Two Indiana University Baseball players selected in the MLB Draft
For the third straight season, the Indiana baseball program heard at least one of its student-athletes names called within the first 10 rounds of the draft, as senior Phillip Glasser and redshirt senior Craig Yoho were each selected in the 2023 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft on Monday. With the two selections, Indiana has had 105 Hoosiers drafted all-time for a total of 116 total draft picks. Yoho was the third Hoosier to be picked by the Brewers in program history, while Glasser is the third IU pick by the Nationals all time. The duo gives head coach Jeff Mercer eight student-athlete selected in the top-10 rounds of the MLB Draft over four seasons. For the fifth time in the last six seasons, Indiana has had a pitcher drafted in the top 10 rounds. Overall, IU has had multiple Hoosiers drafted for the 15th time in the last 16 MLB Drafts. With Yoho’s selection, 12 of the 21 draft picks under Mercer have been pitchers.
After four injury-plagued seasons to begin his collegiate career, a position change led to a breakout season for Yoho. With 1,082 days between collegiate appearances, Yoho made his IU debut on February 21 with two scoreless innings and five strikeouts against Miami (Ohio) and went on to 37 innings with just 33 hits allowed and 63 strikeouts. He was named the 2022-23 Indiana Athletics Andy Hipskind Comeback Award winner. In 18 appearances in relief, the right-hander collected four wins, one hold and one save on the year. Two of his three wins came in Big Ten play, while his save was part of a combined shutout at Northwestern (5/5) in the series opener. He did not allow a run of his own in 10 of 18 appearances and stranded seven of 13 inherited runners. Limiting the free bases was a big part of his success, as he issued two-or-fewer walks in all 18 appearances, with zero walks in six outings. He also struck out five-or-more batters in six relief outings and struck out at least one batter in 17 of 18 appearances.
Glasser is the first IU shortstop drafted since Ethan Wilson in 2010 and the highest drafted shortstop for the Hoosiers since Brian Harris was picked in the eighth round in 1997. He appeared in 228 career games with 225 starts in his five-year collegiate career, with 110 of those starts at shortstop in two seasons at Indiana. A career-year at the plate led to second-team All-Midwest Region honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association and second-team All-Big Ten accolades. His 70 runs scored are tied for No. 7 on the single season charts with Mickey Morandini (1988) and his 95 hits rank tied for No. 5 on the single season list with Jerrud Sabourin (2010). The left-handed hitter owned three 20-plus game reached base streaks in his Indiana career, including a career-long streak of 45 games which spanned Feb. 17-April 30, 2023, which tied the longest by an IU hitter since at least 2005 (Dustin DeMuth; 2014). He reached base safely in 61 of 63 games and reached base multiple times on 41 occasions. With a hit in in 49 of 63 games, his season-best hitting streak spanned 13 games from April 11-April 30. He posted 32 multi-hit games, 10 multi-RBI games and 19 multi-run scored games on the year and hit .300 or better in 10 of 14 regular season weekend series played, including five of eight Big Ten weekends.

Indiana Pacers improve to 2-0 in the Las Vegas Summer League
The Indiana Pacers Summer League squad is continuing to fire on all cylinders in Sin City. Indiana (2-0) led 57-34 at halftime and never looked back en route to a 108-85 blowout victory over the Orlando Magic (0-2) in Las Vegas on Monday. All five Pacers starters finished in double-digit scoring on the night, as the team shot 48.2 percent from the field while holding the Magic to 40.5 percent shooting.
Pacers second-year guard Andrew Nembhard dazzled, orchestrating an impressive stat line of 21 points (8-for-16 shooting), seven assists, three rebounds and three steals, while Benedict Mathurin, who is also entering his second season, also continued to shine, registering 17 points, six assists and three rebounds. Indiana third-year big Isaiah Jackson registered his second straight double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds and rookie Jarace Walker, the eighth overall pick in 2023 from Houston, had 16 points, four assists and four rebounds for the Blue & Gold. Rookie Ben Sheppard, the No. 26 overall pick from Belmont, also had his best night so far, totaling 16 points (3-for-7 3-point) and nine rebounds.
The Pacers led by six points after the first quarter before pushing it to as many as 26 points in the second by outscoring the Magic 34-17 in the frame. From there, the Magic couldn’t get their deficit to under double digits. In the first half, Nembhard made six of nine shots for 16 points including 12 points in the second quarter – to go along with five assists, while Mathurin had 10 points and four assists.
Indiana’s rookies scored eight of the team’s first 10 points, with Sheppard opening the game with a 3-pointer in the corner before Walker flushed a dunk and added a trey of his own to tie the score four minutes in. A 9-1 Pacers run, behind five different scorers, then spurred the Blue & Gold to a 19-13 advantage with 1:45 left in the first quarter. A layup by Oscar Tshiebwe and free throws by Isaiah Wong, both rookies, then helped Indiana to a 23-17 at the end of 10 minutes of play.
After a slow start, Mathurin got going to start the second quarter by scoring five quick points to force an Orlando timeout. Baskets by Jackson, Walker, and a 3-pointer by Nembhard then extended the Pacers’ run to 12-0 and the lead to 35-18 with 7:04 left in the half.
A basket by the Magic’s Robert Baker II stopped Indiana’s scoring spree, but the Pacers responded with 3-pointers by Nembhard and Kendall Brown to push the lead to 43-22 with 4:13 left in the half. The Pacers didn’t let off the brakes from there, bolstering the lead to 57-34 at intermission.
Out of halftime, Caleb Houstan scored nine straight points for the Magic including seven in-a-row off a 3-pointer and then a four-point play – to cut it to 61-43 with 7:12 left in the third quarter. The Pacers responded with a 7-0 run thanks to free throws from Mathruin and baskets by Walker and Jackson, to make it 70-45. Orlando was able to marginally cut into the lead, but the Pacers went into the final frame up 78-62. The teams traded baskets to start the fourth quarter before an 8-3 mini run, spurred by a Sheppard trey, put the Pacers up 91-72 with 6:25 remaining. The Magic never got closer than 15 points from there. Houstan led the Magic with 18 points and rookie Jett Howard, the No. 11 overall pick from Michigan, had 10 points and five assists. Guard Anthony Black, the sixth pick from Arkansas, finished with eight points, seven rebounds and three assists.
