
Indiana University Women’s Basketball dominates Greek All-Stars in first game of their tour of Greece
Even on the other side of the world, Teri Moren and the Indiana women’s basketball team can’t stop winning. The Hoosiers defeated the Greek All-Stars team 120-50 on Thursday to kick off the team’s first foreign tour in six years. Indiana’s trip to Greece started on Tuesday and will continue through Next Thursday. The Hoosiers were led by Sydney Parrish, who finished with a game-high 22 points and six made threes. Additionally, Sara Scalia finished with 15 points and five made threes, while sophomore Lexus Bargesser finished with 17 points and eight made field goals. Freshman Jules LaMendola also made a strong first impression, finishing with 15 points and six made field goals, and UT Martin transfer Sharnecce Currie-Jelks put together a stellar debut performance, scoring 15 points on 7-for-9 shooting.
Indiana came out with a starting lineup of Scalia, Parrish, Bargesser, Chole Moore-McNeil and Lilly Meister. First team All-American center Mackenzie Holmes did not play in the game, and sophomore Yarden Garzon came off the bench. As a whole, the team made a whopping 16 threes in their 70-point victory, with 11 coming from the veteran duo of Scalia and Parrish. Indiana won all four quarters of the game, outscoring the Greek team 32-16 in the first, 29-9 in the second, 37-20 in the third and 22-5 in the fourth. Indiana will play one more game on its foreign tour, traveling next to the Greek city of Patras.
Indiana University Women’s Golf announces 2023-24 season schedule
Second-year head women’s golf coach Brian May announced the Indiana 2023-24 schedule on Thursday morning. The slate includes 10 regular season tournaments, with five coming in both the fall and spring portions of the calendar. “We are excited to get going this fall,” said May. “We have changed some things up in our schedule and will be playing more golf early in the season than in years past. We have a hungry group of players including six new faces. They are extremely competitive and ready to take on the challenge this season!”
The Hoosiers will maintain a busy month of September with three tournaments to kick off the fall slate. IU will open the year at the Purdue Boilermaker Classic from Sept. 4-5 at the Kampen Course in West Lafayette. Indiana will continue the northern trek with a three-day tournament in Madison, Wis. at the Wisconsin Badger Invitational from Sept. 17-19 before closing the month at the Class City Invitational at the Iverness Club from Sept. 25-26 in Toledo, Ohio. The fall season will conclude with a pair of callback tournaments with the Evie Odom Invitational from Oct. 6-8 at the Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach, Va., and The Ally Invitational from Oct. 23-25 at the Old Waverly Golf Club in Starkville, Miss.
The spring slate opens with a dual match against border-rival Louisville at the Pelican Bay Golf Club in Naples, Fla. on Jan. 16. The February slate features the FAU Paradise Invitational (Feb. 5-6) at the Osprey Ridge Golf Club in Naples, Fla., and the Houston ICON Invitational (Feb. 26-27) at the Golf Club of Houston. Indiana will see one event, the Florida State Match-Up, in the month of March. The team will take on the Seminole Legacy Club from March 15-17 in Tallahassee, Fla. From there, IU will head east for the Lady Buckeye Invitational from April 13-14 on the Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio. Postseason play will begin with the Big Ten Championships at the Bulle Rock Golf Course in Havre De Grace, Md. from April 21-23. The NCAA Regionals will be held from May 6-8 before the NCAA Finals from May 14-22 at La Costa Resort in Carlsbad, Calif.
13 Indiana University Softball players named Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes
Thirteen Hoosiers were recognized as 2022-23 Easton/NFCA All-America Scholar-Athletes when the awards were announced on Wednesday. In order to qualify for the award, a student-athlete has to maintain at least a 3.5 GPA throughout the entire academic year.
The following Indiana players earned the national distinction: Aaliyah Andrews, Cora Bassett, Brooke Benson, Brianna Copeland, Desiree Dufek, Chloe Geijer, Tatum Hayes, Heather Johnson, Sophie Kleiman, Macy Montgomery, Avery Parker, Elle Smith and Lindsey Warick
As a team, the Hoosiers had an excellent year in the classroom in addition to an outstanding year on the field. The team’s cumulative GPA for the 2022-2023 school year was 3.477. Indiana’s 2023 season featured a 44-18 record, a Big Ten Championship appearance and reaching the final round of the NCAA Regional in Knoxville, Tenn.
Southern Indiana Bobcats close out the regular season Saturday Night at Edgewood HS
The Southern Indiana Bobcats Semi Pro Football Team will host the Columbus Gladiators Saturday Night at 7 pm at Edgewood HS in the final regular season game. Tickets are available at the gate for $10 as all active and veterans of our armed forces along with kids 17 and under get in for free. The game theme is Ohana Night. Ohana is the Hawaiian word for family and fans are encouraged to wear the favorite Hawaiian Shirts although if you asked a native Hawaiian like head coach Daniel Ponce, he would tell you that they are Aloha Shirts.
The Game is Homecoming Night for Eight Edgewood Graduates on the team as the Bobcats close out the season as first year organization and first time that a Semi Pro Football Team has played home games at Edgewood since 2017. Chris Brummett, Daniel Kimbro, Moses Morgan, Andre Adkins, James Klyzcek, Greg Geiselman, Josh Kimbro, Blair Boruff and assistant coach Jesse Spurgeon will be taking the field at their alma mater along with several Bobcats on the team that graduated from Bloomington North, Bloomington South, Eastern Greene and Owen Valley. Special Olympics of Monroe County will be in attendance doing a Flag Football Scrimmage at Halftime.
The Bobcats are 3-6 on the season and coming off a 30-8 loss to the Cincinnati Dukes last Saturday on the road. The Bobcats finished the road portion of the schedule 2-3 with a win over the Kentucky Spartans down Owensboro Kentucky June 3, as the second win was by forfeit to the Columbus Bredren Knights. The Bobcats have a forfeit win to the Dayton Seminoles at home but they are looking to close out the regular season with a home win as they have lost to the Indiana Tornados, Indy Bison Red and Kentuckiana Calvary all on the red turf this season. The Bobcats have scored 72 points on the season and have given up 156 points.
The Columbus Gladiators are 7-1 on the season with their only loss coming on July 8, on the road against the Indiana Tornados 20-12. The Gladiators have put up 112 points this season and given up 57 points. The Gladiators sit second in the Eastern Conference of the Blue-Collar Football League behind the unbeaten Cincinnati Dukes and have a showdown at home with the Dukes next week.
The Bobcats are in the fourth and final spot for the playoffs in the BCFL Western Conference. The Lexington Bengals is 2-5 and Kentucky Spartans 1-7 on the season. The Bobcats win this game and will be in the playoffs. The Bobcats have a win over the Spartans as part of the head-to-head tiebreaker. The Bobcats and Bengals did not meet in the regular season, but the Bobcats have scored more points than Bengals in the regular season if the two teams would finish tied at the end of the regular season.
Bedford Little League Baseball representing Indiana at the LLWS Great Lakes Regional
For the first time in its Little League Baseball History the Bedford Little League are Indiana State Champions at the 9–12-year-old level and are playing at the Little League Great Lakes Regional in Whitestown Indiana for a chance to go to the Little League World Series in Williamsport Pennsylvania later this month. Bedford won the Indiana State Tournament by beating HYR (Floyd Central) 3-2 in the championship in Jeffersonville. Bedford went 3-0 in district play with wins over Martinsville, Franklin and Greenwood. Bedford beat Jeffersonville, Wabash, Brownsburg and Floyd Central to win the state title. Bedford has outscored its opponents 33-1 in district play and 22-11 in state tournament play for a total 55-12 with a 7-0 record.
The Great Lakes Regional has five teams represented that are State Champions from Illinois, Michigan, Kentucky and Ohio and it’s a double elimination format. Bedford will play at 7pm Saturday Evening against Elmhurst Illinois. The winner advances to a Monday Night game while the Loser plays at 7pm Sunday Night against the loser of the Midland Michigan and New Albany Ohio game while the Winner of that game plays Lexington Kentucky on Sunday at 4pm.
The Midwest Regional Tournament is going at the same time on the same field as Johnston Iowa, Pittsburg Kansas, Coon Rapids Minnesota, Webb City Missouri, Kearney Nebraska, Fargo North Dakota, Sioux Falls South Dakota and Shorewood Wisconsin are competing for a trip to Williamsport.
Whitestown is located Northwest of Indianapolis and south of Lebanon right off Interstate 65. The games are held at the Little League Central Region Headquarters located at 7185 South Indianapolis Road as the field faces the Interstate. The Championship games are next Wednesday for the Great Lakes and Next Friday for the Midwest and will be televised on ESPN.
Luke Fischer and Herd That Eliminated in the Semifinals of The Basketball Tournament
Former Indiana University Basketball player Luke Fischer and Herd That which is Marshall Alumni Team lost to Heart Fire 73-68 in the Semifinals of The Basketball Tournament Wednesday Night in Philadelphia. Fischer started and played 3 minutes and 55 seconds scoring 1 point. Fischer was 0-1 from the field and 1-2 from the free throw line. Fischer pulled down 2 rebounds and committed a turnover.
Fischer was one of 10 former Hoosiers that were competing along with 2 Indiana based teams in the 64-team single elimination tournament for a chance at the $1 Millon dollar winner take all prize. In the other Semifinal Bleed Green which is the North Texas Alumni Team beat Friday Beers 68-65. Heart Fire beat Bleed Green 78-73 in the Championship Game to take home the $1 million dollar prize.
