Indiana University Women’s Basketball Head Coach Teri Moren Wins AP and Kay Yow Coach of the Year awards

Indiana head coach Teri Moren has been named the 2023 Associated Press Coach of the Year. Moren received the award in a ceremony at American Airlines Arena in Dallas on Thursday afternoon. The Seymour, Indiana native is the program’s first Associated Press Coach of the Year. In her ninth season at the helm, she led her squad to a multitude of new program first and record setting numbers in the 2022-23 season. She guided the Hoosiers to a school record 28 wins with a 28-4 overall record and a first-place finish in the Big Ten. They claimed their first regular season title in 40 years, with a mark of 16-2 mark. Indiana posted wins over nine top 25 foes this season, five of which came against top 5 opponents. Moren was also named the 2023 Kay Yow Award winner, presented annually to the Division I women’s head college basketball coach who embodies a winning spirit while displaying great character, on and off the court.

“It’s impressive anytime you do something, which hasn’t happened in 40 years, but Teri Moren did a lot more than just lead the Indiana women to a Big Ten regular season title,” said Angela Lento, Vice President of CollegeInsider.com. “It was a season of firsts for Indiana women’s basketball and Coach Moren is a very deserving winner of National Coach of the Year honors.”

Hoosier students asked to Get ShakIN’ on earthquake safety in video contest
The Indiana Department of Homeland Security’s Get ShakIN’ video contest continues through August even though Earthquake Awareness Month ends Feb 28. Sitting close to two seismic zones, both with the potential of producing major quakes, Hoosiers need to Get ShakIN’ when it comes to earthquake preparedness. The Get ShakIN’ competition will provide the top schools with their own Raspberry Shake® RS3D seismograph and a chance to join IDHS in promoting earthquake safety.

The contest ends Aug. 21, 2023. Indiana will celebrate with the winning school on “Indiana Earthquake Awareness Day” in October, near the time of the Great Central U.S. ShakeOut.

Student groups or classes can enter by submitting a student-produced video focused on earthquake preparedness and/or safety. A panel of judges from IDHS will select the Top 10 videos to win a seismograph, and an overall winner will be selected to receive a seismograph plus the grand prize: an “Indiana Earthquake Awareness Day” event and a visit by the Quake Cottage simulator (if available).

Additional information about the video contest and earthquake safety is on the Get ShakIN’ webpage (on.in.gov/get-shakin).

This Week in Hoosier History

1925 – Radio station WOWO in Fort Wayne first signed on the air on March 31, 1925, with 500 watts at 1320 kilocycles. The year before, musicians had gathered in the home of Harold Blosser at 2708 South Wayne Avenue for an experimental radio broadcast, which included an opera singer from Bluffton, the Allen County treasurer who did some old-time fiddling, and others. Using a five-watt transmitter, the broadcast had a limited range, but it was a hit. Fred Zieg, owner of the Main Auto Supply store in downtown Fort Wayne, had been looking for a way to promote the sale of Dayfan radios. He was pleased to receive hundreds of calls following this experiment. Kneale D. Ross, a salesman at the store, convinced Zieg that for $150 he could build a radio station above his store at 213 Main Street—WOWO was born. A listener contest came up with the slogan “Wayne Offers Wonderful Opportunities.”
