Message from Director of Indiana Emergency Medical Services
The Indiana EMS staff, executive leadership of IDHS as well as the Indiana EMS Commission want to extend a warm recognition for all EMS-certified professionals during National EMS Week (May 21-27). Governor Eric J. Holcomb also proclaimed this as Indiana EMS Week.EMS clinicians are “where emergency care begins,” as noted by this year’s theme. You are in the communities, responding to calls for assistance, stabilizing those in need and advancing patient care further into the healthcare system. We are proud to support EMS personnel across Indiana with a primary goal of extending the best possible medical care to all Indiana patients. Indiana EMS providers and IDHS also propel EMS toward growth and change with partners such as the Indiana Department of Health and Indiana University Bowen Center for Health Workforce Research and Policy.2023 has been a great year thus far for EMS. For the first time in legislative history, EMS has been allocated specific funding, which will be critical to completing a comprehensive workforce study, supporting scholarships and training for new recruits, an interfacility transfer study and a continued focus on mobile integrated healthcare. But while this week is a celebration of all things EMS, the core foundation of Indiana EMS is the 24,500 certified or licensed EMS professionals here in Indiana providing prehospital care. EVERYONE plays a role. From first responders on the ground to air medical providers transporting someone for life-saving care (and everyone in between) … we are all Indiana EMS.Whether volunteer or paid or part-time or full-time or rural or urban, we are all EMS.Take this week to continue to dedicate yourself to the EMS system and accept thanks for all that you do. Let another EMS provider know they are appreciated. Reflect and celebrate. You may not save a life every day, but you certainly make a difference. Happy EMS Week from our team to yours!
Sincerely,
Kraig Kinney
