White River boating accident claims life of Indianapolis man (Marion County)
Indiana Conservation Officers are investigating a boating accident that occurred yesterday on the White River in Indianapolis. At approximately 7:30pm, conservation officers responded to the area of the river near Raymond Street for the report of a capsized boat. Before they arrived, units from the Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD), Wayne Township Fire Department, and Indianapolis Metro Police Department rescued William Henson, 31, of Indianapolis, from the water, where he had been holding onto his capsized boat.

IFD Divers also rescued Martez Lamont Proctor-Cortez, 32, of Indianapolis from the water and transported him to Eskenazi Health Hospital; however, he was later pronounced dead. Both men had been fishing when the boat capsized, throwing both into the water. Investigators have determined that the small watercraft was overloaded and could not safely navigate the river current. Proctor-Cortez was not wearing a life jacket.

Indiana Conservation Officers urge everyone to wear a lifejacket when boating or around water.

Attorney General warns churches and other nonprofit organizations to beware cyberattacks
Attorney General Todd Rokita today warned Hoosiers to be alert to the possible rising incidence of cyberattacks on churches and other nonprofit organizations.

“Hackers regularly carry out attacks on companies and governmental offices,” Attorney General Rokita said. “Now, though, we’re seeing signs that cybercriminals are expanding their lists of targets.”

On April 30, data extortioners struck a national Catholic publishing house based in Huntington, Indiana — one day after a ransomware group attacked an evangelical megachurch in South Carolina. Attorney General Rokita offered the following tips:

  • Be on alert for communications with dangerous attachments or fraudulent links.
  • Always verify the email addresses of those who send you emails.
  • Don’t reveal personal or financial information via email or text message.
  • Encourage regular and updated cyberattack training for organizations’ employees, members and volunteers.
  • Ensure that your organization has updated appropriate software patches and that it monitors current schemes and scams by hackers.
  • Avoid using gift cards, money orders or cryptocurrency to conduct transactions or regular organization business.
