
Teri Moren becomes the winningest coach Indiana University Women’s Basketball History The 6th ranked Indiana Hoosiers beat the 21st ranked Illinois Fighting Illini 83-72 Wednesday night at the State Farm Center in Champaign Illinois. The win makes Teri Moren the all-time winningest coach Indiana University Women’s Basketball history with her 189th win passing Jim Izard won 188 games from 1988-2000. Moren has been the coach at Indiana University since 2014 and has made this program into postseason contender year after year. “It’s a terrific milestone and it’s a snapshot that you will remember for the rest of your life, and I am glad it’s over and we did it tonight and we move forward” Head Coach Teri Moren said after the game.
Mackenize Holmes scored 30 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double in the last six games. Grace Berger added 18 points. Yarden Garzon added 13 points while Chloe Moore-McNeil added 12 points and 6 assists. Sydney Parrish scored 8 points, Lilly Meister added 2 points while Lexus Bargesser and Sara Scalia played but did not score. Indiana was 30-55 from the field for 55%, 5-13 from three-point range for 35 percent and 18-24 from the free throw line for 75%. IU now leads the series 49-30 and have won 15 straight against the Illini. The last lost came February 23, 2013, in Champaign 73-60.
Illinois was led in scoring by Genessis Bryant with 18 points, Kokomo Indiana native Kendall Bostic had 17 points and 11 rebounds. Makira Cook added 14 points, Adalia McKenzie added 15 and Bryn Shoup-Hill scored 8 points. Illinois was 28-64 from the field for 43%, 5-15 from three-point range for 33 % and 11-15 from three-point range for 73%. The Illini are 15-4 on the season and 5-3 in the Big Ten Conference. ” What a great turnaround Illinois and coach Green has done over there and i have been in the league nine years and never seen a crowd like that, we knew it was going to be a dogfight and our staff did a great job and preparing for this game and great to have Grace Berger and it’s a great win for us and program” Moren said after the game.
Illinois led 21-20 in the first quarter. Indiana outscored the Illini 19-10 in the second quarter and took a 37-31 lead into the locker room. Indiana outscored Illinois 30-20 leading 67-51 after three quarters. Illinois outscored Indiana 21-16 in the final quarter but the Hoosiers hold on to sweep the season series for the Illini. The Hoosiers are 17-1 on the season and 7-1 in the Big Ten with a Monday Night showdown at Michigan at 8pm.
Indiana Men’s Basketball travels to Illinois looking for its first Big Ten road win Indiana University continues its 123rd season of competition in men’s basketball with a rivalry matchup at Illinois at 8:30pm this evening at the State Farm Center. The game will be broadcast on FS1. Indiana who are 11-6 overall and 2-4 in the Big Ten jumped back into the win column with a 63-45 triumph over No. 18/18 Wisconsin on Saturday afternoon. The win marked the second ranked victory of the season for IU and the largest margin of victory over WIS since Feb. 24, 2001, when the Hoosiers won 85-55. Senior forward Trayce Jackson-Davis (18 points, 12 rebounds) and junior forward Jordan Geronimo (12 points, 11 rebounds) each recorded double-doubles in the victory. TJD has posted three-straight double-doubles for the second time this season, while Geronimo converted his second career double-double. Freshman guard Jalen Hood-Schifino added 16 points, five rebounds, and four assists.
Trayce Jackson-Davis is the only active player in the country to tally at least 1,800 career points, 900 career rebounds, and 200 career blocks. In the last 25 seasons, only 22 players have achieved those numbers in college basketball. Three (Kyle Hines; UNCG, Shawn Long; ULL, and Nathan Knight; WMU) have produced those numbers on a higher career scoring average. Jackson-Davis is one of two Power 5 players (Zach Edey; Purdue) to average at least 17.0 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game this season. He is 4th in school history with 935 rebounds, 2nd with 219 blocks and 6th with 39 double-doubles. Indiana holds a narrow 94-91 lead over Illinois. A season ago, the Hoosiers pulled off an upset over top-seeded Illinois in the quarterfinal round of the 2022 Big Ten Conference Tournament. Senior forward Trayce Jackson-Davis compiled 21 points, seven rebounds, and three assists in the tournament victory. Head coach Mike Woodson scored a career-high 48 points in IU’s 72-60 win at Illinois on March 3, 1979. He averaged 24.1 points per game in his six contests against the Illini. Indiana last defeated Illinois in the regular season on March 7, 2019. IU won 92-74 in Champaign.
The Illini, led by sixth-year head coach Brad Underwood, enter the matchup with a 13-5 record and a 4-3 mark in B1G play. Illinois has won four-straight games after a 78-60 win at Minnesota Monday Night. Four different Illini finished with double figures, 10 different players registered at least two points, and the defense came to play once again in the 18-point victory. The win was the team’s fifth consecutive win over the Golden Gophers. Illinois outscored Minnesota by 15 points and held the Golden Gophers to 27.6 percent and just eight field goals in the second half in the win. The Illini commanded the paint, out-rebounding Minnesota, 50-29, which included 14 offensive rebounds and a season-high 36 defensive rebounds. Illinois took advantage by scoring 14 second-chance points and seven fast-break points, while the Illini scored 54 points in the paint. Matthew Mayer registered his first double-double of the season with a game-high 19 points and 10 rebounds. Mayer also made two blocks and one steal while shooting 57 percent from the floor and 50 percent on 3-point attempts. Dain Dainja scored 11 points, his second straight double-digit scoring night of the year. Dainja grabbed four rebounds and made two assists and one block, while he converted five of his six field-goal attempts. Terrence Shannon Jr. recorded 11 points, four rebounds, four assists, and one steal, while Jayden Epps tallied 10 points, two rebounds, two blocks, and one assist off the bench.
Indiana University Women’s Soccer names Hanna Sullivan new assistant coach replacing Emily Basten                                             Head coach Erwin van Bennekom expresses his gratitude to Emily Basten for her dedication and service to the Indiana women’s soccer program while announcing a new addition to his staff in Hannah Sullivan. “Emily has been a support to me and has had a huge influence on the program over the last seven years,” van Bennekom said. “First as a student athlete, graduate assistant and in the last few years as an assistant coach.”  Basten spent six seasons with the Hoosiers, most recently serving as an assistant coach and the team’s recruiting coordinator. She is an alum of the program after transferring to IU for her senior year in 2015. Basten served as a graduate assistant for two seasons in 2017 and 2018 and became the team’s volunteer assistant in 2019.  In 2020, Basten earned a full-time position on van Bennekom’s coaching staff as an assistant coach. She continued to build upon her role within the program and create opportunities for growth. In her first season, Basten helped lead the Hoosiers to their best season in program history with a 6-5-1 record, tying the number of wins in the program. “I want to wish Emily all the best in her career outside of the game, and we all know she will be extremely successful. She will forever part of IUWS.”
 
Sullivan will begin where Basten left off by continuing to produce growth within the program, players and the sport. “We are very excited to welcome Hannah Sullivan to our program,” van Bennekom said. “She will serve as an assistant and goalkeeper coach and will be involved in all aspects of the program. During the hiring process, Hannah’s drive, competitiveness, expertise in training of the goalkeepers and her personality stood out in the hiring process. It very quickly became clear that she was the best fit for our program!”  
In her most recent role, Sullivan served as an assistant coach at Ball State under head coach John Rife. Her responsibilities included recruiting, travel and team operations. “I am very excited to become a part of the IU family,” Sullivan said. “I want to thank Erwin for giving me the opportunity to join this experienced and accomplished staff.”  In 2022, the Cardinals went 7-5-8 on the year. They shutout six opponents and made it to the Mid-American Conference Championship. Prior to Ball State, Sullivan helped lead Marian University to a program record of 21 wins during her first season with the Knights in 2021.
 
Sullivan played collegiate soccer at Indiana State where she was a four-year member of the Sycamores soccer program from 2016-19. She appeared in 43 matches making 39 starts. Sullivan finished her career ranked fifth in program history with 177 career saves. She held a 1.57 career goals against average that is ranked second in program history but is the best an ISU goalkeeper has played in one season between the posts.  A Fishers, Ind., native, Sullivan was a standout goalkeeper at Fishers High School, helping lead the team to three IHSAA Semi-State appearances, including a 2014 State Championship and a 2013 state runner-up finish. She was named all-state honorable mention honors, along with earning first team all-district accolades, during the 2014 championship run. As a senior in 2015, she finished the year with 17 shutouts and 0.3 goals against average. Sullivan helped guide her club team, the Indy Premier Soccer club, to a pair of state championships. She also played for the Olympic Development Program in 2013 and 2014. 
“Having a supportive and strong environment in the locker room is key and I am motivated to assist in the continued growth of the established culture,” Sullivan said. “I am ready to get started and look forward to working with this talented Indiana team and dynamic group of goalkeepers.” Sullivan graduated in 2020 from Indiana State with a Bachelor’s in communications and a coaching minor. She earned her Master of Arts in Public Relations with Sport Administration from Ball State in 2022.
Indiana University Track and Field’s Jake Gebhardt named Big Ten Men’s Track athlete of the week                                           Following an outstanding weekend at the Commodore Challenge, Indiana graduate student and distance runner Jake Gebhardt was tabbed the Big Ten’s Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced on Wednesday afternoon. The Sterling, Ill. native raced to a pair of victories and personal bests in the 800 meters and the Mile at the Commodore Challenge on Saturday to begin his 2023 campaign.
 
Gebhardt broke into the sub-4-minute mile club alongside teammate Camden Marshall with a winning mark of 3:59.18. His time moved him into No. 9 in program history and made him the 10th runner to break four minutes in an IU uniform. To follow that up, he ran a Big Ten-leading time of 1:51.85 to win the 800 meters just 90 minutes after the conclusion of the Mile.  He becomes the first Hoosier to win a Big Ten Men’s Cross-Country Athlete of the Week and Indoor Track Athlete of the Week honor in the same season since Kyle Mau did so in 2019.  Gebhardt is the first men’s athlete to win the conference’s weekly honor since Rikkoi Brathwaite’s record-setting weekend in December of 2021.  He finished 16th at the Big Ten Cross Country Championships this fall and will figure to be a strong runner at multiple distances during the track season.
Former IU Men’s Soccer players Roman Celentano and Adian Morris earn US Men’s National Team call-ups                                           The United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) is kicking off the 2026 FIFA World Cup cycle with a pair of Hoosiers.  Former Indiana men’s soccer student-athletes Roman Celentano and Aidan Morris received their USMNT senior call-ups on Wednesday the U.S. Soccer Federation announced. The duo will join 24 total players participating in January training camp with the USMNT beginning January 21 as the federation begins preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The slate will include friendlies against Serbia on January 25 and Colombia on January 28. Celentano and Morris, both under 23 years of age, have yet to earn their first senior team caps.
 
Celentano completed his rookie season in 2022 with FC Cincinnati after took over the starting role and made 27 starts. A two-time Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Year at IU, Celentano helped lead FCC to the club’s first MLS Cup Playoff appearance, in which he started the club’s lone, first-round match.  Morris is set to begin his fourth season with Columbus Crew in February after signing a homegrown contract with the club following his 2019 freshman season in Bloomington. Morris also appeared in 27 matches for his club last season. In October, Morris was called-up to the United States U-20 Men’s Youth National Team training camp. Eighteen Hoosiers have earned caps for the USMNT, most recently Lee Nguyen in 2016.
