Indiana University Women’s Soccer gets shutout win over Morehead State
The Indiana University Women’s Soccer team finished out a three game homestand with a 3-0 win over the Morehead State Eagles Thursday Night on Jerry Yeagley Field at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers are 2-0-1 on the season and have scored six goals while giving up just one in three games. Indiana Goalkeeper Jamie Gerstenberg gets her second shutout of the season and 17th of her career. Indiana Leads the All-Time Series 2-0 with the only other meeting in 2019 with a 5-0 win as the Hoosiers have outscored the Eagles 8-0 in two meetings. Morehead State drops to 1-2 after losing the season opener 3-0 to Marshall and 5-2 win over Detroit Mercy.

There were two water breaks in the game halfway through each half just like in Sunday afternoon’s match with Virginia Tech. Even with an 8pm start the Heat index at game time was 101 degrees and 70% humidity even though actual temperature was 88 Degrees and by the time the game ended the heat index had gone down 97 degrees and actual temperature was 85 degrees. The weather did not seem to bother either team as the team combined for 13 substitutions to keep players fresh and avoid injuries. “We are prepared for this type of weather” Sydney Masur Said after the game “We have practiced all summer in it, and we practice at 3pm so we are ready for it and our coaches and trainers do a great job of telling us when to hydrate and keep us fresh”.

The Hoosiers attacked early as the Hoosiers went forward six and half minutes into the match Elle Britt getting two shots 46 seconds apart with Erin Gibbs getting the save on the first shot. The Hoosiers would score at 9:33 when Anna Bennett found Sydney Masur in box, and she connected on the right foot to the bottom left of goal past Gibbs to give the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead and it gives Masur her first career goal in Indiana uniform. The Junior from Montclair New Jersey had an assist in the 2022 season against Trine. Bennett gets her second assist of the season after one she had against in the season opener against Illinois State and the seventh of her Hoosier career. “It was a great ball in from Anna, we have practice it all the time and felt great to get my first goal” Masur said. Morehead State got its first shot at 9:45 mark with Michelle Hochstadt going off target as the Eagles only had two shots in the first half with Madelyn Mozeleski getting her shot blocked at the 15:26 mark. IU had 5 shots on goal to zero for the Eagles. Morehead State Goalkeeper Erin Gibbs made four saves with Indiana Goalkeeper Jamie Gerstenberg did not make a first half save. IU committed six fouls to five for the Eagles. The Eagles had three corner kicks and were call offsides twice. The Hoosiers had two corner kicks and were called for offsides twice.

44 seconds into the second half Paige Webber wasted no time as the ball came into the box and she was able to flick the ball up and sprinted past defender and shot it with her right foot and went bottom left of goal against Erin Gibbs to put the Hoosiers up 2-0. Its Webber’s second goal of the season after she got one in the season opener against Illinois State and her eighth career goal. Gerstenberg made two second half saves as the Michelle Hochstadt had a shot that hit the cross bar and Gerstenberg was able to get a hand on it at the 63.29 mark. The Hoosiers added a third goal when Freshman Piper Coffield converted a penalty kick 68:09 mark after Sidney St. Palla was called for a foul in box that awarded the Hoosiers the penalty kick. Indiana picked up the first yellow card of the night as Hope Parades was called for unsporting at the 68.46 mark. The Hoosiers dominated the stat sheet 21-4 in shots and 11-3 in shots on goal. Erin Gibbs made 8 saves for Morehead State and Jamie Gerstenberg made three for Indiana. There were 28 fouls called in the match with for 14 for each team. Morehead State had a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks and The Eagles had four offside calls and two for Indiana.

The Hoosiers scored just 11 goals all of last season and through three games they are halfway to that total. That was a goal for the Hoosiers in the offseason to be more aggressive getting numbers forward to get those goals and Hoosiers are accomplishing that goal with a road trip Evansville Sunday evening for a 7pm matchup with the Aces. Head Coach Erwin van Bennekom knows the challenge ahead for this in state battle. “We know it will be a tough environment, they have a lot of girls on their team from Indiana, so it means a little more for them” he said after the game. Indiana leads the All-Time Series with Evansville 5-1-1, but this will be the first meeting between the two teams since 2011 when they played to a 2-2 draw.

Edgewood head coach Scott Fischer won his debut last week as the Mustangs beat Mitchell 41-27 on the red carpet in Ellettsville. It’s the most points the Mustangs have scored in a game since 49-18 road win over Indianapolis Washington on September 3, 2021. Washington is 0-1 after 34-18 loss at North Daviess and the Hatchets have lost five straight dating back to last season. Washington will look to snap the skid for the first time since a 41-15 win at Princeton on September 23, 2022.  This will be the first matchup since October 22, 2021 when the Mustangs won 16-0 in a Sectional First Round game in Washington.

Bloomington South beat Columbus East 45-10 last week and rival Martinsville comes to the Southside of Bloomington as the Panthers look to avenge a 27-14 loss to the Artesian a season ago which was the only regular season loss for Bloomington South.  Martinsville beat Bedford North Lawrence 23-19 at home last week. Martinsville head coach Brian Dugger is in his fourth season as head coach with a 21-16 record and two straight winning seasons.

Bloomington North beat Mooresville 34-29 at home and Bedford North Lawrence lost at Martinsville 23-19. The Cougars have won four straight against the Stars. The last win for Bedford North Lawrence came August 24, 2018 with 55-38 win in Bedford. The Stars have not won at Bloomington North since August 26, 2005 when the Stars beat the Cougars 27-16 as they hoping to snap a seven-game road losing skid against the Cougars at Dennis O Martin Memorial Field.

Southern Indiana Bobcats travel to Indianapolis for BCFL Playoff
The Southern Indiana Bobcats are in the Blue-Collar Football League Playoffs and will open with a Western Conference Semifinal matchup against the Indiana Tornados on Saturday at Beech Grove HS in Indianapolis at 5:30 pm. The Bobcats finished fourth in the division with a 3-7 record while the Tornados won the division with 8-2 record and home field advantage in the division. The other Western Conference Semifinal will take place in Jeffersonville Indiana between the third seed Indy Bison Red who finished 6-4 and the second seed Kentuckiana Calvary who finished 7-2. The Tornados beat the Bobcats 28-6 on May 20, in the regular season opener at Edgewood HS in Ellettsville.  It will be a much different look for both teams since the season opener as Injuries, roster additions and players not finishing the season will make for a different matchup then it three months ago.  This will be the first time that both teams have played since August 5. The Bobcats lost to the Columbus Gladiators at home while the Tornados won on the road against the Lexington Bengals 60-0.

11 Bobcats were named to the BCFL All League Team. Offensive Guard Chris Brummett, Offensive Tackle Daniel Kimbro and Running Back Marquise Holt were all named to the first team. Free Safety Cantrell Harris, Offensive Guard Gage Baker and Punter Ryan Langan were named to the second team. Indiana University Men’s Soccer player Hugo Bacharach named to MAC Hermann watch list
Senior transfer defender Hugo Bacharach was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List as announced by United Soccer Coaches on Thursday. The Hermann Trophy is presented annually by the Missouri Athletic Club and is the nation’s highest individual honor recognizing the National Player of the Year. On Wednesday, Bacharach was named to the Top-Drawer Soccer Preseason Best XI second team. TDS also ranked him the No. 22-overall player in the country.

Bacharach was a three-time first-team All-Northeast Conference performer at Fairleigh Dickinson which culminated in an NEC Defensive Player of the Year pick as a junior in 2022. This summer, he played for USL League Two’s Flint City and garnered the league’s defender of the year award after helping the club keep seven clean sheets. The Spanish center-back joins an Indiana defense that has finished top-11 nationally in shutouts the last seven seasons. IU student-athletes have also won five of the last six Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year awards.

Indiana student-athletes have won 11 player of the year awards all-time, and Andrew Gutman was the last to do so in 2018. Hoosiers have appeared in each of the last 10 Hermann Trophy Watch Lists, with IU defenders gracing each of the last nine announcements. Bacharach’s fellow seniors Brett Bebej and Joey Maher return after helping IU keep nine clean sheets last season, including four consecutive shutouts in the NCAA Tournament. IU’s midfield duo of junior Patrick McDonald and sophomore Jack Wagoner, who started 11 of Indiana’s final 12 matches in 2022, also return.

Indiana University Softball announces 2023 Fall Softball schedule

Indiana Softball 2023 Fall Ball Schedule Saturday, Sep. 16 vs. Bryant & Stratton College 2 PM   Sunday, Sep. 24 vs. Indiana State (10 Innings) 1 PM   Friday, Oct. 6 Intersquad Scrimmage 6 PM   Sunday, Oct. 8 vs. Lakeland 1 PM   Friday, Oct. 13 vs. Louisville (DH) 5:30 & 7:30 PM

Seven Indiana University Football players named to the Senior Bowl watch list
Seven Indiana football players have been named to the 11th annual Reese’s Senior Bowl watch list.  Making the list from the Hoosiers is linebacker Jacob Mangum-Farrar, Defensive Lineman LeDarrius Cox, Linebacker Aaron Casey, Defensive Lineman Andre Carter, Center Zach Carpenter, Offensive Tackle Matthew Bedford, and Defensive Lineman Philip Blidi. The Senior Bowl is a college football all-star game held following the conclusion of the season and prior to the NFL Draft. Multiple high-profile NFL Draft prospects are invited, though it must be players who are not foregoing eligibility to enter the draft, and instead entering after playing for at least four years at the college level.

Funnily enough, this is the second year in a row where Indiana has had seven players named to the preseason Senior Bowl watch list. In 2022, the Hoosiers’ Shaun Shivers, Luke Haggard, Cam Jones, Jaylin Williams, Tiawan Mullen, Devon “Monster” Matthews, and Matthew Bedford were put on notice by the Senior Bowl in the preseason. This is the second year in a row Bedford has been on the list, as the Offensive Lineman missed nearly the entire 2022 season after suffering an injury in the season opener against Illinois. What stands out with the group of seven on the watch list in 2023 is that four of them are first-year Indiana players for Coach Tom Allen and the Hoosiers. The quartet of Mangum-Farrar, Cox, Carter, and Blidi transferred into IU from Stanford, Ole Miss, Western Michigan, and Texas Tech, respectively.

Casey is perhaps the least surprising name on the list, as he’s nominally the leader of the entire team entering 2023. The sixth-year linebacker from Douglasville, Ga., led Indiana’s defense with 86 tackles last season, and is one of just a handful of returning starters on the team. Additionally, Casey wears the No. 44 jersey for IU in honor of George Taliaferro. At Big Ten Media Days, Coach Allen said that the team came up with the tradition of, “selecting a player each year that will wear that number (No. 44) that best represents the work ethic, dedication, integrity and perseverance that George Taliaferro displayed.”

Carpenter, meanwhile, is one of the steadiest players on the Indiana roster. He started 10 games in 2022 after missing two early contests with injury and should play a key role on an offensive line that expects improvement under new position coach Bob Bostad.  Being named to the preseason watch list does not guarantee one’s spot in the Senior Bowl. The game in Mobile, AL., is still several months away, and the Senior Bowl website itself says, “Senior tape is the most critical criteria in our selection process and every senior will be re-evaluated based on their tape this fall.” But still, this is a great honor for these seven Hoosiers, who Indiana Football fans should be expecting big things from this Fall.
