receptions for 569 yards and 2 touchdowns. Aaron Casey is the leading tackler on defense with 69 tackles and has done a great job filling for the injured Cam Jones at the linebacker position. Taiwan Mullen has 2 interceptions on the season including one last week against Penn State.

Ohio State is 9-0 on the season and 6-0 in the Big Ten. The Buckeyes are led by quarterback C.J. Stroud who has thrown for 2,099 yards 29 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. Miyan Williams is the leading rusher with 636 yards and 12 touchdowns. Ohio State has run the ball 319 times for 1,730 yards and 23 touchdowns. Marvin Harrison Jr. leads the Buckeye Receiving core with 53 receptions for 834 yards and 10 touchdowns. On defense linebacker Tommy Eichenberg has 85 tackles and Safety Tanner McAlister has 3 interceptions. The Hoosiers and Buckeyes will meet for the 96th time in program history and the 63rd time in Columbus. The last meeting in Ohio Stadium was a one-possession setback to the Buckeyes, 42-35, in 2020. The Buckeyes are 77-12-5 all time against the Hoosiers and have a 26-game winning streak dating back to 1990 when the teams tied 27-27 in Bloomington. Indiana last beat Ohio State October 8, 1988, 41-7 in Bloomington and The Hoosiers last win in Columbus was October 10,1987 with a 31-10 score line.

Indiana University Men’s Basketball signs Jakai Newton for 2023 Jakai Newton is officially a Hoosier. On Thursday, Newton signed his national letter of intent with Indiana, joining coach Mike Woodson and the Hoosiers for the 2023-24 season. 

“Jakai is an outstanding two-way player who takes pride in his ability to be a lockdown defender,” Woodson said. “He has tremendous athleticism and is aggressive at getting to the rim. He is well-coached and comes from a very well thought of high school program. He continues to improve and better himself with an outstanding work ethic. He has quick feet, a 6-10 wingspan, and a tremendous ability to elevate which will help him on both ends of the floor. He is a skilled player with a great build that should translate well to the Big Ten.”

Newton is a consensus four-star recruit and ranked No. 64 by Rivals, No. 84 by ESPN, No. 86 by 247Sports and No. 88 by On3. He joins Gabe Cupps, who signed his national letter of intent on Wednesday, in Indiana’s two-player 2023 recruiting class, which is ranked No. 29 by 247Sports and No. 31 by Rivals. 

“We are thrilled to welcome Gabe, Jakai, and their families to the IU Basketball program,” Woodson said. “They are two competitive individuals who offer a great deal to what we are building here, and both will be great additions.”

No.11 Indiana Women’s Basketball hosts U-Mass-Lowell
No. 11 Indiana resumes its opening week homestand when it faces UMass Lowell tonight. Tipoff is set for 7pm at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. For the 10th-consecutive season, Indiana opened up the season with a win as it got past Vermont, 86-43 on Tuesday night. Freshman guard Yarden Garzon shined in her Hoosier debut with 19 points on 5-for-8 shooting from beyond the arc. Garzon scored the most points for an IU Freshman debut since 2013-14 season. Garzon was one of four players in double figures as senior forward Mackenzie Holmes added 16 points and five rebounds. The Hoosiers had 18 assists as defense is always the standard as they held the Catamounts to 35% from the field and had 11 steals.

10 Hoosiers scored in the win over Vermont and 12 Hoosiers played with Henna Sandvik and Arielle Wisne not scoring. Kiranda Browne is the only Hoosier not playing with a thumb injury. Depth is a big key for this team this season with the starters playing a majority of minutes a season ago that is not the case this year with the Hoosiers scoring 19 points Tuesday night off its bench. This is the second all-time meeting between the two teams. Indiana won the only meeting between the two in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on November 23, 2016, 79-45. Head Coach Teri Moren is 173-89 in her 9th season at IU, and she is 372-219 overall in 20 seasons as a head coach.

UMass Lowell dropped its season opener at Boston College on Monday night. Senior guard Jaliena Sanchez led the way for Lowell with 16 points and five assists against BC while junior guard Jaini Edmonds added 10 points. They were picked to finish sixth in the American East this season as it returns seven upperclassmen, including senior Kaylen Banwareesingh, who averaged 6.6 points and 3.4 rebounds per game last season. Head Coach Denise King is 11-17 in her second season.

Purdue Women’s Basketball lands No. 21 recruiting class
Purdue Women’s Basketball head coach Katie Gearlds welcomed five new Boilermakers to the family Wednesday on National Signing Day. The quintet was ranked No. 21 by ESPNW. After her first full recruiting cycle as the head coach of her alma mater, Gearlds gladly announced the additions of Mary Ashley Groot (New York City), Sophie Swanson (Barrington, Ill.), Emily Monson (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and homegrown talents Rashunda Jones (South Bend) and McKenna Layden (Kokomo). The five submitted their National Letters of Intent to play for the Boilermakers on Wednesday. The quintet marks the largest signing day class for Purdue since 2013.

  • MARY ASHLEY GROOT – 6-2 | F | New York City, N.Y.
    Mary Ashley Groot is a 6-2 forward out of New York City. A two-time state champion, Groot will arrive in West Lafayette following six-years of varsity experience. Groot is an elite rebounder on both ends of the floor. She brings a physical presence to the paint on the offense end and can finish through contact. Her extensive experience on the floor has developed a high-level leadership quality.
  • RASHUNDA JONES – 5-8 | G | South Bend, Ind.
    An Indiana talent, Rashunda Jones is one of the premiere guards in the state. A versatile guard, Jones’ court vision and elite passing allows her to be a total floor general and leader on the floor. Jones also makes an impact on the defensive end with her athleticism as a lock-down defender, knowing what it takes to win.
  • EMILY MONSON – 6-0 | G | Murfreesboro, Tenn.
    Emily Monson is a tall, rangy guard out of Murfreesboro, Tenn. The 6-foot guard will be an instant perimeter threat with her deep range. A multi-tool player, Monson has high basketball IQ that is shown on both ends of the floor. She uses her length to get in the passing lanes on defense. On top of her talent on the court, Monson is also a great motivator and teammate.
  • McKENNA LAYDEN – 6-2 | G | Kokomo, Ind.
    The Boilermakers welcome the younger-half of the Layden sisters in McKenna. The 6-foot-2 guard is a deep-range shooter, who can score at all levels. Defensively, she poses a threat in the passing lanes and can guard multiple positions. Layden runs the floor well both ways in transition. Coming from a basketball family, McKenna shows her passion for the game very time she sets foot on the floor.
  • SOPHIE SWANSON – 5-10 | G | Barrington, Ill.
    A pure scorer, Swanson will provide a scoring option at all three level. She has the ability to finish through traffic and off the dribble. Swanson is a scrappy defender on the ball and disrupts the passing lanes. She is a big-time competitor who plays with a chip on her shoulder to find a way to win.
