
#6 Indiana University Women’s Basketball wins battle with #9 Maryland The Number 6 Indiana Hoosiers Women’s Basketball team took down the Number 9 Maryland Terrapins 68-61 before a crowd of 5,789 Thursday Night at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. Indiana is 15-1 overall and 5-1 in the Big Ten while Maryland drops to 13-4 overall and 4-2 in Big Ten. Indiana has won three games against Maryland with all three wins coming in the last two seasons and the second straight time the Hoosiers have won against Maryland at home and the other coming in the Quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament in Indianapolis last season. “That was hard played game between two good teams, all wins are good and hard” Head Coach Teri Moren said after the game”.
Sydney Parrish led the Hoosiers with 18 Points with 13 of those coming in the first half. Mackenzie Holmes recorded her fourth straight double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds Yarden Garzon and Grace Berger scored 11 points each. It was Berger’s first home game since coming back from a knee injury this week. Berger hasn’t played a home game since Mid-November since she was hurt against Auburn in Las Vegas. Indiana was 25-49 from the field for 51%, 6-15 from three-point range for 40% and 12-21 from the free throw line for 57 %. Indiana pulled down 37 rebounds, 15 assists, 12 steals, 4 blocks, 32 points in the paint and committed 19 turnovers.
Maryland was led in scoring by Diamond Miller with 19 Points and Brinae Alexander scored 15 points. Abby Meyers who IU fans will remember from the NCAA Tournament run last season when she was at Princeton a season ago scored 9 points and double figure scorer Shyanne Sellers had 9 points. Maryland was 21-57 for 36%, 6-18 from three-point range for 33% and 13-18 from the free throw line for 72%. Maryland pulled down 29 rebounds, 10 steals, 11 assists, 1 block, 18 points in the paint and had 16 turnovers.
This game was a 12 round heavyweight fight and both teams battled to the end. Maryland 20-19 at the end of the first quarter with 6 Ties and 6 Lead Changes. The Hoosiers outscored Maryland 16-7 in the second quarter to take a 35-27 lead into the locker room with just 1 lead change in the second quarter. Maryland. In the second half Maryland fought back and outscored the Hoosiers 15-13 as the Hoosiers used build a 10-point lead and led 48-42 at the end of the third quarter. With the game tied 50-50 with 6:12 left in the game Indiana outscored Maryland 18-11 and outscored the Terps 20-19 in the fourth quarter.
The crowd was a big part of this game and during the game a Maryland player let Mackenzie Holmes know how much of a difference they make. “It was funny that one of their players told me during the game your fans are legit and they are loud” Holmes Said. Holmes said that she is glad to get to play here with a great fan base and be the home team and the energy that they bring for every game. The Hoosiers will host Wisconsin on Sunday at 2 pm and Coach Moren says that this league is too good to get too high or low. “If we enjoy this for 48 hours, we will not be ready for Wisconsin on Sunday and we will enjoy this tonight and get ready for Sunday when they come in tomorrow” Moren said.
Indiana University Men’s Basketball to host Wisconsin Saturday afternoon Indiana University continues its 123rd season of competition in men’s basketball with a home matchup against No. 18/18 Wisconsin at 1 pm on Saturday at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall. The game will be broadcast on CBS. Wisconsin is coming off a 69-65 loss on Tuesday night at home to Michigan State. Steven Crowl led Wisconsin in scoring with 19 points and was without leading scorer Tyler Wahl due to Injury. Whal is averaging 13.2 points per game. Chucky Hepburn averages 13 points per game followed by Crowl at 12.9 and Connor Essegian who graduated from Central Noble HS in Albion Indiana is averaging 10.3 points and was a 2022 Indiana All-Star.
Indiana lost for the third-straight outing in an 85-66 result at Penn State on Wednesday. The Nittany Lions drilled 18 3-point field goals in the game, the most by a Hoosier opponent in the last 25 seasons.  Senior forward Trayce Jackson-Davis posted a 14-point, 11-rebound double-double with four assists and two blocks in the loss.  Freshman guard Jalen Hood-Schifno (11), sophomore guard Tamar Bates (11), and junior guard Trey Galloway (10) all scored in double figures.  Indiana has utilized seven starting lineup combinations through the first 16 games of the season, compared to just four different starting units a season ago.  Junior forward Jordan Geronimo (Jan. 8) and sophomore guard Tamar Bates (Jan. 5) have each earned their first collegiate starts this season.
 
The Badgers, led by eighth-year head coach Greg Gard, sport an 11-4 record and a 3-2 mark in B1G play. The game will mark the fourth ranked opponent for IU this season.  Indiana holds a 96-80 lead over Wisconsin. The Badgers have claimed the win in 24 of the last 27 games in the series dating back to the start of the 2007-08 season.  The Hoosiers fell in a pair of five-point losses to the Badgers a season ago. Indiana held the lead for 63 total minutes in the two games. Senior forward Trayce Jackson-Davis averaged 19.5 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 2.0 blocks in the two games.  Indiana holds a record of 3-16 record all time against a ranked Wisconsin squad when playing as an unranked team. All three victories came in Bloomington with the most recent coming in a 75-73 result on Feb. 26, 2019.  
Indiana to receive almost $60 Million in tax revenue from December sports bets
Indiana’s state-licensed casinos and sportsbooks generated nearly $59 Million in tax revenue in December of 2022, out of more than $431 Million sports bets in the state for the month.
The top grossing casinos were Hard Rock Northern Indiana in Gary, IN who reported an AGR of nearly $33 Million, while Horseshoe Indianapolis in Shelbyville had reported just shy of $28 Million, and Horseshoe Hammond reported about $25 Million. FanDuel was the top sportsbook in Indiana in December, reporting revenues of $16 Million. DraftKings was second, reporting more than $12 Million.
Sports betting revenue is taxed at 9.5% in Indiana, so, they will receive more than $4 million in tax revenue from the sportsbooks. The state’s casinos will pay $50.4 million in wagering taxes and more than $4 million in supplemental taxes. Hoosiers bet $4.4 billion on sports during 2022.
IU Football Freshman Kick Returner Jaylin Lucas earns All-American honor from Football Writers Association
As the dust settles on the 2022 college football season, the Football Writers Association of America has announced that Indiana Freshman Running Back/Kick Returner Jaylin Lucas was named to the publications 32-person Freshman All-America team. Lucas is the first Hoosier to earn Freshman All-America honors from the FWAA since Ted Bolser in 2010 and the third overall (John Kerr, 2002). He is just the second Big Ten kick returner to earn Freshman Honors from the FWAA (K.J. Hamler, Penn State; 2018). He is the first IU return specialist to earn All-Big Ten Honors and the first true Freshman to win the Rodgers–Dwight Return Specialist of the Year (both began in 2015).
The first Indiana Kick Returner to garner All-America status since Marcus Thigpen during the 2006 season. With two return touchdowns, Lucas is No. 2 on both the IU single season and career charts after one season on campus. He trails Thigpen (2005-08), who returned all three of his career kickoffs for scores during the 2006 campaign. His two kickoff return touchdowns rank tied for No. 7 among active FBS student-athletes, as well. With 591 kickoff return yards, Lucas finished No. 12 in a single season in program history and led the Big Ten in the category. His 28.1 yards per return rank No. 4 nationally. He added 271 yards rushing and 82 yards receiving to total 994 all-purpose yards on the season to lead the team.
Indiana University Football player Brylan Lanier enters the Transfer Portal Former Indiana and Alabama defensive back Brylan Lanier has re-entered the transfer portal. The redshirt freshman was a former three-star recruit from the class of 2021. He originally committed, signed, and enrolled at Georgia State but entered the portal 16 days after his enrollment. He transferred to Alabama where he spent one season and saw no time on the field. Then, he entered the portal again shortly after Alabama’s 33-18 national championship loss to Georgia and announced his transfer to Indiana in May of 2022.
Last season for Indiana, he recorded 11 total tackles (eight solo, three assisted), one tackle for loss for 13 yards, and one sack for 13 yards. The Indiana football team went 4-8 last year, including 2-7 in conference play, and finished at No. 12 in the Big 10.
