Hoosier Fiber Networks, GigabitNow, and City Provide Update on High-Speed Fiber Project
Mayor John Hamilton and representatives from Hoosier Fiber Networks and GigabitNow will meet in the South Griffy neighborhood (https://bton.in/4mU-Y) for exciting updates on the high-speed fiber project. Construction of the new city-wide network first began in the South Griffy neighborhood in late 2022. GigabitNow will soon begin offering service to homes physically connected to the network and continue as construction progresses throughout the city.

The City of Bloomington and Hoosier Fiber Network’s digital equity program will help low-income and digitally-disadvantaged households access top-quality internet services. Eligible low-income residents may qualify for the Affordable Connectivity Plan (ACP) to receive at least a symmetrical 250 megabits per second (Mbps) plan at reduced — or no cost to the user if ACP is applied. The City and Hoosier Fiber Networks will together provide the “drop” connection to qualifying households.

Meridiam announced on September 13 its partnership with GigabitNow as the primary ISP (Internet Service Provider) under the Hoosier Fiber Networks agreement with the City (https://bton.in/0lATD). Under the Hoosier Fiber Networks agreement with the City, GigabitNow is the exclusive ISP for at least a five-year term. After the exclusivity period ends, the network may become a full open-access network, open to other ISPs, including local providers, for the lifetime of the network.

Trashion Refashion 2023 Presented by Plato’s Closet Celebrates Creative Eco-Action at Buskirk-Chumley Theater Sunday April 16
On Sunday, April 16, Bloomington Trashion Refashion 2023, presented by Plato’s Closet, returns live on stage at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. A flagship of the Bloomington arts and entertainment scene since 2010, the annual Trashion Refashion runway show gathers town and gown, artists and environmentalists at the intersection of imagination and sustainability. The 14th Annual Trashion Refashion Show, once again held at Bloomington’s landmark performance venue, will highlight over 70 original looks upcycled from discarded items by local artists and modeled by a diverse troupe of community residents. This fundraising event to support the  Center for Sustainable Living, features two runway shows of locally made couture sure to inspire the fashion creatives lurking inside us all.

Starting at 7 p.m. (doors opening at 6:30 p.m.) Bloomington Trashion Refashion 2023 presented by Plato’s Closet takes place Sunday, April 16 at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater, at 114 E. Kirkwood Avenue in Bloomington. General admission tickets for the all-ages show are available for $15 in advance, $20 day of show, and $10 for children and students at the BCT box office or on its website at https://web.ovationtix.com/trs/pe.c/11001619

The Trashion Refashion runway show promotes environmental sustainability and artistic creativity while challenging conventional notions about beauty and consumerism. Each of the juried show’s designs consists of at least 90% discarded materials, either rescued from the waste stream (Trashion) or transformed from underutilized garments (Refashion). In the designs on parade, lonely piñatas past their prime, defeated football pads, empty onion bags, and castoff t-shirts and jeans are reimagined as everything from easy-to-wear to haute couture. The show’s designers are broadly representative of the Bloomington community from university students to local artists to environmental activists.  The show is also committed to cultivating diversity among its models with regard to gender, age, race, body type and other categories.
