#4 Indiana Women’s Basketball ties for best start in school history Senior forward Mackenize Holmes posted a double-double and No. 4/3 Indiana thwarted off an upset attempt by Penn State to improve to 10-0 in a 67-58 win at the Bryce Jordan Center. Indiana ties its best start in school history with the victory and are 2-0 in Big Ten play. Indiana started 10-0 in the 2018-19 season. Holmes scored 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Sydney Parrish added 18 points and Chloe Moore McNeil 11 points. Indiana went 27-51 from the field for 53 %, 5-15 from three-point range for 33% and 8-9 from the free throw line for 89 %. The Hoosiers pulled down 37 rebounds, 20 assists, 5 steals, 2 blocks and committed 17 turnovers. Indiana has won 6 straight against the Lady Lions and 10 of the last 11 meetings since 2015. Indiana has a 12-day break for finals before hosting Morehead State Sunday December 18 at 2pm in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
Penn State was led in scoring by Leliani Kapinus with 15 points and 8 rebounds, Makenna Marisa scored 12 points and Alexa Williamson added 10 points. The Lady Lions shots 36% from the field on 23-64 shooting, 4-22 from three-point range for 22 % and 8-12 from the free throw line for 66%. Penn State pulled down 31 rebounds, 14 assists, 8 steals and committed 11 turnovers. Penn State 7-3 overall and 0-2 in the Big Ten.  

#14 Indiana Men’s Basketball faces #10 Arizona in Las Vegas Indiana University continues its 123rd season of competition in men’s basketball as participants in the Las Vegas Clash. The Hoosiers will take on No. 10/9 Arizona in the first ever primetime college basketball game on FOX. Tip is scheduled for 7:30pm Saturday from the MGM Grand Garden Arena.  The Wildcats, led by second-year head coach Tommy Lloyd, enter the game with a 7-1 record. Indiana and Arizona will meet for the first time in the storied history of each program. The Hoosiers are 34-20 all time against teams from the Pac-12 Conference. The program last took on a Pac-12 opponent in a 79-63 victory over Stanford in the 2020 Maui Invitational.

Senior forward Trayce Jackson-Davis recorded the third triple-double in program history with a 12-point, 11-rebound, and 10-assist performance in Indiana’s 81-65 victory over Nebraska on Wednesday. He also added three blocks and three steals. Junior guard Trey Galloway tallied a career-best 20 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the 3-point line in the win. Sophomore guard Tamar Bates charted 19 points off the IU bench, while fifth-year senior forward Miller Kopp paced the starting group with 13 points. 
 
Indiana ranks second among Big Ten Conference (29th nationally) offenses in scoring at 82.1 points per contest on a league-best (third nationally) 52.2% shooting from the floor. The Hoosiers have tallied an effective field goal percentage of 59.2%, the third-highest mark in the NCAA. Arizona leads the country in field goal percentage (55.2%) and effective field goal percentage (59.9%), while ranking second in both assists (21.0) and defensive rebounds per contest. The Wildcats score 91.5 points a game, the third-largest output in the NCAA.
 
Jackson-Davis recorded the third triple-double in Indiana basketball history with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and a career-high 10 assists against Nebraska on Wednesday. He added three blocks and three steals in the win. Jackson-Davis joined historic company of triple-doubles in IU history. Juwan Morgan notched a 10-point, 10-rebound, and 10-assist triple-double against Jacksonville on Dec. 22, 2018. Steve Downing tallied 28 points, 17 rebounds, and 10 blocks against Michigan on Feb. 23, 1971. He is the second player since the start of the 1996-97 season to compile a triple-double with at least three blocks and three steals. Luke Walton accomplished the feat with 27 points, 11 rebounds, 10 assists, four blocks, and four steals against USC on Jan. 17, 2002.

Indiana Men’s Soccer ready to kick off another College Cup campaign
The No. 13-seeded Hoosiers (13-4-6, 3-1-4 B1G) will face Pittsburgh Tonight at the WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C., in an NCAA College Cup Semifinal matchup that is set to kick off at 8:30pm. Fans can watch the match on ESPNU with streaming available on the Watch ESPN digital platform.

  • Indiana is playing in the NCAA Tournament Semifinal round for the 22nd time in program history, an NCAA record. It’s also IU’s fourth NCAA College Cup appearance in the last six seasons.
  • IU will face Pittsburgh in a rematch of the 2020 semifinal that the Hoosiers won, 1-0, via Herbert Endeley’s 79th-minute goal. Endeley has scored game-winning goals in each of IU’s two meetings with the Panthers, a series that only goes back to 2019.
  • Indiana has not conceded a goal through three NCAA Tournament matches, a total of 270 minutes.
  • The winner of Friday’s match will face the winner of No. 3-seeded Syracuse and Creighton on Monday (Dec. 12) in the NCAA College Cup final.
  • The Panthers advanced to the College Cup with a 1-0, double overtime victory over Portland. Pitt previously defeated Cleveland State, No. 16-seed Akron and No. 1 Kentucky in the tournament.
  • With a win, Indiana would become the first NCAA Division-I men’s soccer program to reach 100 NCAA Tournament victories.

ABOUT THE PANTHERS

  • Pittsburgh enters Friday’s match with a 12-4-5 record and a 3-2-3 mark in ACC play. The Panthers have defeated Cleveland State, No. 16 Akron, No. 1 Kentucky and Portland to reach the College Cup.
  • The Panthers are led by Jay Vidovich, who has compiled a 69-54-13 throughout his eight seasons at the helm.
  • Including their tournament wins over No. 16 Akron and No. 1 Kentucky, Pittsburgh has beaten six ranked teams this season. The other ranked wins came over No. 2 Georgetown, No. 6 West Virginia, No. 25 Duquesne and No. 11 North Carolina State.
  • Pittsburgh had five players recognized for All-ACC honors. Senior midfielder Valentin Noel and junior midfielder Filip Mirkovic both were named to the All-ACC First Team. Graduate student Jackson Walti and junior Bertin Jacquesson were named to the All-ACC Second Team while Jackson Gilman earned a spot on the ACC’s All-Freshman Team.
  • Two of those Panthers, Noel and Jacquesson, each have scored more than 20 points. Noel has recorded 25 points from his team-high 11 goals with three assists, as well. Jacquesson has scored eight times and has assisted on five chances to bring his season-point total to 21.

Indiana University Women’s Tennis announces 2023 spring schedule   Indiana women’s tennis head coach Ramiro Azcui has announced the Hoosiers’ 2023 Spring schedule. Indiana will host 12 home matches and compete in 11 on the road. “We’re excited to return to a normal season and to have the opportunity to play a full competition schedule,” Azcui said. “We have four returners and have added two graduate transfers in Lauren Lemonds and Saby Nihalani that will bring us a lot of depth.”
 
The Hoosiers will begin the season at home with three straight home matches beginning with a doubleheader against Butler and Bellarmine on Jan. 16, Cincinnati (Jan. 22) and West Virginia (Jan. 28) at the IU Tennis Center. The team will open up February with a trip to the east coast for a couple of matches at Cornell (Feb. 3) and Yale (Feb. 5). Indiana will return home for a matchup against Xavier on Feb. 11. They will head west for matches against Utah (Feb. 17) and Colorado (Feb. 19). IU will close out the month at the IU Tennis Center with back-to-back matches against Western Michigan (Feb. 25) and Belmont (Feb. 26).
 
Big Ten play will begin on March 5 as Indiana hosts Northwestern. The Hoosiers will continue play at home with two matches against Rutgers (March 10) and Maryland (March 11). During spring break, Indiana will head out west to Las Vegas for a match against the UNLV Rebels.  The Hoosiers will spend the next three weeks on the road against Big Ten opponents in Penn State (March 26), Nebraska (March 31) and Iowa (April 2). IUWT will close out their home slate with Michigan State (April 8) and Michigan (April 9) in Bloomington. The Hoosiers final matches of the season against Purdue (April 15), Wisconsin (April 21) and Minnesota (April 23). “Overall, we are excited about the opportunities of our schedule this year and look forward to the continuous development of our players,” Azcui said.  
The Big Ten Tournament will be hosted by Purdue from April 26-30 in West Lafayette, Ind.

Kyle Schwarber commits to Team USA for 2023 World Baseball Classic Philadelphia Phillies slugger and former Indiana University Baseball player Kyle Schwarber will represent the United States in the World Baseball Classic. The Phillies will now have two representatives at the World Baseball Classic for Team USA with Schwarber joining J.T. Realmuto committing to represent the United States of America as reported by Major League Baseball’s official Twitter account. Schwarber led the National League in home runs this past season with a whopping 46 and will look to swat some shots on the national stage this coming spring. Initially, Bryce Harper was also slated to join the WBC with his teammates, but Tommy John Surgery will keep him away from baseball activities, preventing him from participating in the event. Still, Schwarber has more than enough power for the both of them and is sure to make an impact for Team USA when the Classic kicks off in just a few months March 8-21, 2023.

20 teams will compete in three countries with Japan, Tiawan and the United States hosting pool play. The top two teams in each pool will advance to the quarterfinals with Japan hosting the overseas pools and Miami hosting the United States Pools. The United States will be in Phoenix Arizona hosting Mexico, Colombia Canada and Great Britian and Miami will host Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Israel and Nicaragua. The Semifinals and Finals will be held in Miami March 19-21. Taiwan or Chinese Taipei as it is referred to around the world will host Netherlands, Cuba, Italy and Panama while Japan will host South Korea, Australia, China and the Czech Republic.
