
Top Seed Indiana Women’s Basketball to face Nine Seed Michigan State in Big Ten Tournament Quarterfinals Top seed Indiana will face 9-seed Michigan State in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal at Target Center this afternoon. Tipoff is set for 12:30pm on Big Ten Network. Michigan State has won five of its last six including a 67-64 victory over Nebraska in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament. All-Big Ten honorable mentions in graduate student guard Kamaria McDaniels leads the way with 13.7 points per game while sophomore guard/forward Matilda Ekh adds 12.3 points per outing. In 28 years competing in the postseason tournament, the Hoosiers are 22-29 overall and ninth year head coach Teri Moren holds a record of 7-9. The Hoosiers have won one tournament championship in 2002 and are coming off its second championship game appearance in 2022. Indiana holds 1-2 record against the Spartans in tournament action and last met in the 2021 tournament in Indianapolis where the No. 2 Hoosiers fell to the No. 7 Spartans, 69-61.
Head coach Teri Moren was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year while senior forward Mackenize Holmes was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year as six Hoosiers pulled in All-Big Ten awards. Moren becomes the first coach in program history to repeat as the Big Ten Coach of the Year, an honor she also picked up in 2016. Holmes becomes the first player in program history to win the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year award. Holmes (unanimous) and graduate student guard Grace Berger were first team selections while junior guard Chloe Moore-McNeil earned second team honors from the media and honorable mention from the coaches and joined Holmes on the All-Defensive team. Junior guard Sydney Parrish earned All-Big Ten honorable mention honors while freshman guard Yarden Garzon joined her on the All-Big Ten honorable mention team and was on the five-member All-Freshman team. Senior guard Sara Scalia was given the nod on the honorable mention team by the media. Moore-McNeil was the team’s sportsmanship award honoree. Four players are averaging double figures for the Hoosiers, behind 22.5 points from Holmes. Berger and Parrish each add 12.4 points per game while Garzon adds 11.3 points per game.
Indiana and Michigan State played just once this season in late December. The Hoosiers suffered their first loss of the season in East Lansing on Dec. 29, 83-78. Senior forward Mackenize Holmes dropped a then career-high 32 points and 12 rebounds. While the Hoosiers shot 58.5 percent, they were forced into a season-high 21 turnovers in the loss. The winner of today’s game advances to the Big Ten Tournament semifinal on Saturday at 2:30pm against the winner of 5 seed Michigan and 4 seed Ohio State.
Indiana University Men’s Basketball celebrates Senior Day Sunday The #15 Indiana Hoosiers will host the Michigan Wolverines in the final Big Ten Regular season game at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall on Sunday afternoon with tip-off scheduled for 4:30pm on CBS. It will be Senior Day as the Hoosiers will honor Xavier Johnson, Miller Kopp, Race Thompson and Trayce Jackson-Davis in traditional post-game ceremonies in which the seniors Head Coach Mike Woodson will address the crowd. Jackson-Davis could have come back for his fifth season after all athletes were given an extra year during the COVID-19 Pandemic but announced after the Illinois game that he will enter the 2023 NBA Draft. Walkons Nathan Childress and Michael Shipp are Seniors and could go through senior day Sunday if they chose not to come back next season for a final season.
Indiana is 20-10 overall and 11-8 in the Big Ten. The Hoosiers are coming off a 90-68 loss at home to Iowa Tuesday Night. Head Coach Mike Woodson was not happy with the way his team played Tuesday Night and IU fans went to the exits early after being ran out of their own building. Indiana still has a chance to get a double bye in next week’s Big Ten Tournament in Chicago, but the Hoosiers need a lot of help to secure the double bye. Michigan will be coming off a Thursday Night game at Illinois. Eight teams are battling for three of the four Double-Byes in the Tournament as Purdue has already clinched the Big Ten Title and top seed in the Tournament.
Boys Basketball Sectional Semifinals tonight with Championship games Saturday The IHSAA Boys Basketball Sectionals are taking place all over the state with Sectional Semifinals tonight and Championship Games Saturday Night. All four Monroe County are alive after Lighthouse Christian, Bloomington North and Edgewood all won their Sectional openers earlier this week. Bloomington South 16-8 had a bye and will face Center Grove 21-2 in the first semifinal at 6 pm in Class 4A at Center Grove. Bloomington North 16-5 will take on Martinsville 9-13 at 7:30pm after the Cougars beat Mooresville 101-58 Tuesday Night. The Winner’s will meet in the Championship at 7:30pm Saturday night.
In Class 3A at Northview HS. Edgewood 10-14 will take on South Vermillion 9-15 in the Second Semifinal at 7:30pm. Edgewood beat West Vigo 68-59 Wednesday Night. The first semifinal will see Indian Creek 12-8 take on 9-15 Northview at 6pm. The Championship game is scheduled for 6:30pm Saturday Night.
In Class 1A at White River Valley Lighthouse Christian 16-7 will take on North Central Farmersburg 12-11 in the first semifinal at 6pm. The Lions won their first ever sectional game in just their third year of playing in the State Tournament after beating Shakamak 60-50 Tuesday Night. Game 2 will feature 7-17 White River Valley taking on 22-3 Bloomfield at 7:30pm. The Winners will face off at 7pm Saturday night.
Bloomington North and Bloomington South compete in Girls Gymnastics Regional at Franklin Central Bloomington North and Bloomington will compete at 6:30pm this evening in the IHSAA Girls Gymnastics Regional at Franklin Central. Bloomington North won the Sectional at Franklin Central with a team score of 107.735, Columbus North was second with 106.800 followed by Bloomington South with a score of 101.800. Edgewood finished 10th with a score 87.775. Reese Euler from Columbus North won the Valut and Bars along with the All Around and Austyn Dykes of Franklin Central won the Beam and Floor Exercise.
They will be joined by New Palestine, New Castle and Rushville who finished in the top three of the Connersville Sectional with New Palestine taking home the title. New Palestine won four of the five events with Senior Addyson Kendall winning the Bars, Sophomore Jillianne Fee winning the Beam and the Floor and Freshman Lynzie Stiller winning the All Around. Freshman Hailey Hensley of New Castle won the Vault. The Top Three Teams and Top Six in each event plus the All-Around Advance to State Finals.
Trayce Jackson-Davis named to Oscar Robertson Trophy late season watch list Indiana senior forward Trayce Jackson-Davis was named to the 2022-23 Oscar Robertson Trophy Late Season Watch List, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) announced on Thursday. Since the 1958-59 season, the USBWA has named a National Player of the Year. In 1998, the award was named in honor of the University of Cincinnati Hall of Famer and two-time USBWA Player of the Year Oscar Robertson. It is the nation’s oldest award and the only one named after a former player.
Jackson-Davis leads Indiana in scoring (20.3 points per game), rebounds (11.1), and blocked shots (2.8). He is tied for the team lead with 103 assists this season. He is currently on pace to be the program’s first 20-point-per-game scorer since Eric Gordon (20.9) in 2007-08. His rebounding numbers have not been produced by a Hoosier since Steve Downing (15.1) in 1971-72. TJD ranks third in the Big Ten Conference in scoring, second in rebounds, first in blocks, second in double-doubles, and ninth in assists. He is fourth in field goal percentage and third in made free throws this season.
Over the last 25 years of basketball only Jackson-Davis (Jan. 2023), Tim Duncan, and Shaquille O’Neal have averaged at least 23.0 points, 14.0 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game in a calendar month (min. 5 games) in Division I basketball or the NBA. TJD became the fifth player in Big Ten history to record 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds earlier this season, joining Joe Barry Carroll (Purdue), Ethan Happ (Wisconsin), Greg Kelser (Michigan State), and Herb Williams (Ohio State). Jackson-Davis and Zach Edey (Purdue) are the only high-major players to average at least 20.0 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game this season. Heading into the final game of the regular season, Jackson-Davis holds the school records for both career rebounds (1,093) and career blocked shots (252). He ranks fourth in career scoring (2,136) and career double-doubles (48).
