Indiana University Men’s Tennis beats Dayton and Toledo Indiana University Men’s Tennis beat Dayton and Toledo by 4-1 scores Sunday at the IU Tennis Center to start the season 2-0. The Hoosiers got rolling with two quick wins at doubles to earn the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead.  Luka Vukovic and Ekansh Kumar’s win at No. 3 Doubles plus Sam Landau and Luc Boulier’s win at No. 2 Doubles was enough to give IU the advantage ahead of singles play. In singles play, Ekansh Kumar, Sam Landau and Ilya Tirapolsky won their respective matches to put IU up 4-1 and clinch a victory over the Flyers.

Despite playing two matches in a day, The Hoosiers didn’t look fazed in the slightest. The Hoosiers swept doubles play, winning all three matches without worry. The doubles point gave Indiana the momentum it needed to continue its strong play in singles. Ilya Tiraspolsky, Ekansh Kumar and Luka Vukovic all picked off wins at No. 4, 6 and 2 singles, respectively to give Indiana a 4-1 victory. Indiana will face Middle Tennessee State for its first road test of the season on Friday with a 6 p.m. start.

Zach Edey scores 32 Points to lead #3 Purdue past Michigan State Zach Edey made a go-ahead shot at the front of the rim with 2.2 seconds left and finished with a career-high 32 points and 17 rebounds to help No. 3 Purdue hold off Michigan State for a 64-63 win on Monday. A 51-second sequence earlier in the second half, though, showed just how dominant the 7-foot-4 Edey can be at both ends of the floor. Edey blocked a shot, had an alley-oop dunk, a defensive rebound and a layup to turn a one-point deficit into a three-point lead.

The Boilermakers (17-1, 6-1 Big Ten) have won 17 of their first 18 games, matching a school mark set during the 1987-88 season. The Spartans (12-6, 4-3) dropped a second straight game after winning seven in a row. Tyson Walker put Michigan State ahead with 11 seconds remaining with a mid-range jumper, giving him a season-high 30 points, and Edey scored the winner on the ensuing possession. After Edey’s last basket, A.J. Hoggard’s long inbound pass was knocked out of bounds by Purdue’s Brandon Newman with 1.8 seconds left. That left Tom Izzo with a chance to draw up a play to potentially win the game on Purdue’s end of the court. Walker was set up with what seemed to be an open jumper on the left wing only to have Boilermakers guard Ethan Morton get a hand up to deflect the shot, leaving it short of the rim. Purdue freshman guard Fletcher Loyer had 17 points, including a go-ahead free throw with 25.7 seconds left in a game that had the intensity of a matchup in March.

Loyer’s older brother, Foster, played for the Spartans before transferring to Davidson. Fletcher Loyer, a 6-4 freshman, scored a seasonhigh 27 points Friday night in a win over Nebraska. Joey Hauser added 10 points for the Spartans, who looked like they were going to be overmatched early in the game. Purdue led by 13 points with 5:47 to go in the first half, but was ahead by just two at halftime after Michigan State started to make shots and cut down on turnovers. The Spartans surged ahead by five points early in the second half before both teams took turns with the lead in a closely contested game with 13 lead changes and eight ties.

Indiana Pacers fall to the Milwaukee Bucks on the road Jrue Holiday and the Milwaukee Bucks responded to the Indiana Pacers’ fast start by delivering a dominant performance down the stretch. Holiday scored a season-high 35 points to go along with 11 assists for his third straight double-double and the Bucks rallied to beat the Pacers 132-119 on Monday. The Pacers had led 76-65 at the break after matching their highest first-half point total of the season. Neither team was at full strength. The Bucks played without two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo for a third straight game due to left knee soreness. Indiana was missing leading scorer and NBA assists leader Tyrese Haliburton for a third straight game due to a left elbow sprain and a mild left knee bone bruise.

The Pacers still led most of the way, with Myles Turner scoring 30 points after missing three games with back spasms and T.J. McConnell adding a career-high 29 points including 25 in the first half plus nine assists. Milwaukee eventually handed Indiana its fourth straight loss by outscoring the Pacers 39-21 in the fourth quarter. Holiday scored 21 of his points after halftime to lead the comeback. Holiday shot 13 of 19 overall and 5 of 8 from 3-point range. The Bucks went 23 of 46 from beyond the arc and had their most 3-pointers this season. Holiday is hoping to play in the All-Star Game. Holiday’s lone All-Star appearance came in 2013 with the Philadelphia 76ers.

After falling behind by as many as 13, the Bucks pulled ahead 101-100 on Grayson Allen’s 3-pointer with 10:04 left in the game, the first time the Pacers had trailed since the opening quarter. Indiana responded with consecutive baskets from Andrew Nembhard and Jalen Smith. The game went back-and-forth from there, as the first 4 1/2 minutes of the fourth quarter featured five lead changes. Jordan Nwora’s 3-pointer with 7:40 left put the Bucks ahead for good at 108-107. Indiana led most of the way thanks to the fast start by McConnell, who entered the day scoring just 6 points per game. During his 25-point first half, McConnell shot 9 of 9 from the floor, including 4 of 4 from 3-point range, and 3 of 3 from the free-throw line while playing 17 minutes. Brook Lopez had 19 points, Allen 17 and Nwora 14 for the Bucks. Buddy Hield scored 18 and Bennedict Mathurin added 12 for the Pacers. The Pacers are at Oklahoma City Wednesday Night.

IHSAA Cross Country State Tournaments reduced by one week In its first meeting of the new calendar year, the IHSAA Executive Committee voted to change the Boys and Girls Cross Country State Tournaments from a four-week format to a three-week format. The decision was one of three rules’ proposals acted upon after being formally presented last month by the Indiana Association of Track and Cross-Country Coaches (IATCCC). Two other proposals from the coaches association were unanimously approved including awarding medals to the top 25 finishers in both state meets and creating a common track entry platform that all meets must use throughout the season.

By an 11-6 vote, next fall’s state tournaments will be contested on three consecutive Saturdays and begin one week later than previously scheduled. Next season’s sectionals will now be on Saturday, Oct. 14, regionals on Saturday, Oct. 21, and the state finals on the same.
previously scheduled date of Saturday, Oct. 28. Since 2014, the cross-country tournaments had been run on four consecutive Saturdays with sectionals, regionals, semi-states and state finals. The new format calls for 25 sectionals and five regionals feeding into the state finals while eliminating the semi-state round. The top five teams and top 15 individuals not on a qualifying team will advance from each round to the next. Host sites and sectional assignments will be announced this summer.
