
#12 Indiana Women’s Basketball improves to 4-0 with win over Bowling Green
The 12th ranked Indiana Hoosiers improved to 4-0 on the season with a 96-61 win over the Bowling Green Falcons Thursday Night at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Sara Scalia led six Hoosiers in double figures with 17 Points. “She had a quiet 17 I didn’t realize until I saw the stat sheet that she scored 17 points” Head Coach Teri Moren said after the game. Mackenzie Holmes scored 16 points on 8-16 shooting but was 0-3 from the free throw line. Grace Berger scored 14 points; Sydney Parrish added 11 points and 10 Rebounds off the bench for her fifth double-double for her career and first as Indiana Hoosier. After Transferring from Oregon Parrish has embraced her new role being first off, the bench. “I am not used to starting but it has helped me, I love my role and will do anything to help the team win” Parrish said after the game. Freshman Yarden Garzon scored 11 points while Chole Moore-McNeil scored 10 points after a career high 15 points in her return to her home state of Tennessee Monday Night in the win against the Tennessee Lady Vols. The Hoosiers will host Quinnipiac from Hamden Connecticut on Sunday at 1pm.
Indiana started the game with Yarden Garzon missing two three pointers. Bowling Green led 6-5 with 7:26 left in the first quarter. Indiana went inside going 6-6 as the Hoosiers went on a 9-0 run to lead 13-5 with 5:47 left in the first quarter. Bowling Green broke the scoring drought with Sophie Dziekan scoring on a jumper 4:54 left in the first quarter. The Hoosiers came back when Alyssa Geary drained a three pointer as the Hoosiers went 7-7 from the field in that stretch before Sydney Parrish missed a three pointer with 3:25 left in the first quarter. Indiana led 28-10 after the first quarter and shot 9-16 from the field for 56% and 8-11 from the free throw line for 72%.
The Hoosiers continued shooting the ball well going 4-4 from the field halfway through the second quarter as Holmes missed a shot inside but the Hoosier’s defense proved though as it always does as the Falcons were held to 23% from the field 1-10 from three-point range and 4-8 from the free throw line for 50%. Indiana went 18-31 from the field for 58%, 5-11 from three-point range for 45% and 8-11 from the free throw line for 72% as Indiana led 49-21 going into the locker room after outscoring the Falcons 21-11 in the second quarter. Bowling Green battled in the third quarter going inside and getting points against the Indiana frontcourt as the Hoosiers outscored the Falcons 21-20 in the 3rd quarter but the Hoosier lead was 70-41 going into the fourth quarter. Indiana finished the fourth quarter outscoring BG 26-20.
Indiana shot 58% for the game, 7-19 from three-point range for 36% and 9-13 for 62 from the free throw line. The Hoosiers pulled down 47 rebounds, 25 assists, 9 steals, 6 blocks. The Hoosiers had 54 points in the paint, 28 points off the bench and committed 18 turnovers. “The free throw percentage needs to be better and I am disappointed with the turnovers that is too many and had great play off the bench” Head Coach Teri Moren said after the game.
Bowling Green was led in scoring by Elissa Brett with 15 points and Kadi Hempling added 11 points. The Falcons shot 35% from the field, 6-22 from three-point range for 27% and 7-12 from the free throw line for 58%. BG pulled down 28 rebounds, 12 assists, 5 steals, 2 blocks and committed 16 turnovers. The Falcons had 26 bench points and 26 points in the point. The Falcons fall to 2-1 on the season.
Indiana University Men’s Basketball hits the road to face Xavier
Indiana University continues its 123rd season of competition in men’s basketball with a matchup against Xavier as part of the Gavitt Games. Tip time is scheduled for 6pm this evening from the Cintas Center. The game will be nationally broadcasted on Fox Sports 1. The Musketeers finished the 2021-22 season with a 23-13 record. Xavier topped Texas A&M by a score of 73-72 to win the 2022 NIT Championship. Tonight’s matchup marks the 10th between the two schools. Indiana holds an 8-1 advantage in the previous nine games, but Xavier holds serve after winning by a score of 80-65 on Nov. 24, 2007, the last time the programs played. Indiana Hall of Fame inductee D.J. White recorded a 16-point, 10-rebound double-double, while 15-year NBA veteran Eric Gordon added 20 points in the game. Jerome Hunter who started his career at Indiana playing for two seasons from 2019-2021 plays his former team for the first time. Hunter played 55 games and started four for the Hoosiers and scored 272 points. Hunter has played 38 games and started 21 and has scored 153 points for the Musketeers. Senior Jack Nunge and his younger brother Bob who is a sophomore are from Newburgh Indiana and played at Castle HS. Jack started his career at the University of Iowa and played there for three seasons from 2017-21 before transferring to Xavier.
The Hoosiers will play in their fifth game in the seven-year history of the Gavitt Games. The game at Xavier will mark the second time Indiana will be on the road for the series. IU has won all three home matchups in the series, with wins coming against Creighton (86-65 in 2015), Marquette (96-73 in 2018), and St. John’s (76-74 in 2021). The Hoosiers lone loss came at Seton Hall (84-68) in 2017. Both Indiana and Xavier hold records of 3-1 in Gavitt Games, tied for the highest record for any team in the series with at least four games played. The series is named in honor of the late Dave Gavitt, former athletic director at Providence College and the first commissioner of the original Big East Conference of 1979–2013.
The Hoosier bench has outscored opponents 96-17 through two games. The second unit has accounted for 50.8% of IU’s scoring output this season. True freshman forward Malik Reneau and junior forward Jordan Geronimo are second and third, respectively, in scoring on the Hoosiers this season. The frontcourt duo averages 22.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per contest on 19-of-26 shooting (73.1%) from the floor. Sophomore guard Tamar Bates and sophomore guard Trey Galloway lead the second unit backcourt. The guards have combined for a 2-1 assist-turnover ratio and are shooting 4-of-11 (36.4%) from the 3-point line this season.
Indiana University Football travels to Michigan State for final regular season road game
Indiana Football will look to bring the Old Brass Spittoon back to Bloomington as they face the Michigan State Spartans at Noon Saturday on the Big Ten Network at Spartan Stadium in East Lansing. Michigan State leads this series 49-17-2 and Indiana shutout the Spartans in East Lansing in 2020.
Michigan State needs a win in its final two games to be eligible for a bowl berth for the second consecutive season. Indiana started 3-0 but hasn’t won since September and was eliminated from bowl contention last weekend. The Hoosiers can salvage something positive by winning the Old Brass Spittoon Trophy that goes to the winner of this game. Michigan State is 5-5 and 3-4 in the Big Ten while the Hoosiers are 3-7 overall and 1-6 in the Big Ten. The key matchup in this game is Michigan State’s passing offense against Indiana’s pass defense. The Hoosiers, who are ranked 115th in passing yards allowed (270.2) had problems covering Ohio State and will likely have similar match-up issues with the Spartans’ deep receiving corps led by Jayden Reed and Keon Coleman. The two have accounted for a combined 87 catches for 1,148 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Linebacker Aaron Casey, who leads the Hoosiers with 49 tackles and 10 tackles for loss while forcing two fumbles. Indiana desperately needs him to continue playing at an all-conference level to have a chance against Michigan State or Purdue. The Hoosiers have lost seven in a row, five by double digits, and are just 1-15 in league play over the past two seasons. … Indiana has won the Old Brass Spittoon twice since 2017. The Hoosiers have played the FBS’ toughest schedule. Their opponents are a combined 69-32 for a winning percentage of .683 … Indiana’s James Evans leads the nation with 26 punts inside the opponents’ 20-yard line and leads the Big Ten with 22 punts of 50 or more yards.
Michigan State Wide Receiver Jayden Reed, a fifth-year graduate senior who leads the Spartans with 45 catches for 548 yards and five touchdowns. He has a TD catch in five of the last six games. He ranks among the Big Ten leaders in TD receptions (5), receiving yards (548) and receptions (45). Through 10 games, Michigan State has forced 14 fumbles, which is tied for third most in the FBS. … Michigan State LB Cal Haladay had 19 total stops against Rutgers, the most by a Spartan since Eric Smith had 19 against Notre Dame in 2004. Michigan State has averaged 173 rushing yards per game in its five wins, compared to 44.8 yards in its five losses.
Indiana University Volleyball signs three players for 2023
Indiana Volleyball head coach Steve Aird announced the addition of three recruits in the 2023 class on Thursday afternoon. The Hoosiers welcome Ramsey Gary (Libero/Pendleton, Ind.), Ava Vickers (Middle Blocker/Fishers, Ind.) and Luca Fickell (Setter/Cincinnati, Ohio) to the program as a part of the early signing period.
Playing against elite competition, Gary and helped lead Munciana Volleyball Club to the 2022 AAU 18U Open National Championship last summer. She is a two-time club All-American and was named a 2022 Under Armour All-American, the second in the program’s 48-year history. Vickers won her second-consecutive national title with Munciana Volleyball Club after winning in 2021 alongside current IU players Carly Mills and Camryn Haworth. She and Haworth were high school teammates at Fishers High School where Vickers recorded 736 career kills and set the school’s all-time block record with 317. Gary and Vickers will help comprise a contingent of five Indiana natives on next year’s roster (Mills, Haworth and Kenzie Daffinee), all of which played for Munciana. Fickell, the daughter of University of Cincinnati Football Coach Luke Fickell, comes from an athletic family with elite ties to college athletics. She played club volleyball for Tri-State Elite and high school ball at St. Ursula Academy where she recorded 698 assists, 249 digs and 253 kills in her career.

Six Indiana University Women’s Soccer Players named CSC Academic First Team
Indiana women’s soccer student-athletes Anna Bennett, Jen Blitchok, Alaina Kalin, Sydney Masur, Megan Wampler and Paige Webber were named to the 2022 College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District First Team, the organization announced Wednesday. The six mark the most selections in a single season for the Hoosiers since four were honored in 2017. All-District Honorees will advance to the CSC Academic All-America® ballot. The All-America recipients will be announced in early December.
Bennett led the team with five points this season, scoring two goals and totaling one assist for the Hoosiers. The Holland, Mich., native scored her seventh career goal in a 2-2 draw versus Purdue. She was a recipient of the Academic All-Big Ten award in 2021. Bennett is majoring in Elementary Education. Blitchok is a two-time recipient of the award after she was named to the First Team list in 2021.
She was also named to the Academic All-Big Ten list and a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar in the 2021 season. The Grandville, Mich., native won the Jack D. Tichenor Award which is given to the student-athelte for the highest GPA in Indiana Athletics. She is working towards a degree in Economics at IU. Kalin helped lead the Hoosiers to a program record with eight consecutive shutouts to start the season. The Gibsonia, Pa., native has totaled 3 goals, 5 assists and 11 points on the pitch in her career. Also contributing 5486.42 minutes in her career with the cream and crimson. She totaled two assists in IU’s 3-0 win over Indiana State. Kalin was also named to the Academic All-Big Ten list in the 2020-21 and 2021 seasons. She is majoring in Criminal Justice.
Masur contributed to the Hoosiers eight consecutive shutouts to start the season for a new program record. She also helped the Indiana defense to a program best 10 shutouts during the 2021 season. In 2021, Masur was named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team and won the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award in The Montclair, N.J., native tallied one assist this season in Indiana’s 5-0 win over Trine.
Masur is majoring in Finance at IU. Wampler started every match this season (17) holding the backline strong for the Hoosiers. She contributed to eight consecutive shutouts to start the season, leading IU to a new program record. The defender scored her first career goal in IU’s 1-0 win over Northwestern on Oct. 13, 2021. The Carmel, Ind., native was earned the Big Ten Distinguished Scholar award in 2021 and made the Big Ten All-Tournament Team in 2019. Wampler is set to graduate with her degree from IU in Elementary Education in the spring. Webber netted her first sixth career goal for the Hoosiers against a 3-0 win against Indiana State this season. She scored a hat trick against Murray State in 2021 becoming the eighth player in program history to record one. The Grand Blanc, Mich., native was named Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week in 2021 and led the Hoosiers in goals scored with five. Webber is majoring in Human Biology at Indiana University.
