Three Former Indiana University Men’s Basketball players start NBA Summer League action
Three former Hoosier All-Big Ten selections will compete in the NBA 2k24 Summer League 2023 held in Las Vegas starting this Friday and going through July 17. Jalen Hood-Schifino the 17th overall pick by the Los Angeles Lakers, will make his summer league debut as part of the California Classic against the defending Eastern Conference champion Miami Heat at 6pm this evening on ESPN2.

Trayce Jackson-Davis, who was selected 57th overall by the Washington Wizards and then traded to the Golden State Warriors, opens his NBA preseason with a California Classic matchup with the Sacramento Kings at 10pm this evening on ESPN.

Race Thompson signed a deal to participate with the New York Knicks in the Summer League. Thompson will debut against the Philadelphia 76ers. New York Knicks Schedule-July 8 vs. Philadelphia at 5 p.m. on NBA TV, July 9 vs. Brooklyn at 5:30 p.m. on NBA TV, July 12 vs. Orlando at 8 p.m. on ESPN2 and July 14 vs. Boston at 7 p.m. on ESPN2. The NBA Summer League tournament on July 15 with a champion crowned on July 17.

Two Indiana University Wrestling Athletes medal at the 2023 Central American and Carribean Games
Indiana Wrestling’s Jacob Moran and Indiana RTC Resident Athlete Max Lacey both medaled in freestyle competition at the 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games on Saturday. Moran, a rising senior for Indiana Wrestling, competed at 57 kg for Puerto Rico while Lacey competed at 97 kg for Costa Rica. Moran won the third-place match to take bronze at 57 kg. He secured a late takedown in the final ten seconds of the bout to earn a win of VPO1, 3-2. This was Moran’s first time reaching the podium in international competition at the senior level. Lacey racked up two wins on his way to the final of the 97 kg bracket before taking silver in the tournament for Costa Rica.

The field of Moran and Lacey’s competitors included athletes from Barbados, Colombia, Cuba, The Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Suriname, The Bahamas and Venezuela.

Indy Bison Red shuts out the Southern Indiana Bobcats for the second time
The Southern Indiana Bobcats Semi Pro Football team was shutout for the second consecutive game in a 24-0 loss to the Indy Bison Red Saturday Night at Beaver Materials Field in Noblesville Indiana. The Bison Red beat the Bobcats 20-0 on June 10, at Edgewood HS.  The Bobcats fall to 2-3 on the season while the Bison Red improve to 3-3 overall.

The Bobcats Defense had 4 sacks by Noah Ponce, Mason Scott, Corey Motosicky and Tyrell Williams. Cantrell Harris had 2 interceptions. Tyrell Williams forced a fumble while Moses Morgan recovered the fumble. Cantrell Harris had 1 carry for 7 yards and punted 4 times for an average of 20.2 yards. The Bobcats Offense struggled as 10 players carried the ball 26 times for negative two yards and 9 times, they were tackled for a loss with two of those being sacks and 7 times held for no gain and two fumbles. The quarterbacks combined for 3-11 for 40 yards passing with 3 interceptions.  Jaden Evans caught a Tavaras Rochell pass for 28 yards and Rasool Saadiq threw a 7-yard pass to Parker Osborn and 5 yards to A.J. Liner.  Giovanni Muse threw 2 interceptions and Sean Simmons threw one.

The Offense had just 38 yards of total offense with two first downs for the entire game. The Bobcats were 1-10 on third down conversions and 0-3 on fourth down conversions. In the First Half the Bobcats had 15 total yards of offense. The Bobcats ran a total of 37 plays and only three times were they more than 3 plays and those all came in the second half.

The Bison Red scored twice in the second and fourth quarters. In the Second Quarter. The Bison scored on a 1-yard touchdown with 10:23 to go before half to make 6-0 and then scored on a 22-yard touchdown pass with no time left to make it 12-0. In the fourth quarter the Bobcats were at their own 13-yard line when Rasool Saadiq was sacked, and the ball came out and the Bison picked it up and scored with 12:31 left to make it 18-0. The Bison added a 1 touchdown run with 2:13 left to close out the game. The Bison were 0-3 on two-point conversions and 0-1 on point after attempts. The Bison finished with 226 yards of total offense on 60 plays and had 108 in the first half. The Bison carried the ball 36 times for 128 yards and a touchdown and were 9-23 passing for 98 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

The Bobcats were to host the Dayton Seminoles on Sunday afternoon at Edgewood HS, but that game has been canceled due to the Seminoles ceasing operations for the rest of the season. The Bobcats will get a 2-0 forfeit win and push their record to 3-3 on the season with four regular season games left. The Bobcats are planning to have an intersquad scrimmage as a replacement to the game with details to be announced later in the week.      

Indiana University Swimming ends Phillips 66 National Championships in dominant fashion
Indiana University Swim Club’s (ISC) Lilly King completed her sweep of breaststroke titles on Friday at the Phillips 66 National Championships in front of a home crowd inside the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis. King won the 100-meter breaststroke in 1:04.75, her first time under 1:05 since Olympic trials in 2021. King was around six tenths of a second from her world record 1:04.13, set at the 2017 World Championships.

Current IU student-athlete Josh Matheny doubled his duties at the Fukuoka 2023 World Aquatics Championships this July, qualifying in the 100-meter breaststroke on Friday with a second-place finish. His 59.20 set a personal best, beating his previous 59.44 set in his long course national title a year ago. Matheny previously qualified for his first senior World Championships in the 200-meter event on Wednesday.

Of Indiana’s 10 final swims on Friday, seven were in the 100 breast and six Hoosiers finished top 13 in that event. Like Matheny, ISC’s Cody Miller also swam under a minute, going 59.85 to finish fourth. Training Partner Annie Lazor (1:07.77) finished sixth in the women’s event, while IU juniors Maxwell Reich (1:00.88) and Jassen Yep (1:01.08) placed 10th and 13th, respectively, for the men. Breaststroke U completed a dominant week at the long course championships, collecting five world qualifying bids, six medals and 10 top-10 finishes between the three distances.                                                                                             

Indiana University Wrestling signs transfer Danny Fongaro
Indiana head coach Angel Escobedo has announced the team’s signing of transfer Danny Fongaro. Fongaro comes to Bloomington after spending five years at Columbia. He only competed in three seasons after taking a Greyshirt year in 2019-20 and the entire Ivy League cancelled all athletic competition in 2020-21. In his three years on the mat, Fongaro wrestled at 141 and 149 lbs. and was a consistent force in the lineup for the Lions.

Most recently in 2022-23, Fongaro competed at 149 lbs. and had a 16-16 season with two wins by major decision and one pin. He took sixth place at the EIWA Championships while his team took fourth. The Lions went 6-7 in dual action. In January 2023, Fongaro reached No. 33 at 149 lbs. in national rankings. In 2021-22, he had a 20-12 record with 10 wins by major decision. He took fifth place at the EIWA Championships. As a true freshman in 2018-19, Fongaro went 16-13. His career record stands at 52-41 entering the 2023-24 season. Fongaro is a Lincoln City, N.J. native and attended Boonton High School. He graduated from Columbia as an Economics major. He will attend the Maurer School of Law at IU.

Indiana Fever drop final game of a three-game road trip to the Phoenix Mercury
The Indiana Fever (5-10) fell to the Phoenix Mercury, 85-63, to conclude the longest road trip of the season at Footprint Center. Ten of Indiana’s 12 players who took the floor on Thursday ended the matchup against the Mercury contributing to the scoring column, highlighted by Kelsey Mitchell’s 15 points. NaLyssa Smith followed behind as she added 10 points on 4-of-9 shooting and pulled down nine rebounds. Kristy Wallace led all reserves in scoring as she pitched in nine points, while Erica Wheeler tallied eight points. Aliyah Boston, Wheeler and Mitchell each contributed four assists in the loss. In addition, the Fever shot 90 percent (9-of-10) from the free throw line in the matchup.

The Mercury opened the matchup with an 11-4 scoring run within the first three minutes of play. Indiana kept the lead within reach with the help of Mitchell, who contributed 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting, while Smith and Boston each added four points and three rebounds in the first frame. After its highest scoring first quarter of the year, Phoenix led Indiana, 31-23. In the second quarter, Indiana shot 5-of-21 from the floor and went into the locker room trailing Phoenix, 52-35. Phoenix maintained the advantage throughout the third quarter, extending the lead to as large as 24. Smith guided the offense as she contributed six points and pulled down five rebounds, while Wheeler added five points. Indiana finished the third frame still chasing Phoenix, 72-51. In the fourth quarter, Wallace and Maya Caldwell pitched in five and three points, respectively, and Former IU Star Grace Berger added two points in 5 minutes of action with one assist and one block in her first game playing after missing the first two games of the road trip due to injury.

For Phoenix, the Mercury were led in the wire-to-wire win by center Brittney Griner’s 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the floor. Diana Taurasi pitched in 17 points and dished out six assists. Brianna Turner contributed 11 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting clip, while Moriah Jefferson and Michaela Onyenwere added nine points each. The Mercury collectively shot a season-high 53.1 percent (34-64) from the floor as all 10 players who took to the court for Phoenix contributed to the scoring column. Nine Phoenix players contributed to record a season-high 28 assists.
