
Indiana University Softball extends its winning streak to 22
No. 19 Indiana (29-9, 8-0 B1G) defeated Western Kentucky (21-13, 6-3 C-USA) in a shutout victory, 3-0, at the WKU Softball Complex on Tuesday evening. Sophomore Taylor Minnick got the offense started with a base hit through the left side scoring Bassett in the top of the first for the lead. Freshman Taryn Kern went yard for the 16th time this season as she earned two RBI extending the Hoosier lead, 3-0 in the top of the second inning. The Hoosier defense stood strong holding the Hilltoppers to only three batters in the second and third innings. WKU put two runners on base with back-to-back singles in the bottom of the fifth, but sophomore Brianna Copeland would strikeout the next batter to escape the inning. Indiana’s defense held strong as they concluded the game with another 1-2-3 inning highlighted from another stellar, diving grab from Kern in the outfield.
Indiana continues their record-breaking win streak with a program high of 22 wins. Kern hit her 16th career home run to tie IU Hall of Famer and Olympian Michelle Venturella for most home runs in a single season. Copeland holds a 13-0 record inside the circle while teammate Heather Johnson picked up here third save. IU outhit the Hilltoppers 6-4 for their fifth shutout this season. Indiana prepares for series against at Minnesota tomorrow through Sunday.
Indiana University Men’s Track and Field’s Camden Marshall named Big Ten Athlete of the Week
A Big Ten and NCAA-leading time of 3:39.51 in the 1500 meters earned Indiana’s Camden Marshall Big Ten weekly honors as announced by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon. Marshall was selected as the Big Ten Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, the first weekly honor from the conference in his career. The Corydon, Ind. native ran the invite section of the 1500 meters at the Pepsi Florida Relays last Friday in Gainesville, clocking the fastest time in the nation this season. An impressive kick down the final straightaway and a 55.4 split over the final 400 meters sent Marshall past his fellow collegians across the finish line. He shaved nearly three seconds off his personal best and moved into seventh in program history in the event. He is one just two athletes in school history (Jim Spivey and Mark Deady) with top-10 school marks in both middle-distance events (800 meters and 1500 meters).
Marshall is coming off an impressive indoor season that saw him run 1:47.47 (800m) and 3:57.56 (mile) in the regular season before leading off IU’s First Team All-American Distance Medley Relay team at the NCAA Indoor Championships. He has made all three finals he’s contested in the 800 meters at the Big Ten Championships over the past two seasons and will be a threat to score in either the 800 meters or 1500 meters at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships in Bloomington this May. He joins Jake Gebhardt (XC and ITF) as Hoosiers to win Big Ten weekly honors this school year. Gebhardt and Marshall also lead the Big Ten in the 5000 meters and 1500 meters respectively this outdoor campaign. Marshall is set to run the 800 meters this weekend at the Tennessee Invite in Knoxville before going back up to 1,500 meters at the prestigious Bryan Clay Invite in two weeks.
Indiana University Women’s Water Polo’s Sophia Sollie named MPSF player of the week
Indiana Sophomore center Sophia Sollie has been named the MPSF Player of the Week, announced by the league on Tuesday. Sollie scored four goals on seven shots to help No. 19 Indiana defeat No. 15 Arizona State, 11-7, on Saturday inside Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center. It was the first win over the Sun Devils since 2005 and first MPSF win of the season for the Hoosiers. This is the first weekly award for Sollie and first weekly award winner since 2021. The Murrieta, Calif. native has scored 33 goals, five steals and two assists this season for the Hoosiers, who are currently 15-11 overall and will host Michigan on Saturday in its regular season home finale.
Indiana University Baseball loses midweek battle at Indiana State
Life on the road can be tough and for the Indiana baseball program that was the theme on Tuesday at Indiana State in a 4-0 loss. Indiana State (15-12) struck for a single run in the third and sixth innings to take the early lead and added two more in the seventh to cap the scoring. Indiana (20-9) was shutout for the first time in 2023. Senior Phillip Glasser was on base three times to move his reached base streak to 29 games to open the season. He singled and walked twice in the contest. Sophomores Carter Mathison and Brock Tibbitts each chipped in two hits. Freshman Cooper Katskee (0-1) was the losing pitcher with one run allowed over 1 1/3 innings of relief. Junior Brooks Ey tossed two scoreless innings with four strikeouts and freshman Brayden Risedorph struck out one in one inning of work. Randal Diaz and Luis Hernandez each homered for Indiana State, while Cameron Holycross (2-0) picked up the win with 4 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Indiana Fever announce 2023 Preseason Schedule
The Indiana Fever announced Wednesday the team will play two preseason games ahead of the 2023 regular season. They are Sunday, May 7 at Chicago Sky at 6pm and home in Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Saturday, May 13 vs. Dallas Wings at 1pm. Tickets for the home preseason game against Dallas at Gainbridge Fieldhouse and the entire 2023 regular season home schedule will go on sale Monday, April 10. Additional information can be found by visiting Indiana Fever Ticket Central. The Fever will begin the 2023 regular season on Friday, May 19 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse against the Connecticut Sun at 7 p.m. ET. For the fourth consecutive season, the Indiana Fever will continue to livestream games for fans statewide, as well as in Ohio and Kentucky, on the Indiana Fever’s Official Facebook account. The full broadcast schedule will be released ahead of the regular season.
Indianapolis Indians game at Louisville postponed due to weather
The Indianapolis Indians have announced that their matchup last night at Louisville has been postponed due to inclement weather. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader at Louisville Slugger Field today with Game 1 scheduled for 5:05pm and Game 2 will begin 30 minutes following the conclusion of the opener, with both games set as seven-inning affairs. The Indians kicked off their first road trip of the 2023 season Tuesday as they began a six-game series with the Bats. Louisville won the series opener, 7-2. The Indians lost all three games to Omaha Storm Chasers over the weekend at Victory Field.
