Big Ten, BIG EAST Announce Schedule for 2023 Gavitt Tipoff Games
Annual Early-Season Series Includes High-Profile Matchups
The BIG EAST and Big Ten Conferences have announced the matchups for the eighth Gavitt Tipoff Games, with eight men’s basketball contests set for November 13-17. Game times will be announced at a later date.  All games will be televised on FS1. The Gavitt Tipoff Games is a unique early-season series played between the two conferences and named in honor of Hall of Famer Dave Gavitt, founder of the BIG EAST and basketball visionary. The annual series, which is played on school home courts, features games between some area opponents as well as some attractive intersectional matchups.

  • Monday, Nov. 13, with Xavier traveling to Purdue and Michigan meeting St. John’s at Madison Square Garden. 
  • Tuesday, Nov. 14, a tripleheader includes Wisconsin at Providence, Marquette at Illinois, and Iowa at Creighton.    
  • Wednesday, Nov. 15. Georgetown plays at Rutgers. 
  • Gavitt Tipoff Games play concludes on Friday, Nov. 17, when Maryland visits Villanova and Butler plays at Michigan State. 

Ivy Tech offering welding classes in Morgan County
Ivy Tech Community College Bloomington is offering Welding courses at Martinsville High School this summer. Classes start June 5 and will run for eight-weeks. MIG Welding will be held on Tuesdays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and TIG Welding will be held on Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Welding classes could be free with the state’s Next Level Jobs grant for students who qualify. There are no pre-requisites and classes are open to anyone seeking welding training. Future plans include the opportunity to earn a full Structural Welding certification entirely in Martinsville. More classes will also be offered this fall at both Martinsville High School and in Mooresville, Ind. Classes will continue to be held on Tuesday or Thursday evenings in Martinsville and classes will be held on Wednesday evenings in Mooresville.

Tax Filing Extensions for Designated Disaster Counties
Filing extensions have been granted to specific counties in Indiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, New York, California, Alabama, and Georgia due to severe and damaging storms.

Indiana To Receive $1,350,700 in Funding from the National Endowment for the Arts
The Indiana Arts Commission has been approved for a $1,031,200 National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Fiscal Year 2023 State & Regional Partnership Agreement to address priorities identified at the state level. These funds will support the arts in areas such as community and economic development, cultural tourism, education, and health and human services.  The State & Regional Partnership Agreement grant awarded to the Indiana Arts Commission from the NEA will be utilized to positively impact Indiana’s cultural, economic, and educational climate through regranting and other programming in service of arts and creativity in the state.   

In addition to the State & Regional Partnership Agreement grant to the Indiana Arts Commission, the NEA announced the following grants to Indiana communities and organizations:   

  • American Cello Institute, Inc. (Bloomington, IN), $17,500 – Grants for Arts Projects – Music 
  • American Folklore Society, Inc. (Bloomington, IN), $40,000 – Grants for Arts Projects – Folk & Traditional Arts 
  • Center for the Performing Arts, Inc. (Carmel, IN), $12,000 – Grants for Arts Projects – Presenting & Multidisciplinary Works 
  • American Cabaret Theatre, Inc. (Indianapolis, IN), $15,000 – Grants for Arts Projects – Presenting & Multidisciplinary Works 
  • Artmix Inc. (Indianapolis, IN), $30,000 – Grants for Arts Projects – Visual Arts 
  • Arts Council of Indianapolis, Inc (Indianapolis, IN), $35,000 – Grants for Arts Projects – Local Arts Agencies 
  • Flanner House of Indianapolis, Inc (Indianapolis, IN), $75,000 – Our Town – Design 
  • Indianapolis Shakespeare Company, Inc (Indianapolis, IN), $20,000 – Grants for Arts Projects – Theater 
  • Arts Place, Inc. (Portland, IN), $75,000 – Our Town – Design  

The next deadline for organizations interested in applying for Grants for Arts Projects is Thursday, July 6, 2023. For organizations interested in applying for Our Town, the deadline is Thursday, August 3, 2023. Visit arts.gov for guidelines and application resources. 1824 – Ambrose Everett Burnside was born in Liberty, Indiana. He was a three term Governor of Rhode Island, an American army officer and he popularized sideburns.
