Hoosiers Handle Herd, Head to 28th Elite 8
Indiana Men’s Soccer has advanced to the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinal for the fourth time in six seasons. The No. 13-seeded Hoosiers (12-4-6, 3-1-4 B1G) extended their NCAA record to 28 Elite 8 appearances with a 1-0 victory over Marshall on Sunday (Nov. 27) night on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium. A 47th-minute header by senior Brett Bebej was the difference as IU earned a second straight clean sheet in the NCAA Tournament. Indiana will face UNC Greensboro either Friday or Saturday (Dec. 2-3) for a spot in the NCAA College Cup.

11th Ranked Indiana University Men’s Basketball takes care of Little Rock & Jackson State
The 11th ranked Indiana University Men’s Basketball team handled the Little Rock Trojans 87-68 and the Jackson State Tigers 90-51 last week in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers are 6-0 on the season and will host the North Carolina Tar Heels Wednesday in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at 9:15 pm and will be televised on ESPN.  North Carolina is currently ranked number 1 but that will change when the new associated press poll is released today after the Tar Heels lost to Iowa State 70-65 in the semifinals of the Phil Knight Invitational Tournament in Portland Oregon Friday evening and dropped a four-overtime game Sunday afternoon 103-101 to Alabama in the third-place game as they will come into Wednesday’s game with a 5-2 record.

In the Little Rock game Race Thompson finished with 20 pts along with 8 rebounds and played the second half with a headband after taking an elbow to the head. Freshman Jalen Hood-Schifino added 13 Pts. Jordan Geronimo had 11 points and 5 blocks. Freshman Malik Reneau scored 10 pts along with 6 rebounds and Xavier Johnson 10 assists and 9 Points. Indiana led 39-30 at Halftime. Little Rock cut the lead down to 6 in the second half but the Hoosiers used an 8-0 run in a minute and 2 seconds to put the game away as all 10 Hoosiers that played scored. Trayce Jackson Davis, Anthony Leal and Trey Galloway did not play due to Injuries. Jackson-Davis went out of the Miami Ohio game with a lower back injury and Leal an ankle injury against the Red Hawks.   

In the Jackson State game Sophomore Tamar Bates had a career high 22 Points and had his infant daughter in the post-game press conference. ” This is her first two games; she is excited as she is playing with the microphone, having my family here means a lot after having to miss thanksgiving last year for the first time ever and I have an army behind me with my family” Bates Said. Xavier Johnson added 16 Points and Trayce Jackson Davis scored 11 Pts after missing the Little Rock game.  The Hoosiers had 49 bench points as all 11 players that played scored for the 2nd game in a row. The Hoosiers had 23 assists and 10 steals and wowed the home crowd with 10 dunks. Indiana Led 44-28 at Halftime Trey Galloway missed his third straight game and Anthony Leal his second due to injuries.

#6 Indiana University Women’s Basketball wins two in Las Vegas
The Sixth ranked Indiana University Women’s Basketball team beat Auburn 96-81 and Memphis 79-64 at the Las Vegas Invitational last Friday and Saturday Night. The Hoosiers are 7-0 on the season and are averaging 88.7 points per game while holding the opponent to 59.1. The 79 points against Memphis ties for the lowest point total this season along with the road win at Tennessee November 14. Indiana has scored 96 points on Bowling Green and Auburn, 93 against UMass-Lowell, 92 against Quinnipiac and 86 points against Vermont. Auburn is the only team to score more than 70 points against the Hoosiers this season putting up 81. The Hoosiers held Tennessee to 67 points, Memphis to 64 and Bowling Green to 61. Quinnipiac was held to 55 Points, Vermont to 49 and the best defensive effort came against UMass-Lowell holding the River Hawks to 37 Points.

The games were held at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas. The tournament was played on a court in a large ballroom area that had no stands for spectators. Chairs were set up around the court. The games involving Indiana were delayed by half an hour last Friday and hour and fifth teen minutes on Saturday. Friday Memphis and St John’s ended in a brawl and Memphis left the floor before the game was over as St John’s won 61-57 causing a delay with the IU game while they were getting everything sorted out. Saturday night when Auburn Tigers player Kharyssa Richardson was injured after hitting the floor hard while scrambling for a loose ball. The game was delayed nearly an hour during the wait for her to get medical attention. According to the Auburn radio broadcast, it took more than 40 minutes for paramedics to arrive to the court. The medical delay caused the IU game to be delayed until 10pm Eastern time which the game was originally scheduled for 8:45pm.

Indiana head coach Teri Moren said she had no issues with the court itself and felt it had nothing to do with Berger’s injury. However, she was concerned at the length of time it took for Richardson to receive medical care. The Hoosiers still decided to play after that, with their game starting more than an hour late. “I don’t read a lot of social [media],” Moren said. “But this notion that the floor … there’s no problem with the floor. The injury to Grace did not happen because of the floor. “[But] I think any good tournament has EMT and all that, medical professionals, on site. And once again that wasn’t the case. Another big miss for this tournament. There were a lot of things that should have been better, and they just weren’t. I was very frustrated having to watch that moment for Auburn.” A site coordinator for the event told ESPN that he apologized to players, coaches, fans and referees about the tournament conditions, which have been discussed on social media. 

In the Auburn game Mackenzie Holmes scored 26 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Holmes went a perfect 10-10 from the field and 6-6 the free throw line. The Gorham Maine naïve tied her school record when she went 13-13 from the floor against Eastern Kentucky in 2020. Freshman Yadren Garzon added 21 points, Sydney Parrish scored 16 points off the bench, Chloe Moore-McNeil finished 15 pts and Sara Scalia added 12 pts. The big story in the game was graduate student Grace Berger who played 1 minute and 14 seconds before leaving the game with a knee injury and scored just 2 points. The Hoosiers had18 assists and 7 steals and led 51-39 at half which are the most points scored in a half this season. In the Memphis game Mackenzie Holmes scored 27 points as the Hoosiers scored 30 points in the second quarter to put the game away. Holmes went 20 for 23 from the field for the tournament. Yarden Garzon finished with 17 points, pulled down 6 rebounds and had 4 assists, Sara Scalia added 16 points and Sydney Parrish who got her first career start at IU scored 10 points and pulled down 7 rebounds. Indiana will host North Carolina at 6pm Thursday in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

Indiana University Men’s Soccer advances to the Elite Eight with win over Marshall
The number 13 national seed Indiana University Men’s Soccer team punched their ticket to the elite 8 with a 1-0 win over the Marshall Thundering Herd Sunday Night on Jerry Yeagley field at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers were making their 8th straight sweet 16 appearance which is an NCAA record. The Hoosiers are 12-4-6 on the season and will travel for an elite 8 matchup this weekend. The Hoosiers end the home season at 9-1-3 and 7 clean sheets. The Hoosiers and the Thundering Herd met for the second time ever after Marshall beat Indiana 1-0 in overtime in the 2020 NCAA Championship Game in Cary North Carolina that was played in the Spring of 2021 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic as it was Marshall’s only national championship. Nine Hoosiers played in that matchup and get their revenge for that loss. Marshall ends the season at 11-4-4 under Head Coach Chris Grassie who is 56-29-13 in 6th seasons at Marshall and 155-49-21 in 12 seasons as a head coach.

Less than two minutes into the second half Brett Bebej found the goal at the top right of goal on the header at the 46:54 mark with the assist to Ryan Whittenbrink off the corner kick. Whittenbrink got his 9th assist of the season along with 9 goals as he leads the team with 27 points. Whittenbrink has been big the last seven matches providing a goal contribution with 3 goals and 4 assists including the game winner in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in a 1-0 win over St Louis.

Marshall outshot the Hoosiers 12-10, but The Hoosiers had 6 shots on goal to just 2 for Marshall. Marshall goalkeeper Oliver Semmle had 5 saves while Indiana goalkeeper JT Harms made 2 saves. The Hoosiers committed 13 fouls to just 9 for Marshall. Indiana had 12 corner kicks and Marshall had just one as Indiana was called offsides just once and there were 5 yellow cards in the match with 3 for Marshall and two for Indiana.

Indiana University Football ends season with home loss to Purdue  
The Purdue Boilermakers beat the Indiana Hoosiers 30-16 at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington Saturday afternoon to keep the Old Oaken Bucket for second season in a row. Purdue improves to 8-4 overall and 6-3 in the Big Ten while Indiana finishes the season at 4-8 overall and 2-7 in the Big Ten. The win gave Purdue the Big Ten West Division Championship and a date with the Michigan Wolverines next Saturday night in the Big Ten Championship game in Indianapolis. Michigan defeated Ohio State 45-23 in Columbus Ohio Saturday afternoon as the Wolverines are in the Big Ten Title Game for the second season in a row after pounding Iowa 42-3 to win the 2021 Big Ten Title. Purdue is in the game for the first time in the game’s history since it started in 2011.  Purdue leads the all-time series Indiana 76-42-6 dating back to 1891 and since the Old Oaken Bucket was introduced in 1925 Purdue leads 62-32-3. This was the 124th meeting between the two teams located 2 hours apart. The Teams did not play in 1895, 1896, 1903, 1906, 1907, 1918, 1919 and 2020. The 1903 game was canceled due to a train wreck that killed 17 Purdue football players coaches and alumni on the Northside of Indianapolis and the 2020 game was canceled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. 

Purdue got the football first and went 8 plays and 53 yards and Mitchell Fineran hit a 29-yard field goal as the Boilermakers took a 3-0 lead with 11:42 left in the first quarter. 39 seconds later Indiana responded as Jaylin Lucas went 71 yards down the left sideline for a touchdown as Charles Campbell added the extra point to give the Hoosiers a 7-3 with 11:02 left in the first quarter. Purdue was forced to punt and the Hoosiers got the ball back to only starting quarterback Dexter Williams II go down with a leg injury and was carted off on a stretcher near the end of the first quarter. Williams was 1-1 for 5 yards and ran the ball 4 times for 9 yards. Connor Bazelak came in to replace Williams and the Hoosiers were unable to convert as Charles Campbell missed a 44-yard field goal.  

The Hoosiers led 7-3 at the break as Indiana had 196 total yards with 166 on the ground and the Boilers had 133 yards of total offense with 113 in the air.  Purdue scored as Aidan O’Connell threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Payne Durham to make it 10-7 with 10:35 left in the third quarter. Devin Mockobee scored on a 27-yard touchdown with 6:06 left in the third quarter to make it 17-7. Charles Campbell had a 36-yard field goal attempt blocked by Kydran Jenkins as Purdue outgained Indiana 164-45 in the third quarter.  In the fourth quarter Charles Campbell hit a 28-yard field goal with 11:06 left to cut the lead to 17-10.  Purdue responded a minute and 28 seconds later with a 60-yard touchdown pass by O’Connell to Charlie Jones as part of three play 75-yard drive as Purdue increased the lead to 24-10 with 9:38 left. Purdue capped it off when Corey Trice intercepted Connor Bazelak and he ran it back 8 yards for a touchdown but missed the extra point to make it 30-10 with 2:17 left.  Indiana scored on a 9-yard touchdown pass from Connor Bazelak to Josh Henderson on the final play of the game. 

Purdue Quarterback Aidan O’Connell was 18-29 passing for 290 yards and 2 touchdown passes. O’Connell’s family released a statement on Sunday that Aidan’s oldest brother Sean O’Connell recently passed away and there has been no information given on cause of death. Devin Mockbee had 15 carries for 99 yards and a touchdown and Charlie Jones had 4 catches for 143 yards and a touchdown. Purdue defense had 3 sacks on the game and had 388 yards off total offense and have won four out of the last five meetings with the Hoosiers dating back to 2017 and it’s the first Purdue win in Bloomington since a 28-21 victory in 2018. Indiana last won in this series back in 2019 with 44-41 in West Lafayette. The Hoosiers last won in Bloomington against Purdue in 2016 with a 26-24 victory. 

Indiana quarterback Connor Bazelak finished with 201 yards passing on 24-42 with an interception and a touchdown pass. Jaylin Lucas had 100 yards on 9 carries with a touchdown. Emery Simmons was the leading receiver with 64 yards on four catches. Indiana finished with 421 yards of total offense as running game had 44 carries for 215 yards and a touchdown. Indiana’s Defense had 3 sacks on the day.

Indiana Volleyball beats Illinois & falls to Maryland to end season
Indiana Volleyball beat Illinois 3-1 and lost to Maryland 3-2 in the final two games of the season last week in Wilkinson Hall. The Hoosiers end the season at 16-16 overall and 9-11 in the Big Ten Conference. Indiana was picked to finish 13th in conference preseason poll and the Hoosiers finished 8th which was the highest conference finish since they tied for 7th place back in 2010. The Hoosiers won 9 games in the conference which is the most since 2010. They won four Big Ten Road matches which is the most since 2009 including their first win against a top five opponent when they beat number 5 Ohio State 3-2 on November 20. An average 1,366 Fans came to watch Indiana Volleyball in Wilkinson Hall this season. The Hoosiers will graduate 4 players including Cerame, Emily Fitzner, Haley Armstrong and Ashley Zulauf but have an experienced group returning for next season with Mady Saris, Savannah Khojhede and Camryn Haworth.

In the Illinois Game the Hoosiers won 25-21, 25-23, 21-25 and 25-20. Freshman Candella Alonso-Corcelles led the Hoosiers with 17 Kills and Morgan Geddes added 16 kills. Camryn Haworth had 45 kills, Paula Cerame had 28 Digs and Kaley Rammelsberg had 5 blocks.  In the Maryland game the Hoosiers lost 25-21, 10-25, 20-25, 25-20 and 8-15. Morgan Geddes and Candella Alonso-Corcelles 13 Kills each Mady Saris 12 Kills Kaley Rammelsberg 5 Blocks and Paula Cerame broke in Big Ten Record for most digs in a single season with 353.
