Local Sports Headlines: March 10, 2023

Indiana University Baseball comes from behind to beat Bellarmine in series opener For the first time in 2023, the Indiana baseball team rallied from a deficit after six innings in a 5-3 victory over Bellarmine on Thursday at Bart Kaufman Field. A single run in the third inning and two runs in the fifth pushed Bellarmine (5-8) out to a 3-0 lead. Indiana (7-6) got a run back in the seventh inning and then scored four runs in the eighth for the comeback victory. Freshman Brayden Risedorph (ND) made his first career start and allowed one unearned run over four innings of work. He allowed four hits, did not issue a walk, and struck out four batters. Freshman Evan Whiteaker struck out three over 2 2/3 innings scoreless innings of work out of the bullpen.

With a scoreless eighth inning of work, freshman Connor Foley (1-0) earned his first career win and sophomore Ryan Kraft (3) allowed a single in the ninth but shut the door for his third save of the season. The offense hat just five hits over the first six innings and stranded six runners during that span, before senior Peter Serruto hit a solo home run to left field in the seventh inning. IU had four hits and six total base runners over the final two frames. Sophomore Brock Tibbitts provided a pair of hits in the contest with one RBI and redshirt junior Bobby Whalen’s lone hit was a two-RBI double down the right field line to give IU the lead. Freshman Tyler Cerny provided the insurance run with a sacrifice fly. Seniors Phillip Glasser (two hits) and Hunter Jessee (three hits) both posted multi-hit games, while freshmen Josh Pyne and Carter Mathison each walked to start the eighth inning and scored.

Bellarmine starting pitcher Nolan Pender (ND) fired seven one-run innings with five strikeouts. He exited after allowing seven hits – six of those singles – with two walks and five strikeouts. Matt Craven (1-2) took the loss with four runs allowed on two hits and two walks in one inning. Peyton Back drove in all three RBIs for the Knights with a pair of hits. Dylan Byerly and Tommy Dilz each had three hits in the game, and Reed Blaszczyk had two hits and scored two runs. Indiana and Bellarmine continue the series with a single game this afternoon. Indiana University Women’s Basketball Head Coach Teri Moren named Semifinalist for Coach of the Year Indiana head coach Teri Moren been named a 2023 Werner Ladder Naismith Women’s Coach of the Year semifinalist, announced by the organization on Thursday. In her ninth season at the helm of Indiana, she has led her squad to a multitude of new program first and record setting numbers in the 2022-23 season. With a 27-3 overall record and a first-place finish in the Big Ten this season, its first regular season title in 40 years, with a mark of 16-2 mark. Indiana is the only team nationally to have nine top 25 wins this season, five of which came against top 5 opponents and currently rank fifth in the NET.

They rank in the top 10 nationally in five team categories, highlighted by its 50.4 field goal percentage, which is third amongst all Division I teams. Indiana is second in field goal percentage (49.8), fourth in scoring margin (+19.2), sixth in scoring offense (81.5), seventh in assist-to-turnover ratio (+1.42) and seventh in assists per game (18.3). The Hoosiers have been ranked in both national polls consecutively for the last three seasons and are No. 2 in the WBCA/USA Today coaches poll and No. 3 in the Associated Press Top 25. On Jan. 18 in a win at Illinois, Moren became the program’s all-time winningest coach with 189 career victories. She holds a current record of 199-92 (.683) in her nine seasons leading the program. Moren was also named the 2023 Big Ten Coach of the Year, her second league honor as she also earned the selection in 2016.  Indiana awaits the 2023 NCAA Women’s Basketball Tournament selection show on Sunday Night at 8pm on ESPN. 

Trayce Jackson-Davis named finalist for Karl Malone Award The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame announced the five finalists for the 2023 Karl Malone Award, including Indiana senior forward Trayce Jackson-Davis on Thursday. Named after Class of 2010 Hall of Famer and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Karl Malone, the annual honor in its ninth year recognizes the top power forwards in Division I men’s college basketball. The Selection Committee for the Karl Malone Award is composed of top men’s college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, sports information directors and Hall of Famers. Fans can support their favorite players in the remaining rounds by participating in Fan Voting, presented by Dell Technologies, starting Friday, February 10, on hoophallawards.com. The Fan Vote will count as one committee vote during the finalist selection process.

Jackson-Davis ended the regular season averaging 20.5 points (2nd among Major Conference players), 11.0 rebounds (4th), 3.8 assists (2nd among players 6’9 and taller), and 2.8 blocks (3rd) per game. His 16 double doubles ranked fifth among Major Conference performers. TJD was one of two high-major players (Zach Edey; Purdue) to average at least 20.0 points, 11.0 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game in the regular season. Jackson-Davis posted 25 points, seven rebounds, and five blocked shots in Indiana’s 79-74 victory over No. 1/1 Purdue on Feb. 4. He became the first player to produce at least 25 points and five blocks in a win over the AP No. 1 team since Marcus Camby in UMass’ win over top-ranked Kentucky on November 28, 1995.

On Jan. 25 he compiled 25 points, 21 rebounds, and six blocked shots against Minnesota. The game marked the first 20-20 game from a Hoosier since D.J. White on Jan. 8, 2008. He also became the first high-major player to post a 25-20-5 game since UConn’s Hasheem Thabeet on Feb. 14, 2009. In a Dec. 7 victory over Nebraska, he recorded the third triple-double in Indiana basketball history with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and a career-high 10 assists. He added three blocks and three steals in the win to become the first player in men’s college basketball to post a triple-double and at least three blocks and three steals since Luke Walton (Arizona, 2002).

The winner of the 2023 Karl Malone Award will be presented on a to be determined date, along with the other four members of the Men’s Starting Five. Additional awards being presented include the Bob Cousy Award (Point Guard), Jerry West Award (Shooting Guard), Julius Erving Award (Small Forward) and the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award (Center), in addition to the Women’s Starting Five. Previous winners of the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award include Keegan Murray, Iowa (2022), Drew Timme, Gonzaga (2021), Obi Toppin, Dayton (2020), Zion Williamson, Duke (2019), Deandre Ayton, Arizona (2018), Johnathan Motley, Baylor (2017), Georges Niang, Iowa State (2016) and Montrezl Harrell, Louisville (2015).

Mackenize Holmes named 2023 Jersey Mike’s Nasmith award Semifinalist Indiana senior forward Mackenzie Holmes has been named a semifinalist for the 2023 Jersey Mike’s Naismith Women’s College Player of the Year. Holmes is averaging a team-high 22.3 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game, while shooting 68.8 percent from the field. She is joined on the 10-player semifinalist list by South Carolina’s Aliyah Boston; Stanford’s Cameron Brink; Iowa’s Caitlin Clark; UConn’s Aaliyah Edward; Iowa State’s Ashley Joens; Virginia Tech’s Elizabeth Kitley; Utah’s Alissa Pili; LSU’s Angel Reese; and Villanova’s Maddy Siegrist.

This season, the third-ranked Hoosiers won their first Big Ten regular-season title since 1983 and finished with a 27-3 overall record. Indiana lost to Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals, and now await its NCAA Tournament seeding on Sunday evening. 

Indiana University Women’s Basketball Assistant Coach Glenn Box named to ABIS Women’s Basketball watch list Indiana associate head coach Glenn Box has been named to the 2023 Advancement of Blacks in Sports assistant/associate coach watch list. The list includes the NCAA’s top Black men’s and women’s head and assistant coaches from across the country. This year’s list features 26 head coaches and 40 rising assistant coaches from midlevel and major NCAA programs as recognized by their peers as some of the best in the business. Those nominated are considered to be the year’s most deserving, qualified, and prepared Black coaches in the NCAA to elevate their careers to the next level.  This ABIS Black Coaches Watchlist is shared annually with athletic administrators and executive search firms in efforts to highlight their contributions as the hiring cycle for men’s and women’s basketball begins.

Box is in his seventh season with the program and his third as associate head coach. In his seven seasons, nine Hoosier guards have earned a total of 15 All-Big Ten honors including four-straight All-Big Ten first team honors for graduate student guard Grace Berger. Five Hoosier guards earned All-Big Ten honors this year including Berger, junior guard Chloe Moore-McNeil Freshman guard Yarden Garzon junior guard Sydney Parrish and senior guard Sara Scalia He is instrumental in the team’s defensive success, including this season where the team leads the Big Ten holding 62.3 points per game and shooting just 38.9 percent from the floor. Senior forward Mackenize Holmes became the program’s first Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year in 2022-23 as Holmes and Moore-McNeil each earned spots on the league’s All-Defensive team. In all, four players have placed on the league’s annual postseason all-defensive team under Box, including four of the seven all-time honors in program history. He has helped the Hoosiers to a WNIT Championship and three NCAA Tournament appearances.
